Generally, I like this show, but two things stick out that really bug me:
1) David and Hillary are always arguing or slamming one another, whether it be for show or if they're really like that it's obnoxious.
2) Hillary ALWAYS over sells herself and what she can do for the family's house. I've yet to see an episode where she delivers on the family's BIG request on the reno.

Ha! I totally agree with you. I don't think I have ever seen a show where she did not run into some major problem. And then the people get so mad at her, but really, she finds some major problems that absolutely need to be fixed. I remember one that was on recently and basically they had no support in the basement to keep any of the first floor up! The owners (and maybe even previous owners) had done a bunch of their own renovations and completely jacked up the basement.
Sometimes what I see on the show drives me nuts, but I continue to watch!
Does anyone know where it is filmed? The homeowners always seem to have very high budgets for houses they are looking at. I don't think I have ever seen a show where they were looking at less than $500,000 houses.

It does seem like one of the faker reality shows out there but I really do enjoy watching it if it comes up when I am flipping channels. The other one I like is Property Brothers.
The last episode of Love it or List it I watched, the couple had like a bazillion kids and only 10k to spend on renovations. She couldn't even get a dishwasher for the kitchen on that budget and the "laundry room" she created was behind a pole so I knew they would never be able to open that dryer all the way. I have no idea why the wife was so attached to that tiny shit hole of a house. Also the husband seemed way lazy and didn't even to paint anything. Whatever. |

I'm pretty sure it's filmed in Toronto, and that the real estate prices there are comparable to DC real estate prices. So I don't find it absolutely obscene. I live in the land of half-million dollar townhouses. (NB: I do not live in a half-million dollar townhouse. )

I think the arguing is only for entertainment value although I don't find it entertaing at all. I think the premise of the show is interesting and I don't understand why they have to script in fake arguments etc. Lately, I have noticed the wives really going after Hillary and also really speaking down to their husbands too.
I believe the houses are in Toronto and many of them sure have a lot of heavy, stained dark wood trim. |

I love that show, but the owners are always the ones that drive me nuts.
I always think, "It's your house, and it's not Hillary's fault it has problems, so quit being jerks and just deal."
I think the show is shot in Toronto, if I'm not mistaken. |

I have yet to see an episode where the home owners don't totally HATE what Hillary is doing to their house. They always come home and she has some disappointing news. Something has to be totally redone that they had no plan of redoing - like wiring, or support beams, etc. Then they go outside and totally rip her and her lack of being able to deliver on their non-negotiable renovations. For some reason I keep watching, too. |

I liked it for about 10 episodes then had to stop watching, for all the reasons stated above. Fake.
Which is too bad because if they just played it straight, it would be a good show. |

I remember ONE episode (and I have seen a BUNCH) where Hilary was able to give them everything promised except for one item and it wasn't a huge item that was left out. Most of the time, after every episode ends, I think about how I would love to see ONE episode where Hilary can deliver on everything. She got close ONCE. LOL |

all the big renovations on our house...we have always found "extra problems"...you just have to expect it. (we found out our back of the house was not on a foundation...had to have one hand dug and poured...finished it just before a big earthquake).
so I get that part of it...but the expense of moving is not taken into account..here...our taxes only stay low if we stay put.
currently planning to do a minor remodeling of the bathroom..getting rid of illegal electrical that exists there...among other things.

we used to watch this show but it drove my dh crazy - especially at the end when they said what the increased value was .... but they didn't take out the amount of money they paid (ex. maybe their value was $500K and they (homeowner or show?) spent $50K in renovations and afterward it was valued at $600K and they say they increased their value $100K...but it took $50K to get the $100K so really they only increased it $50K)
we recognized it as a Canadian show but i wasn't sure where it was filmed.
it did drive me crazy that Hillary wouldn't give the homeowners a choice on what to cut - and often she'd say something like she needed to keep money for decorating...i'm sure the homeowners would have rather had something else rather than more knick knacks (even if they are new)...and what do they do with the homeowners 'old' stuff?
for those that decided to 'list it' i wish they'd show a follow up on the end...did they REALLY get that much for their house and were they able to move into the new house...i always thought if they made an offer on the contingency that their own house sold it could take a while. |

I came across this show over break and thought I would like it. At the 3rd episode I was DONE. I HATE all of the arguments & disagreeing. I don't even care if it's real or fake. It makes me uncomfortable and almost angry at times. The homeowner wife always comes across as a bitch Nd I can't stand it! |

That is the truth! For the money they are spending, she really comes up short time after time.
One question I am not clear about-is the show paying for the furnishings or is that part of the renovation cost? To me, redecorating is not part of a reno budget. |

our neighbours two doors up filmed it last summer - i can attest it is filmed in toronto! it is very scripted... they meet before to see who is the "love it" and which person will be the "list it". the do a lot of interview filming the same day so would send them back inside to change their clothes.
the houses they show them as to possibly purchase weren't even in our neighbourhood and one wasn't even actually for sale!
the show is strict about the "reveal" though - they want your reaction to be as genuine as possible. our neighbours got an AWESOME new kitchen.
i was teasing the husband after i saw their episode that he was awfully negative, complaining all the time about everything!

I like the show but have the same pet peeves as everyone else--I especially hate the hissy fits the homeowners have at Hilary not being able to take care of a collapsing roof/leaky basement/mouse infestation and still give them everything else they need on a miniscule budget There is a new version of the show that just started, and it is filmed in Vancouver. I could only watch the first 10 minutes of that one, because the designer and realtor are so annoyingly awful!!! Perhaps we should start a write in campaign and ask the producers to tone down the overacting a little, lol!

I remember that one. That house was a hot mess and even if the Hillary had been able to deliver their wish list, it wasn't suitable for their family. They were expecting another one too!
My dd loves this show, so sometimes I get sucked in. There have been a couple of shows where you see the wife's baby bump growing on the screen and David & Hillary act completely shocked when the couple finally makes the big announcement. I'm like, don't tell me you didn't notice the wife has a bun in the oven, dimwits and don't think we're buying what you're trying to sell either! |

I remember one house where the couple wanted to reno the basement and Hillary could not give them a kitchen like they wanted due to code and expense. A few weeks later I saw that same house on Property Brothers with a different set of owners and the guys were able to do an amazing job on the same basement and did a great kitchen!

I think a lot of the problem with this show is that the homeowners are not realistic in their expectations. People really need to do some research when coming up with the budgets for renovations compared to their needs.
I hate when people start going off on Hilary when she has to redo wiring, or add support beams, etc....Drives me nuts because it's not her fault... |

I mean, really - your house is 100 years old, you've done nothing to it and you are surprised there are electrical/foundation/support beam/rotted wood problems that eat into your renovation budget?

The original home Reno shows like This Old House that relied on facts and the process rather than manufactured drama seem quaint by comparison. |

I watch it, it's better than some but worse than others...I didn't like Hillary at first but she kind of grew on me, but the sniping between the two of them gets really old. I do hate that they give her such a hard time when she finds out that their house could have burned down because of shoddy electrical wiring, and she needs to scrap her ideas and rewire the whole house. I have seen a couple with fairly small budgets and a crapload of reno, and I just laugh. You know Hillary will be coming back to them asking for more money in the end! |

I really dislike this show too. I was chatting with my mom about it and what bugs me the most is that this show (and others) make the designer look totally incompetent.
I can't imagine walking into a clients house and telling them that they won't be getting their master suit because there was bad wiring in the basement. And yet they spend tons of money on accessories and furnishings.
I am so glad to see you all don't like the show. Hopefully it doesn't put a bad taste in your mouth for all designers.

The other thing that bugs me a LOT is that the homeowners are the customer. Whenever they complain about something Hilary gets all huffy and martyrish "They just don't appreciate ALLLL that I'm doing for them".
Hell the homeowners have a right to be pissed.
Also they make all the homeowners play good cop/bad cop as they are looking for houses. the formatting of this show is just sooooo lame.

We watch it in our home. Yes, it is often over the top. At this point we are always surprised when someone actually agrees to love it.
Imo the reason she decorates is because she can get more bang for her buck. She can only do simple remodels on what $$ they give her. By adding the decor the owners are given a "wow" factor. At times it is the only trick she has available. I have to say she does do a nice job with it.
I wonder is David and Hillary are having fun with this or if there is a tell all book out there in the future.

The acting on this show is so bad, I can't suspend my disbelief and enjoy the fake reality tv showiness of it all. Hilary and David are terrible actors, really no better than the amateur homeowners and their incessant fake bickering and competitiveness turns me right off. When I do have occasion to watch it, I usually turn the sound off so I can see the reno and the houses supposedly for sale.

I watched several episodes yesterday and like to see the end result. I finished the night wanting to make some changes in my own house. . I also have to wonder how people can afford houses in the price ranges they were talking about. I am not sure where they are located, but how do people afford houses $600,000 and up? Is he salary for comparable jobs where they live that much higher than anywhere else? |
