**Update #2**
She got to go in a little earlier than we thought.
The shoes are approved by the teacher, so next is a class to teach them how to break them in, remove the nail, sew the ribbons and things, etc etc etc.
Happy camper! Maybe now she'll sleep tonight. lol
**update** Pointe Shoes!! She came zipping out of class today like this: . Very cute. lol She'll have a fitting on Friday, so I'll be back with pictures.
***O.P.****
Her ballet teacher is supposed to be making the "big announcement" about pointe shoes today. Baylie is dressed for class 3 hours early, and I just sent her to read a book because she was literally pacing in the dining room. hahaha
I think that if the announcement doesnt happen today, she might make that high pitched squeal like a hot dog in a microwave, and then just explode. Poor kid.

Sharla, she probably means that the teacher is announcing who will be able to begin pointe. Reputable ballet schools won't allow girls to begin pointe until they're strong enough and have taken enough classes, and usually not before a certain age (12 at my dd's school).
OP, I hope she's accepted.

Yep. We know she's on the "going up" list for sure. The question is, when will the announcement be made. Her two bff's are also on the list. She's VERY VERY excited.

Oh I remember those days well. My DD's both went up at 12 and yes, they had to be taking a certain number of classes a week, be strong enough, close enough to puberty to ensure enough bone strength, etc, etc, etc. Its a HUGE deal in the world of a little ballerina.
Hope the announcement goes well for her!
Take lots of pics at her fitting!

I tried to tell her that she's already waited 10 years, another week or three wasn't a big deal. She was not amused. ( ) lol

Lol, well at 58.00 a pair, I can tell you this ex pointe mom doesn't miss that expense. I just went thru an old bucket of saved shoes. There were over 80 pairs in there! These we're all performance or special occasion shoes that were dated for the performance so we cant throw them out. Only the day to day shoes went in the trash. No telling how many there were of those.
Good luck to your dd, I know how exciting it is for them to take that next step. Our ballet director use to give out point shoe key chains to signify who was going on pointe next. The girls put them on their dance bags since they weren't old enough to drive!

it is an exciting day - our dance teacher would take the girls on a "field trip" to the dance shoe store to get fitted for shoes - great fun and then the teacher made sure that the shoes met her standards!
good luck and hopefully she won't explode first!

Angie, congratulations to your dd!
Meg, we were buying Freeds (by the fish maker stamp) 5 pairs at a time. She was dancing in London and they did a custom fitting. The only thing is they are really only a performance shoe good for maybe 1-2 days. Then she went to Blochs and finally to Ariels by Capezio. We also did a stint in Griskos and Chachott. Those stupid Griskos had to be beaten on the curb. I just had to shake my head over that nonsense.
Can you buy them at Discount Dancewear? They use to give pretty good discounts if you bought in quantity.

I also wish ours only cost $58. oy
I remember that first fitting. Our dance teacher also took them all as a group up to her preferred dance store (which has since closed because the long-time owner retired...sob ). Such excitement. lol.
The other cute thing was the day they sewed their ribbons and elastics. They did that in class that first time so the teacher could supervise. Well right after their pointe class was a Ballet II class, girls maybe 7 or 8 or so. Well they came in to the studio a bit early as they always do. There's a little waiting area at the end of this particular studio where the girls change their shoes, etc. There's a waist-high wall as a divider. The girls all lined up along that wall with HUGE eyes, watching the pointe girls sew.
Too cute. | |

Wahoo! I'm a lurker but had to post and share in your excitement. How old is your daughter? My daughter is 13 and just went on last summer. She knew she was going on but not when the fitting was, and her teacher and I surprised her with it on her birthday (she thought we were going to the city for her brother's baseball game). Congratulations to your daughter!!

So exciting!
My 13 yo hasn't taken pointe. Right now, they aren't offering it at our studio (they have on and off over the years depending on who was ready and interested). Several of our kids go to a performing arts high school where pointe is offered (and expected I believe). DD will not be going there next year by her own choice. I am not sure she will ever take pointe but I love to watch it!

Congrats to your dd.
My youngest just got the go ahead a few weeks ago. It was an exciting day when we went down to the dance store to get fitted for shoes. The only downside is the hour long drive to go to the store with a larger selection of brands, models, and sizes for beginners to pick from.

How exciting! What shoes did she wind up with?
She ended up with Grishkos. She's got fairly tight feet, so they wanted her in something really soft to start out. Plus, her feet are INSANELY wide. lol
Um, when you say go to class to learn how to remove the nail, what are you talking about?
There's all kinds of things they do to the shoes to sort of break them in and make them more comfortable/better on their feet. There's a tiny little nail in the shoe that goes through the center of the insole, into the sole. Most people remove it so the shoe can flex more.
