I'm having dinner at Steak N Shake. The lady that came in before me had a puppy in her arms. He was small and quiet but it still bothered me. So I'm curious, would you have complained to the manager?
Now that I've seen some responses, I'll tell you that yes I did complain to the manager. A waiter then went over to the table and the lady took the dog out. I like dogs but I don't want one in the restaurant  |

Yes, if it is not a clearly trained and marked service dog it does not belong there. There are clear rules and reasons for it. |

I would have complained to the manager and if he didn't do anything I would let him know I would be filing a complaint with the health dept and o would leave immediately without paying.

At a real restaurant, I would have removed myself. I'm not a dog person. I don't like them and wouldn't enjoy a meal in their presence.
At the Steak & Shake, however, meh. I've seen worse.
Aren't there health codes about this kind of thing? |

Honestly, it would bother me that she brought a non service dog into the restaurant but even though I wouldn't have liked it, I probably wouldn't have said anything and just throw a few disapproving glances in her direction  |

How do you know he wasn't a service dog? There are all sorts of disabilities that dogs are trained to help. Maybe the dog would have alerted its owner to a epileptic seizure, low blood sugar, or even as a friend of mine has a dog who helps her with her balance -- and he is quite small.
You sound very judgmental -- maybe that helps you get through the day but are you happy?

As far as would this bother me....I'd say yes...but not for health reasons....Small dog people piss me off.....they think their "small dog" can just be carried and go any where....my BIG dogs I cant cary them..I would not snitch on anyone.... | |

While I am getting really tired of the whole small dog "thing" (carry it everywhere you go at all times and omg look at this cute outfit for it!  ) The situation described in the OP wouldn't bother me. When I'm at home my cats are only about 3 feet away when I'm eating, so a dog at another table is the same thing. As long as it wasn't barking or doing something gross. | |

I love my dogs to death. I would never dream of taking them into a restaurant and I would be bothered by someone holding a puppy at the table of a restaurant where I was eating. | |

Funny story....went into Harbor Freight with my hubby and my Seeing Eye Dog last weekend. There was some lady in there thinking she was getting over on the store and everyone because she had a dog shoved in her winter coat. As we walked by, her dog started freaking out, barking and going all crazy...she was so busted. Both dog and illegal dog owner left with their tails between their legs. My guide dog didn't break stride or give her dog a second's notice.
It just cracked me up because her dog couldn't behave in the store...that is why her dog didn't belong in the store!

Wouldn't bother me if it was behaving.
But then I have a large dog who is usually hanging out in the kitchen. Being in the vicinity of a dog and two cats while I'm eating is normal in my house. My kids are way grosser than the dog, LOL.

Do service dogs need to wear any sort of ID?
I ask because someone had a small dog on our cruise a few weeks ago with nothing to mark it a service dog and the owner was downright rude when someone asked about it. I thought service dogs needed to wear vests to be "in service" but now think I'm wrong about that... |

As the new owner of a small puppy Im not real sure where dogs are allowed to be carried. I would have asked a waitress if dogs were allowed in the restaurant.
I havent taken my dog into any type of store but I certainly wouldnt take her into a restaurant. I recently had her in the car with me and was tempted to get a coffee but I chickened out and had one at home. I dont want to make a scene or give eople a bad imressin of dog owners. | |

Yes it would bother me but I would stay out of it.
With that said I have a puppy in training from a guide dog school with me at all times and I have gotten rude looks. Fortunately the dogs I help train are protected by ADA and are clearly marked (jacket and I.D.) thePeople bringing their pets in stores/restaurants drives me crazy, especially when they put them in the cart, feed them table scraps and let them get in to things; none of these things are acceptable for service animals. I just feel that it makes service animals look bad... | |

Every service dog I have seen was wearing a vest identifying them as such. If that we're the case I imagine the lady would have told the manager that. I have no problem with a service dog being in a restaurant or anywhere else. |

Technically the service dog does not have to be in a harness or a vest. The "service dog" distinction is in the training not the attire. My Seeing Eye Dog does not have to be in harness when we go into a store but obviously she always is for my benefit.
The business is also not allowed, under the law, to ask you more than, "Is that
a service dog and does it perform a necessary service for you?". They are not allowed to ask you for Service Dog ID. They can ask you to leave if your animal is out of control or causing a ruckus in the business. Like I said, the service animal is that because of its 2 + years of training, not a vest or a badge.

Heavens, no, not at all. What did you think you would catch from a puppy?
ETA: Service dogs do NOT need to have visible ID, nor does the person need to show any paperwork that said animal is a service dog. And if the woman had said it WAS a service dog, the restaurant could not challenge her. Many people have conditions for which a service dog or other animal calms them. Plus many animals besides dogs can alert their person to an on coming medical crisis.

This was an individual asking, not the cruise line and all they asked was if the dog was a service dog. The man snapped that it was for anxiety.
I think service dogs are wonderful. They give back some of what disabilities take away. I just wish that dogs didn't make my eyes itch, burn, and swell. |

If it wasn't a service dog, it would have bothered me, but not to the point of saying something (unless it was being unruly). But then again, I don't like it when I see small dogs being carried around in ANY public building. I just don't see the point.

I don't think pets belong in restaurants. I would have said something too. A service dog is another matter, but you are right that the owner would have volunteered that instead of leaving.
I think pets belong at home. We have cats, so that is easily accomplished, but growing up we had dogs, and they went to the vet, and that's it. We didn't take them to friends or relatives houses, stores, restaurants etc. they didn't have dog parks then, but we lived in an area where they had plenty of space already, so we probably wouldn't have taken them there either.
So, call me a dog hater, but I agree with you!

Nope, as long as they maintain control over the dog then I have no issue.
The area where I live, we have a lot of cafes that have tables outside and it is very common for people to bring even big dogs. There are usually dogs sitting beside owners or sleeping under tables.
As long as they are well behaved, inside or outside then I don't see a problem - what are you going to catch from a dog several tables over? | |

When I lived in Germany over twenty years ago, people brought their dogs, huge ones too, to restaurants and the dogs sat quietly under the tables. Every once in a while two dogs would snap at each other, but for the most part, you would not even know they were there. |

I will chime in here. I have a service dog - therapy dog. I take her pretty much everywhere. I was never questioned except to pet her. She is a 100lb black lab. She wears a vest. I am also deaf but she is not my hearing dog. But when I'm at home, she has her vest off and is a normal dog. |

And she goes in restaurants and would stay under the table and for her being a lab, she is a sucker when it comes to food that fall under table. I don't feed her table scraps but she gets her own...from under table LOL! I even have her in hospital with me. She even go on vacation with me and my family. We go to wine tasting with Kota with us. I never get a dirty look from anybody (not that I know of, that is. LOL). I always have people asking oooo how did you get a service dog and stuff like that.

Around here, animals (except for service animals) are not allowed in restaurants per Health Department guidelines. A restaurant would be immediately marked down during an inspection if an animal of any kind was seen on the premises. I agree.
I don't want your dog's hair in my food, his feces tracked in on the floor of a restaurant, etc. I love dogs, I own one, but they do not belong in places where food is being prepared and served to the public. I really don't want some lady handling her dog and then picking up straws, napkins and ketchup from the communal area. Ick! |

I understand that some people would get put out from seeing a dog in restaurant or stores. I always keep in my mind and respect everyone by keeping myself and Kota as far away from the other patrons. I would ask for corner booth to make Kota as invisible as possible and she stays under the table. I teach ASL part time at community colleges and Kota of course go with me. She stays laid down by my podium and sometimes I let my students pet her before or after class but not during (duh). And she even go to church with me and my husband! She knows not to do the normal dog things when her vest is on. But when vest is off, she is normal playful dog who loves to run and fetch as well sniffing other dog's butt and whatnots. |

This is taking it a bit far. I have 2 small dogs and my husband and I are lucky to live in an area with a dog friendly outdoor mall. We bring our dogs with us often to this mall because they are welcome there. Does this make us idiots? We do not bring them to places that are not dog friendly. We have also brought them to restaurants that have an outdoor patio that is dog friendly. Does this also make us idiots because they are welcome there?
If places are marked as being dog friendly why shouldn't we be allowed to bring our dogs there? If people have an issue with us bringing our dogs to places that they are welcomed, than in my opinion they need to find another place to do their business.

Last Friday my husband had a colonoscopy and a lady was holding a 5 month old chihuahua mix in the waiting room. Then, later that afternoon, we refinanced our mortgage and someone brought a dog in the office, but I think it belonged to the kids of someone who works there. It was just weird that twice in one day I see puppies in unusual (to me) places. |
