Did it stop them from eating/pooping as well?
Friday was the last time we saw kitty eating or that she pooped in her litterbox. Saturday she started peeing outside the litterbox, in the same location a few times in a row over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Still drinking OK. Took her to the vet on Monday, and they didn't find anything to indicate an infection (no temperature etc.) - told me it was likely behavioral. But nothing has changed at home (including no changes to her food, brand of litter, etc.) Litterbox is immaculately clean. Anyway, now it's 48 hours later, she is still drinking but not eating, has not pooped since Friday, and now she is peeing small amounts randomly around the house. That sounds like a UTI doesn't it? But I am not sure if the fact that she is off her food/not pooping is part of the UTI or if that is something else altogether. I think she needs to get back to the vet but am just trying to decide whether to go back to the same one we have always dealt with, or get another opinion. |

I should add - we just adopted this cat from the shelter six weeks ago, so we do not know her whole history. She's only about 7 months old. |

She probably needs to be seen ASAP. When cats dont eat it messes something up with their liver and they go downhill really quickly. I am sorry I can't remember what it is called. I am sure someone else on here knows. I am on my way out, but wanted to post. I hope your new kitty gets better soon. |

Not eating is very bad in cats- try some tuna juice while you wait, but get her today!
It sounds like a uti to me, my cat has only had one though. I've had cats do stuff like that (quit eating, pee random spots) from injury and stress, too. Cats are hard to figure out, even for vets- they get stressed and quit eating.
Hope you figure it out. | |

I would either take her back to the vet or better yet, to another vet.
I just took our cat to the vet last week because she sounded like she might have something going on with her respiratory system. She was eating good, drinking and using the litter box. She is 13 years old and did not act like anything was wrong, other than making some sort of noise at times. The vet checked and she had an infected tooth and a urinary tract infection. After she finishes her antibiotics, they will clean her teeth and pull that one if necessary.
Many times, cats will not behave as though they are sick. Since yours is showing definite signs of something going on, I would not wait to get her checked out again. If she is not eating, she will go downhill fast. Have you tried giving her a different kind of food to see if it is the food that is the problem? I would get her two or three different kinds of canned food, and give her a spoon full of each, one at a time and see if she will eat.
You can also pick a tube of stuff at a pet store or vet, called Nutri-cal . You can squeeze it into her mouth and she will get some of the nutrition and calories that she needs until she gets back to normal. |

She needs to be seen ASAP. She could either be totally blocked or on her way. We just went through this with Max--if we had ignored it--he would not have survived. Just a note--if it gets to this point, it was not cheap

Thanks everyone. I called the vet again to discuss it and they are going to prescribe her some antibiotics and a special kind of food that is supposed to be more appetizing to cats when they are sick. I am going to run out on my lunch hour to pick it up and zip home to get her started on it. They do not think they need to see her again since they checked her out on Monday. If she doesn't start eating again pretty soon with the new food and medication then I will think about trying a different vet before the end of the week. |

Did they actually check her urine? Or even offer to do blood work? I could be wrong it's been awhile since one of mine had a urinary tract infection, but I thought they tested the urine as in I had to leave them for a few hours until the vet was able to collect a urine sample to test/culture. And if that came back ok, they then ran a panel of blood work to see what else could be going on.
I would find a different vet.

Get her on antibiotics ASAP... AND get her eating! The kidney/liver nonsense starts in quickly and then its a PITA and expensive to get them back to health... I've noticed when mine gets a UTI she stops eating and grooming...she looks like death warmed over fast...and if I don't get her eating and medicated quickly, she stops altogether and then i have to get her on IV fluids(Sub-Q) twice a day...oh, fun...and yeah...been there, done that... She's 12 now, been doing it about once a year....
Hope she feels better soon!

I would second the above. Your kitty needs to eat.
I would also find a new Vet. It is NOT OK for your cat not to eat. My 14yo cat was diagnosed with Bowel Disease when she stopped eating & drinking. They did blood work as well as a cat scan, and gave her antibiotics. They advised that a cat's health can decline quickly if they stop eating. We had to force feed her (as per the above, with a tube) for about a week until she started eating on her own again. Your Vet should have at least done some blood work.

I have a sad update. After a couple more trips to the vet, we had to put kitty down today. She had feline infectious peritonitis, which is a fatal genetic condition. We are so sad. We put our last cat down at the age of 12 in November and got this one right before Christmas. We only had her for six weeks before she got sick. I guess I just never thought we'd be back in the vet's office holding a pet while they euthanize her again so soon.
This was Pip.

I'm very sorry for your loss, how heartbreaking.
FIP is a horrible disease and always fatal, there isn't anything you could have done.
Just a word of caution, it is passed on via faeces and so there may now be enough virus left in the environment to infect a new cat. Don't get another kitten straight away and do some research on how to clean the environment properly before you get another cat. I'd at least get a new bed and new litter tray.
There's some good information here
After you have had FIP in an environment, how long should you wait before a new cat or kitten is brought in, and what other steps should you take?
Remove any cat related items that you cannot wash or disinfect, such as a scratching post or soft toys. Clean and disinfect everything else in the environment that you can. Time will take care of the rest, because viruses of this type are not long-lived in the environment.
We generally recommend a couple of months. These steps are undoubtedly an overkill when it comes to FIP, but these recommendations are standard for most infectious diseases and we try to keep everything simple and consistent
