I had a bad avocado experience when I was about 10. It took me about 35 years to give guacamole a try, and OMG, holy moley guacamole-LOVE this stuff! When I think about all the times I went to my favorite Mexican restaurant, and would beg them not to even put it on my plate! D@mn I was missing out!

And as a bonus, nobody else in my house will touch the stuff so when I make it, it's ALL mine!

So what did you hate as a kid and finally grow to love as an adult?

Guacamole and avocados in general are a big one for me. It is one of my favorite foods now, but I wouldn't even try it as a kid.

Chinese food in general is another - my only experience had been sweet & sour, and I still don't really like it. I thought all Chinese was that type of flavor.

Onions. As a kid, I couldn't even gag down anything they were in. Now I absolutely crave them. The smell makes my mouth water.

Guacamole is another recently aquired taste.

Guacamole is mine, too. I seriously hated it. Once, then-fiance and I went to a Tex-Mex place, and I ordered whatever without guacamole and it came with it. I had to ask them to take it back and get me a new one because I just couldn't eat it. I couldn't even eat around it.

FF 7 or 8 years, and we were married with one child and had been TTC our second for a while. DH and I had been working around the house one Saturday and decided just to order out from a local Tex-Mex place for supper. I called in the order and he left to pick it up. A minute after he left, I had this huge craving for guacamole, so I called and added it. When he came home, he asked, "Did you order this guacamole?" and I told him I added it. He said, "You have to be pregnant. You hate guacamole!"

A few weeks later, I tested and I was! I love guacamole now. I have it at least once a week!

Horseradish. I had it a hoity-toity meal when i was about 16 and hated it. One of the guests told me \i would learn to appreciate it. Now I can eat it til I breathe fire and often add a bit to other recipes for a little kick.

Lots of things we just never had at home growing up beacuse my parents never had them when they were growing up. I never had a sweet potatoe until I was 28 and I absolutely LOVE them now.

I think I ate mac and cheese, spaghetti, pb and j, rice and chicken and dumplings when I was a kid. My veggie of choice was string beans. Now I'll eat different types of sushi, asparagus, ox tails, goat, cauliflower, broccoli, calamari. The only foods I don't care for so far (that I've tried) are eel, beets and brussel sprouts.

Asparagus, artichokes, avocados, caviar, zucchini, yellow squash, egg plant, spaghetti squash, beans (black, red, ranch style, etc), sushi, lamb, different fish.

My mom had a way of killing veggies that turned me off of them. I was able to discover them as an adult and love them.

avocados and guac would probably be the number one for me.

others include:
mushrooms, brussel sprouts, onions, squash/zucchini, and more of an appetite for spices and flavorings.

Two things I doubt I will ever like:
beets (I used to be obsessed with cranberries. I took a huge helping of beets thinking they were cranberries. After one huge bite that 7 year old was scarred for life).

Well I don't eat avocado at all, but I was an extremely picky eater as a child. So there are a huge amount of things I now really love that I would never eat before I was a fully grown adult!

A few of these are: cheese on hamburgers
spaghetti sauce
peppers and onions
beans, especially black beans
(except lima-I always loved lima beans!)
sour cream
green beans

I still DO NOT eat :
catsup or mustard
pickles of any kind
any alcohol based food (no, it doesn't 'cook out'
oatmeal, except the cookies!
most veggies

(I used to be obsessed with cranberries. I took a huge helping of beets thinking they were cranberries. After one huge bite that 7 year old was scarred for life).

That's kinda like my experience with avocados. My dad made me try one (you know, try everything once), and I took a big bite thinking it would crunch like an apple. As soon as that stuff gooshed through my teeth, it was all over.

As far as vegetables go, I was pretty good eating a lot of them as a kid. Now that I'm older, I really prefer most of them roasted. For those that still don't like brussel sprouts, roast them. They are so friggin' good. The outside will caramalize and get a little crunch to them--they are so, so good roasted.

Anything spicy ... my mum and dad were very traditional with their food so I never got chance to try new things until I was older and buying food out for myself.

I just love spicy food now! Grown our own chillies too.

Other things I bought specifically to tempt the kiddos when they were toddlers - Marmite and Peanut Butter. None of the kids liked either but I love both now despite hating them with a passion when I was young.

I'd rather be in Disney World!

Guacamole. Never had it as a kid (it wasn't that I refused....it wasn't something my mom ever had or offered). I tried it as an adult and didn't like it. Around age 35 I tried someone else's and loved it. Now I eat it whenever I can

Chili. Never liked my mom's (she made it more soupy, like goulash). I like some chili now.

My mom is very picky, so I never even tried many things: I was 17 before I tried any Chinese food & loved it! Never had guacamole until then either- another love- but have only made my own in the last 2 years. I'm 39... Hummus- in the last year, no joke. It's like a food awakening! Unfortunately dh is total farm boy: beef, potatoes, gravy, & pie. Italian & Mexican are ok, but that's it.

Like you, guacomole/avoacado. Hated them both as a child, love them now as an adult. Also, didn't like reece's peanut butter cups, but now could eat them everyday

Didn't like olives, beans, bananas and mushrooms as a kid and yep, still don't like them now!

About 85% of what I eat.

Seriously, I have had food issues my entire life. Ridiculously heightened sense of smell + texture issues + an overactive imagination. I've worked, hard, on trying new foods and expanding my food choices.

New favorites would include asparagus. I love that vegetable! But, it has to be above a certain temperature or it makes me gag. Go figure!

Crab, red & yellow peppers, onion, tomatoes, garlic, healthy lettuces, spinach, carrots, meatloaf, fresh cherries, yogurt. Cake! Seriously! But, it has to be homemade. If it's store bought...

There are so many! Having been able to expand my food choices is one of my proudest accomplishments. I've been working on it for over 20 years and I've come so far. It will be something that I will continue to work through the rest of my life.

That's funny, Natalie. My first thought was guacamole too.

I didn't have a chance to ever try guacamole until my sophmore year of college. I went home with some college friends who were transplants from California (to Mississippi) and their mom made the most fabulous quacamole. I tried it because I didn't want to be rude, having no clue what it was.

And fell completely in love. I've been eating the stuff ever since--about 20 years. Lots and lots of it. It's one of my favorite foods.

I eat pretty much everything now (with the exception of offal and oysters). When I was a child we ate quite basic food, so I wasn't exposed to a lot of different foods.

2 that I can think of - I didn't like avocado or olives until I was in my 30s! Love them both now.

Definitely guacamole, just like the OP!

I hated a number of things as a child, such as pot roast & potatoes and any kind of cooked pork. Foods I enjoy cooking and eating as an adult.

As a child I wouldn't touch any form of egg. Now, I can eat scrambled eggs, especially if they have veggies mixed in. I still will not eat a fried or poached egg. I will eat a hard-boiled egg if it is in potato salad, but that's it.

I was such a picky eater as a kid. My diet pretty much consisted of cereal, PB&J, macncheese, and chicken nuggets.

I'm still fairly picky (in my 30s) but getting better. Now I love steak (DH says I never had a good steak), peppers, spinach dip, sour cream, fresh salsa, and lettuce & cheese on subs.

I think after all the other comments, I may just have to give guacamole a try!

Peppers, black olives, canteloup, spinach (still iffy, depends on the dish)

One thing I ate as a child that I cannot STAND now are brussel sprouts. My mom always made frozen ones and I ate them without much complaint, though they weren't my favorite vegetable. I recently bought some fresh ones and tried roasting them (I love most roasted veggies) and thought they were disgusting - and they STINK. DH came in from work and asked if I was cooking ass for dinner - we had to open the doors and turn on the fans for an hour just to get the funk out of the house.
