ETA: My posts contains spoilers, but if you've read this far, you probably already know about the spoilers anyway!

I think I'm the only person on the planet defending Lord Grantham's decision to take the advice of the London doctor over Dr. Clarkson, but when you think about it, Dr. Clarkson doesn't have the best record. The misdiagnosis of Matthew would have shaken my faith in Dr. Clarkson if I were Lord Grantham.

Regardless, I feel sorry for Lord Grantham. He obviously made the wrong decision about which doctor to trust, but he is heartbroken Sybil died and now feels responsible. I feel sorry for him and think that Cora is being too harsh. I thought it was very sweet when Granny made the comment about how he shouldn't blame himself, women sometimes just die in childbirth.

I thought it was interesting how Sybil's last words set the plot in motion for next week. She told Mary she wants her baby to be baptized Catholic and she told her mother she wanted Tom to keep moving forward with his career.

I wonder who will raise the baby. I have a feeling Matthew and Mary are going to want to raise the baby. I think Cora might encourage Tom to go live in a big city like London and pursue his journalism career (Sybil's last wishes). I'm guessing that the family will argue that he is not capable of raising a child on his own and that he should give up the child to Matthew and Mary. Maybe Tom & Edith will fall in love since they are both journalists.

If you are all shocked by that episode, you have an even bigger shock coming ... Just sayin', lol!

I for one would rather not know there's a big shock coming. Now I'm going to be watching the episode knowing something is going to happen. Thanks. :/

ETA: SPOILER! (just in case...)

I was completely thrown. During the entire scene I kept expecting someone to do something, or something to happen and her to take a big gulp of air. I sat with my mouth wide open and still thought somehow she had lived... right up until they showed the staff gathered downstairs.
I adored the character and can't believe she's gone.

It's odd to me how everyone was so stoic. Maybe it was the era, or the English way? I can't believe no one was hysterical.

Please, please, PLEASE don't tell us there are more shocking things to come! I have done very well avoiding all spoilers and I don't want episodes to be ruined with, "You thought that was shocking, what till you see..."

Nope Target has the 3rd season DVD for $25, $29 for BlueRay starting Tuesday. It's in their weekly ad. Best Buy has it for $29 with $5 off if you bring in a used movie. My DH is insisting we buy it but the weekly wait is good. Builds up scenarios in my mind.

I was just coming back to apologize and say that amazon.com has it for $25-$30. Sorry about that. Still not available till tomorrow, though.

I've corrected my post upthread.

So sad.

And I'm really over the Bates storyline. Get him the hell out of prison already. BORING.

I know I'm being a complete dork but I had to come back and say, I just got three emails from amazon.com about how their low-price guarantee had saved me $8 per DVD and blu-ray set I ordered. So when I pre-ordered back in December, the prices WERE in the $30+ range. Which is why I thought that. Wasn't completely pulling those prices out of my ... oh, never mind.

On the down side, due to a payment screw-up, I didn't get my pre-ordered sets yesterday on official release day. They'll arrive tomorrow instead. So the big DA party day here will be on Saturday.

Lucy, I fell for the amazon guarantee low price too and ordered it from Amazon. Later that day I saw it was going to be cheaper at Target and no shipping involved so I cancelled my order and stopped by Target on the way home from work. Didn't see any difference in Blue Ray or regular DVD content so just got the regular DVD. We have high definition TV anyway.

I get the blu-ray for me because my son insists it's better and I MUST.

My sister and SIL can't tell the difference so they get regular DVD.

I went with Amazon too- no shipping, 24.99 and I got it the day it was released.

I'm also wondering why Mary has to be so bitchy with Edith. It seems that Edith wants to be close/move on but Mary shuts her down...repeatedly. Why?
OMG- remember when Edith wrote to someone (Pamuk's father?) telling them exactly how Pamuk died? She ruined Mary's reputation out of spite and jealousy. She humiliated her and forced her to admit what happened, to everyone she knew.

If I was Mary, I'd still be beating her.

Wasn't it the Turkish embassy? I can't stand Edith, even after she tried to redeem herself during the war. I'll miss Sybil, my favorite Crawley sister.

I picked up the DVD's last night at Target but I'm not going to be able to watch them until tomorrow because DH isn't home tonight and he'll be crushed if I watch without him. Just so we're clear, it's killing me.

Count me in as another who was shocked with how things turned out, although at several points during the show, I was getting the idea that it might go that way.

I kind of feel for Lord Grantham too--he really thought he was doing what was best. No one could have known which doctor was right and no one could have known that if even they had followed the other doctor's advice Sybil would have lived. Looks like things are just going to continue going downhill for him next week as he loses his wife's love and his power at Downton. I really feel for him.

This is completely off-topic, but I was thinking about it as I rewatch all of Downton Abbey with my 22-year-old ds. He's back from California for awhile and he is now completely hooked on DA. We're about halfway through season 2. The question is, does anyone like Isobel? It seems that she is universally disliked by the characters and by the fans. I actually like her. Yes, she is bossy and can come across in a holier than thou way, but I really feel like her heart is in the right place. Am I the only one who likes her?

I like Isobel. I actually thought that the tension between her and the Dowager Countess earlier in the series was much better written (and acted) than that between the DC and Cora's mother.

Edith is my least favorite character.
