I saw this earlier this morning on Reddit, but this article from Consumerist is a little more succint.

In case you don't want to read the linked page, a group of 20 went to a restaurant and as is the case for most large parties, a gratuity of 18% was automatically added to the bill. The group then requested separate checks. When this person received their bill, they crossed the added gratuity out and added the following "I give God 10% why do you get 18". He then added the word Pastor to his signature line.

My opinion? You can't afford to tip means you can't afford to go out.

I don't even think this is an issue of not affording the tip and not affording to go out. It goes without saying that they still should have adhered to the 18% tip b/c they were a large group being served together and the separate checks does not change the fact that they required that type of attention.

I think this was a Pastor reflecting badly on his profession, using a non-relevant point to cheap out. This is why religion leaves a bad taste in people's mouths.

ETA:; Of course we can also address the issue that G-d doesn't have bills to pay or that he's also cheaping out on G-d. This guy is a flat out jerk and the fact that he's a "pastor" does not change that.

I agree with you Batya.

I know it's a csb, but I have to share. Over the weekend I was out with several of my cousins at our favorite bar. It's McSorley's, in the East Village. The bartender made a point of taking our orders over another group standing at the bar. When they complained, he responded with "They're in here all the time and they tip".

It takes all kinds, as my Mom used to say. He doesn't sound like he appreciates the extra effort the staff took to make sure his people had a good meal and a good time to boot. Many people are unappreciative; but it looks worse in a person who claims to be "a man of God."

Um. Really big time asshole. I wonder what assholic teaching this "pastor" spreads to his congregation?

You can always tell the true nature of a person by how they treat those that are serving him. It's obvious how much of a jackass this guy is.

I probably should also add that 18% is considered to be on the low end of tipping here. 20% is pretty standard and I'll tip heavy if it's a place I really like and I plan on going back there.

ALWAYS treat your waiters, bartenders and maitre d well and when you need a last minute anything they'll do what they can do help you out.

The more I think about this, the more I come to the conclusion that this person is a colossal dbag. Who the hell doesn't tip?

Tipping is just part of the bill, not really optional in my opinion. Does he not pay more than 10% for his mortgage? Does he not pay more than 10% for his golfing fees? That ten percent to the Lord is not an excuse to shirk his other bills and fees.

As a former waitress (in my college days), I can say that even *I* don't like the automatic gratuity amount. I want to tip my server based on service, and I will go well above 18% in many cases. I just prefer to be the one deciding.

BUT - since they have the legal right to do it I don't complain, but I do expect the service to be at that level.

That man went into the restaurant KNOWING that large parties get the automatic gratuity (as the granddaughter of a Pastor I can tell you that they go out to eat in large groups all the time). HIS ATTITUDE STINKS. If you don't want to pay it, then go in a smaller group or don't go.

with that attitude then I'm sure he won't mind ponying up extra state or local taxes up to 10% on every purchase that he makes. If God gets 10% why should his state only get 5% (or whatever his state tax is on purchases).

As to a forced tip? When that happens that is all I will tip, and I almost never tip less than 20% so that's unfortunate for he person who waited the table.

I think if I were his waitress or waiter I would have rather received no tip then his message.

Any Reservoir Dogs fans? The tipping discussion always makes me think of Mr.Pink.

(quote from Reservoir Dogs, Mr.Pink.)"I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job."

It's the number of people in the group, not the number of checks written that determines if the restaruant adds a gratuity to the bills. They would still have had (or should have) that 18% added to what they owed.

That minister was a jackass. And a cheap jackass at that.

ETA: I'm a 20% minimum tipper. I go to a restaurant where my bill is always $12.00 and my server, who places my order when she sees me walk in, receives a $5.00 tip.

According to the article, the automatic gratuity is for large parties. What defines a large party isn't inclued, but I'd imagine it's for 10 or more people. I can understand the reasoning behind the auto gratuity. A large party takes up more of the server's time and if the group doesn't tip or undertips then the server's time has, for lack of a better term, been wasted. I'm with you in the 20% plus camp on tipping.

If he can't afford a tip, he shouldn't be eating out. This has nothing to do with God and his point is meaningless, other than to refelct badly on him and his religion.

Just because he wrote "Pastor" doesn't mean he is one. And any church-going person who tithes could say the same thing he did. (actually, anyone can say the same thing, doesn't mean it's true)

Very true! And one reason that I knew my dh was a great guy was how he treated his employees and waiters at a restaurant.

This pastors actions further support why we have left mainstream religion behind. What a jack-hole. Quit hiding behind God and take responsibility for your bad behavior, pastor!

And this makes me sad. Whether it is right or not, people make judgements on the local church by how they perceive some of it's members behavior. Just a few messed up believers gives a bad name to all of us.

Remember though that there are more "good" people out there than "bad" and don't give up just because you have seen the bad ones.

I guess I am the only one that wonders if this is even a legit story or yet another one of the haox's where someone modified and receipt and put it on the internet to try to make someone look bad. There is nothing on the bill that shows what restaurant it is, the "waiter" is a phantom waiter with no real identity, etc. In the past, everyone of these that makes the rounds turns out to be an internet hoax to try to make someone look bad.

Soooo....since the 10 percent goes to running a church and paying its pastor....isn't he just paying his own salary with his 10 percent? Anyway.

I really don't think he is a pastor. Just some idiot trying to add a little "oomph" to his disgusting position.

Someone asked what defines a large group. I have 4 kids and Alot of places define that as a large group. I don't really think it is fair since we are a family ( and not that large of a group) . We pay the %18 but that is it. If we are not charges that we give atleast 20%

People like that make me sad because he chose to be an asshat instead of asking what Jesus would do.

And 10% is the minimum, perhaps this 'pastor' should investigate giving MORE to God. What a cheapskate and to hide behind God is cowardice!

Most Pastors that I'm familiar with tithe to their organization (ie: not to First Assembly of Portland but to the Oregon Assembly Of God head offices). Additionally, I don't know very many pastors that tithe "just" 10%. but that's another story.

While I agree that the guy was a jerk, I have a real problem with the automatic tip.

Since tips are discretionary, it's not right to force someone to pay one.

We all gripe about waiters not making minimum wage. Maybe if more people refused to supplement the income of waiters this would change. While I generally tip 20-25% I don't agree with the idea "if you can't afford to tip you can't afford to eat out".

I am so sick of these waitresses always making a big deal about tips. tHEY decided to get that job, so stop crying about how little you get paid.

While you think they have a "worse" job the fact remains that in most parts of the country servers only make $2-4 an hour. No garbage man makes that little. They must make at least minimum wage. Servers don't.

And yes, I agree they should make that, but I don't see it changing anytime soon.

There is a line on my trash bill where I can add a "tip" for the driver, can collector, etc. No lie. Same with the newspaper delivery guy (yes, ours is an adult).

I tip waitstaff because I know that they make less than minimum wage. But the whole tipping business is getting out of hand IMHO.

No kidding! I'm a christian and hated waiting on church people. You could always tell who they were....20 people with a $34 tip...sounds like a lot of running around for the waitress.

There are 2 other professions that are lousy tippers and you can tell when they enter the restaurant. (but I won't say who they are because I would get many peas mad!)

10% of your income vs. 18% on a couple hundred bucks are two totally different things. He probably leaves religious tracts as tips with a dollar bill tucked inside.

I don't see what one has to do with the other. Is the pastor comparing his tithe to a "tip" for God? That is bizarre.

Also, I thought the concept of a tithe was that it is thanks to God that you're making that money, so it's almost that God is "allowing" you to keep 90% of that money. It's not a tip on God's services.

I'm so glad I live in a country where service people already get paid an adequate wage. We might tip if the service was great, but it's not expected or required.

I'm not saying our system is better or worse, just simpler. I was so confused in the US on holiday last year with different expected tipping amounts for different services in different states, there's no way I could live with it and not have it do my head in! It also seems to create so many arguments!

Many years ago I was a waitress working to save money to go to college. The church crowd came in, large party, ran my butt off. The tip they gave me was a folded FAKE $10 bill with the message "Your tip is to go to church next Sunday". Now when I go out to eat on Sunday I always leave a good tip in case the server got a bunch of church going hypocites that day.

That kind of thing gives Christians a bad name.

Sometimes I wish there was another term for people who actually follow the teachings of Christ to differentiate them from the rest.
