I made the mistake of using one account for my iPhone, my son's and my daughter's iPod. At the time I didn't think there was another way to do it. Now we're hassling with the consequences. Have any of you successfully separated accounts without losing a lot of data/music/apps? I do have an appointment at an apple store on Thursday, but I was just hoping to get an idea of what our chances were of getting this resolved. Thanks for any advice or experience you can share! |

So the three of you share one iTunes account at this time? You've all purchased music and apps using that one account? I'm just trying to make sure that I understand correctly.
If that is the case, there is no way for you to separate one account into three separate iTunes account and retain all of the content that was purchased. You would have to repurchase the content on the other two usernames if you create new ones for your kids.
Why do you want to switch it into three accounts from just for one? You can manage what content goes on to the individual devices from the account using the computer, the only thing you have to make sure you keep separate is your iMessage/email accounts. |

What we do is, we sign into each others accounts if we want to install an app or music one if the others has.
You can call apple care and they can walk you through everything in the phone.
I spent three hours on the phone with them last week while we got my phone working correctly.
I hadn't been able to get email since September. I tried the apple store and they were useless. I got pretty much no help |

Just set up an account for them on their own desktop. Copy all the music you have over to their itunes on their desktop, and then make them each one of the authorized users for your music ( you can have up to five computers authorized to use music from your account, and they can still have their own account.) |

My kids and I have separate AppleIDs (so they can each use their own gift cards as they wish). It all dumps into one iTunes account where we can store our combined music. |

iTunes has a "home sharing" option that lets all the devices that are logged into one wi-fi connection play any music on any of the devices.
Of course that only works if your son and daughter and you are all connected to the same wi-fi at the time. |

There's no way to separate it. I even asked via apple support. Now that my kids are older we were going to set up separate acct.
DS gets to keep the original acct. since he's bought the most stuff. I got DD set up on her computer and I buy her a couple of iTunes cards every once in a while to help her build up her library.
DH and I need to create a new account for ourselves but most of our stuff is music ripped from our CDS and free apps so it won't be a huge loss. We'll probably wait until DS is off to college to do that.
I really exist there was a way you could split stuff up legally. |

I must be thinking of this backwards but DS buys music on HIS AppleID using his gift card, DD buys hers using her AppleID, and I have an AppleID. We can all plug into our PC and access iTunes and it takes all our respective music, apps, etc. and backs them up to iTunes on my PC.
Basically it is purchased individually on our respective AppleId's but shared via the home share option.
Are you trying to set up separate iTunes accounts for each user? That might be what I'm missing here.

You all can use one apple id. Just don't turn the icloud on. That's when things tend to get mixed up. |

Our problem is kids had nanos and then touches and everything was one account. Now that they are older teens and DD in college they have iPhones. They do have different appleIDs now, but it's too late for stuff that was bought by me on their behalf before I gave them access to iTunes ( I wanted to make sure what they bought was appropriate for their age).

I'm not SUPER Apple-savvy, but I'd say that at some point you're going to have to draw the line.
Here's what I'd do: Copy whatever music, etc. that they want onto CDs. After they each open their own accounts, have them upload the CDs onto their own hard drives (which I'd assume they each have their own computer if they have iPhones).
There's probably a better way to do it, but that's one option that comes to mind. |
