FIL has a convention in Reno in July. He wants my family (DH, me, DS 11, and DS 8) and of course MIL to go too. His convention is at the Grand Sierra Resort, but we could book somewhere else if that place isn't good.

Has anybody been there recently? What can you tell me about the area/hotel?

It's been 9 years since our last trip...but I can say that I love Reno! So much so that we named our new horse Reno.

I will tell you that wherever you stay, maker sure you visit Virginia city, and you take a whole day or two to drive completely around Lake Tahoe. Every corner, every twist in the road, is breathtaking. Then drive up to Donner pass.

But do not miss Virginia city. Soooooo much fun!

Oh I would also like to know what people's responses to this are. We are planning on going late September/ early October. Our plan was to fly into Reno, drive to Lake Tahoe and stay there for 2 days and then come back to Reno and stay there for about 3 days.

I have a soft spot for Reno since I was born there. I agree with lynlam not to miss Virginia City. I always like going up there. Lake Tahoe is ok but I liked the town of Truckee and Donner Lake better.

This is just my opinion of course, but I'd spend more time in/around the Tahoe area, and less in Reno. Reno just did not knock my socks off. We also liked Virginia city.

I don't know where my other response went??? Anyway, GSR is a great place to stay. They have a $3 movie theater, bowling alley, "beach", a mini type amusement park, etc. Lots of stuff to do. You can follow them on facebook for specials. Their website has lots of good info too.

GSR is super nice. We have gone a few time just for a fun day out. Plus it is right across the street from walmart if you need anything. It is one of the nicer ones in the area.

We have a couple good museum and wild life part.

I have quite a few learing disabilitys that effect my spelling a grammer. I do know my grammer and spelling suck. I have been working on this problem all my adult life.

I recently moved to a small town outside of Carson City. I will be watching this thread for things to do with my 13 year old as soon as it warms up!

another cool zoo is Animal Ark. Its a rescue type zoo. We go to both Animal Ark and Sierra Safari. Sierra is cool because it has a petting zoo where you can go in with the deer goats etc and feed them. We liked Animal Ark because it has huge enclosures for the animals, its really spread out and a great place.

I was born and raised there and still visit a few times a year. I like the Grand Sierra but I'm also a huge fan of Atlantis. If you get a chance hit the buffet there you won't want to leave lol. It's that good! I second Virginia City.

If you also have the chance, Nevada's hidden treasure is Pyramid Lake about 35 min outside of Reno. Make sure you watch for the wild mustang sanctuary on the way out there. There is nothing as breathtaking as coming over that hill and there's the most beautiful lake you will ever see. Simply stunning.
