I think he is a jerk and makes Christians look bad. I don't like when they do this with the tip as most of the time when they do this the service stinks. I think we tip well but don't like when it is mandatory but would never skip it. It is part of the bill and you know it up front. If you don't want to pay it don't go out to eat.

I wonder when the last time was he tipped a waiter 10% of his income? And since when does God bring you refills on your drink? He's simply using God as an excuse to be cheap. He should stay home.

Here is the FEMALE Pastor's Story :

KTVI) - A pastor says when she left a snide comment on a receipt, she did use bad judgement, but she did leave a tip. The St. Louis pastor found herself at the center of a viral mess when her receipt was posted to the online site, “Reddit”. It happened at an area Applebee's Restaurant, according to the pastor.

"What they didn't show is the money that I left and that we all left on the table," said Pastor Bell. She says she left $6.29 on the table and her credit card was also charged the tip amount. Everyone else at the table also left tips in cash.

When the receipt was posted to Reddit, reportedly by a server, people started sending her messages. I've actually been harassed because of this and it doesn't tell the whole story,' Pastor Bell says. While she admits it was a lapse in judgement, she says she and her ministry do good work around the community and would never want to tarnish the light of Christianity.

Pastor apologizes - but gets the waitress fired anyway.

She made a snide comment and then when someone posts it online, she COMPLAINS about it and get the waitress fired?

Maybe she needs to spend a little more time reading The Book and not eating out if tipping is such an offensive idea to her.

I think the pastor's behavior was terrible.

But if that server reported to me, I would have fired her too, whether or not the customer complained. You simply do not post stuff like that online.

On Wednesday, the pastor reportedly contacted the Applebee’s location where she worked and demanded that everyone involved — including the managers — be fired.

Link - waitress responds

“I’ve been stiffed on tips before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the Big Man has been used as reasoning,” she said. “If this person wrote the note, obviously they wanted it seen by someone… It’s strange to me that now that the audience is wider than just the server, the person is now ashamed.”

Yeah, why is that? Because it was not a nice thing to do, maybe? Uncalled for, even?

Posting the receipt may have been wrong, but - "don't start no trouble, there won't be no trouble - PASTOR Bell!!"

I am curious (and there was no mention in the story) if there was actually a tip left.

I've paid for the meal on credit and the tip in cash before.

I kind of hope the pastor is lying so my disgust for her is justified. But if she did pay the tip in cash all she's guilty of is a shitty comment. Oh, and being a hypocrite.

I don't know that I would have fired her; certainly some disciplinary action. But Applebee's isn't some mom-and-pop place. It's all tight-ass corporate, so she probably had to be fired.

Complete and total hijack here, but I was reading the original post on Reddit and came across this series of comments (I've deleted the names and links that were in the post--too hard to read with them in there). If you are a Big Bang Theory fan, you will love this! (If not, you may be convinced I'm going straight to hell.)

The original comment they were replying to involved the question "What would Jesus tip" and a quote from Proverbs. Here are the subsequent comments:

Um, Proverbs predates Jesus by quite a while.

SPOILER ALERT: It turns out Jesus was just God the whole time, he was just trolling mankind in an Andy Kauffman-esque prank. So technically, the whole bible was written by Jesus.

worst plot twist ever.

I thought it was God pretending he was Jesus for a brief time.

Lapse in judgment is NOT what this was. I think someone who writes something like that really does feel that way. She really felt put out by having to leave a tip, and she expressed it with a guilt trip to the person who waited on her.

It's a sad story all the way around. I agree that the person who shared that receipt online, especially with the customers sigature, needed to be fired.

First of all, this 'pastor' is an ass, and should be ashamed.

As a business owner in an industry where tipping is common, I strongly disagree with anyone who thinks that if a person doesn't want to tip, they shouldn't frequent restaurants, salons, bars etc.

When an employee takes a job, they know before accepting the position (choice) what their wage will be...anything received above that should be seen as a bonus and NOT expected.

Most people tip and the amount they give (or don't) is their business and for their own reasons.

I find it incredibly rude and disrespectful when I hear of workers in any profession whining and bitching that they didn't get a tip or don't think they got enough. That attitude in itself may be an indication as to why they didn't get a tip! Not classy at all.

I would be horrified if that sort of sense of entitlement was exhibited in my business...graciousness goes a long way.

Not everyone can afford the same in being generous with tips, and it is not the right (or place) of an employee(nor is it wise) to indicate that a patron isn't entitled to service in a business, if said patron cannot afford to give above the set price.

Well, I would have expected that whoever posted that would get fired. If you want to keep your job you don't put things like that on the internet.

But that "pastor" is a cheap bitch and too bad for her she's been caught. That's what she gets.

IDK who the cheapest people are, but I do know that ladies who work in banks are some of the worst. I know this because my mom was a waitress for a while in the 80s and they were her worst customers; and because I worked at a bank for a while in the 90s. So unless something has changed mightily in the last couple of decades, they're both the bitchiest and the cheapest. I used to be so embarrassed by their behavior that I would skip going to lunch with them.

You say you are a business owner in an industry where tipping is common. If the industry standard is to pay LESS than an employee is worth in order to "force" them to give better service for tips, then the desire for tips is not "entitlement" but something that is "earned."

In the case of waitstaff who make far less than even minimum wage, it is most definitely an expectation that the customer make up some of that shortfall with the tip, and if shecan not afford to spend more than X amount, then she needs to keep her bill + tip under that amount by ordering something less expensive or going to a less expensive restuarant.

Would you say the same thing about your customers not paying you the full price of your product/service "just because they couldn't afford it"? Do you frequently allow your customers to say to you "I know that the stated price is X, and the expected tip is Y, but I can't afford X + Y. Will you accept less than X for the service?" Especially if the customer didn't tell you this until AFTER she had used the service or product in question? If not, you are applying one standard to your price and another to the employee's "price", i.e. the tip.

If the customer can't afford both the price of the service and the tip, why should the employee be the only one that gets stiffed?

So you own a business where tipping is common and expected. But you believe that people who want the service but can't afford the tip should still be able to go out and get the service. And your employees shouldn't complain when they don't get a tip. I find your attitude to be very selfish - the cutomer gets what they want, and you get the full amount you charge for it, so for the two of you, it's awin-win. Who is losing out? Only your employees. But you don't even want to hear them complaining about it...becuase then THEY'RE they slefish ones

It doesn't even make any sense. The server wasn't asking for 18% of his salary. So it was comparing apples to oranges, unless he plans on giving only 10% of his Applebees total to God this week.

It was, imo, just a stupid way of trying to justify not paying a tip, which, also imo, should always be considered part of the cost of a restaurant experience unless the service was simply appalling.

First of all, nobody is being paid less than they're worth in my business, and they don't make less than minimum wage.

It's their JOB to give good service. Tips are an added bonus if the customer so chooses.

If a customer can't afford the prices we charge, than they would have to go elsewhere. However, if they can manage our prices but they can't afford a tip, then of course they don't tip. Just imagine if nobody tipped, so we told them not to support our business...guess who would be without a job?

Any employee who would tell a customer that they shouldn't frequent a business if they didn't tip, should be kicked to the curb. It's not their place to say such a thing and it isn't any of their business. Bad attitude.

I don't believe for a minute that the "Pastor" left a cash tip. Not with that nasty comment on the receipt. From one of the articles, it appears the waitress did not post the receipt, one of the other waitresses took a photo of it and posted it. The poster was the waitress who was fired.

"Because my employer does not pay me my full and fair wage, thus I am DEPENDENT upon others. BTW Pastor, the term "tithe" does not equal 10%, and whom ever taught you that needs to go back to theology class."

Self-proclaimed "Pastor" is not a Christian, reminds me of a few people that run around with "Reverend" in front of their names. Nothing reverent about them, pasturing themselves on their flocks.

This guy is terrible. I was reading this somewhere today, and now that he is getting flack, he's fairly poopy about being exposed. The worst of it is they requested the separate checks to try to get the tips off the bills which were all paid by the "pastor".
What an absolute shithead.

I hate to say it, but I bet I know exactly what profession that is.

Actually, I found groups of women were cheap as hell. (Sorry, but consistently experienced as a server between me and my co-workers)

Many years ago I was a waitress working to save money to go to college. The church crowd came in, large party, ran my butt off. The tip they gave me was a folded FAKE $10 bill with the message "Your tip is to go to church next Sunday". Now when I go out to eat on Sunday I always leave a good tip in case the server got a bunch of church going hypocites that day.

That's terrible.

You know, not to put too serious a theological spin on an absolutely asinine move on the part of that pastor...

...but y'all know me.

Now I live in the same world y'all do, where it seems like half of everybody has their hand out for something. Believe me. I live in this world too. Sometimes I get tired of the demand. Uncle Sam takes his cut, and then what I do with it from there - well - sometimes I feel like maybe I should get to keep a lot more of it than I do. Valid. 18% of a crummy lunch at Applebees ain't the half of it. Sheesh.

And yet... sitting in a restaurant with my church family... do I want to show you that God is generous, or do I want to show you that I'm stingy? Do I want to tip you kindly, or leave a grouchy little note to point out that I have a smidgen of power over you? Really?

For us and for our salvation, God came into this world as a helpless baby with NO power, NO means, and NO status. And He stretched out His arms, not to grab for something, but to give. To us. WHo for darn sure deserved it a lot less than the server at Applebee's deserves a gratuity, no matter how you feel about tipping. He gives because it is His heart.

And I may have a problem with the service I get in a restaurant or shop sometimes, and I speak up when I do. I still believe in customer service, don't you misunderstand me. And I can't always be generous with every request, or I would be far more broke than I already am, please do not test me on this because I can't afford it.

And I miss the mark SO OFTEN, but let me just say, if I am representing Jesus then I want you to see His generous heart whether I am tipping big or average, whether I am complaining or praising something you've done, and whether I am writing a check to your cause or saying "Sorry, not this time." And I want God to make me into a person who actually lives like that. God help me, that is what I want to be like.

So that pastor is, in my opinion, way, way, way wrong. I just think that this old world of ours needs more humility and more love and more generosity, and less jackass posturing.

My two cents worth.
