I have all my sons school papers from kindergarten and he is now in 5th grade...they are not organized they are shoved here and there. Help! Do you keep your kid school papers, do you throw them out, do you have a system for storing them and if so, what is it? Last year I starting putting just special papers in a separate 12x12 clear envelope(keeping them for future scrap layouts or just to eventually put in his school scrapbook binder), but I still have all the others. I don't have room to store everything and it is overtaking my son's room and other portions of the house...any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I take pictures of them at the end of year. Recycle most of them and save the best bits. |

I put the best ones in a box and save them. Each box is labeled by grade. I've seen some great ideas on Pinterest where people put the papers in 3 ring binders organized by grade.

I put the preschool papers in sleeves in a binder. I just can't do that every years. Kindergarten papers are put in a tub until I can decide what to do.

I throw a lot of it away. Math homework papers get thrown out - do not do this in front of your child or you will get a teary "you're just throwing those away? " Chinese worksheets get thrown out. I save stories they write, for the story and to show the handwriting. I keep flyers for field trips. I take pictures of big art projects, wait a few months then throw out.
I try to go through everything at the end of the year. It is easier to throw pieces out when you have a whole pile of them. When you look at them individually as they come home, each piece feels more special and is harder to let go. So I save them up through the year in a magazine holder. This is what has worked best for me. It is the right size, it has an open top, no holes to punch. Works for me. At the end of the year , I weed through and transfer what's left to a big envelope or a zip folder.
I also do a school scrapbook for each kid.
When your kid is 30, are they really going to sit down and look through all their preschool math papers? |

I have a regular big rubbermaid container for each of our three kids, with their school work/projects from K-12. It is all organized & each grade is in a Generations memorabilia pocket & labeled. Everything is in those pockets like movie tickets, awards & school pics each year. |

I saved them all from K-3. This summer I went through them and kept the best. Some of them were his handwriting practice from each year, some were projects, some were good grades, some were really cute stories he wrote. Those are in a box and I hope to do something with them. This year I am doing project life. I bought envelope pages to put in once a month to contain some of his work.

I use the plastic accordian style folders for their school papers and small art projects. I take photos of their larger art projects and then throw the art projects away. Sometimes the accordian folders last me for two school years. Then the accordian folders go into a rubbermaid container. |

I save only art that they are really proud of, and papers like stories etc. and only a handful each year.
I enjoy reading my leprechaun story from 3rd grade or my "all about me" report from 9th grade, but I was really irritated by worksheets and stuff my mom saved for "me".
When my MIL passed away we threw away an entire trash bag (black leaf bag) of my dh's school stuff. He kept about 6-8 things out of it all and it was just a chore that wasn't enjoyable for 98% of the time we were sorting through it.
Do your kids a favor and recycle the majority of it.  |

I keep a couple. The rest get thrown into the recycling bin.
I use the mother-in-law rule on saving things. If my mil were to show up tomorrow with an item from my husband's childhood (photos, a story he had written), is it something I would be thrilled to get, or something I pitch in the trash as soon as she left (teeth, little league participation trophy) | |

I take pictures or scan things that he does and throw the actual paper away.
At the end of the year, I decide what I think shows *him* and 1) make a scrapbook page (digital) 2) I print wallet size photos of report cards, art work & anything else special that happened & put in the appropriate year of his K-12th book pocket. | |

We have two spots, one for art work and another for papers that need to be "kept". Artwork goes in an under the bed storage tote; when it gets full we spend an afternoon going through it by taking pictures and recycling the ones that DD is ready to part with. The other is an accordion file for the usual class work papers. | |

A wise friend once told me to save anything that has their "handprint" on it, and chuck the rest. So, every school year I buy those plastic pocketed and pronged folders for each boy. I save anything that has a handprint, footprint, or is just generally awesome. Worksheets, basic coloring sheets, random crafts that aren't personalized or won't stand the test of time (a coffee filter butterfly is so sweet...and barely lives through the car ride home), get saved in plain sight for a day or two, then tossed when they aren't looking.
I label the folder for the school year, their name, and their grade and then it all goes in their memory box when the year is over. | |

Meaningful papers "About Me," "About My home/family" and hopes, dreams, etc. are saved in 3-ring binder sleeves Or school scrapbooks.
General schoolwork and such is recycled once the need has passed. |

Every year I set up a box with a lid, where EVERYTHING from school goes into it for each kid. They are both, always pawing through it for something. At the end of the year, I get a pizza box for each kid and save my favorite things from the year. And then start over for the next year. | |
