Small Update - I heard on the (local) news this morning there is now a larger reward for anyone who finds the killer(s) and brings them to the police. $5000 of the reward was contributed by the family's local church (which I think is a Catholic church). The priest of that church had a news bite on the news speaking out in outrage at the people who are hiding the shooter(s).

Besides for this girl, another boy was shot in the leg. I believe he is recovering.

=========================

This is so heartbreaking. I myself got drenched last night getting off the bus. It was very warm here, in the 60s, and pouring.

She and her friends never went to that park, according to our local news. It was a hang out for gang members so they avoided it. They only ran there to huddle under a shelter when it started pouring. She was there for only a few minutes.

She was shot in the back and died at the hospital. Her family is devastated.

She was an honor student and among the group from her school who performed at the Inaguration.

I am a believer in gun control but it wouldn't have helped here. You know the kid who had the gun had it illegally.

The other really sad thing is that there were numerous other kids and young adults at the scene and NONE of them will talk to police. NONE will help find the killer.

I don't understand...why would these two kids just get shot out of the blue? The story doesn't say anything about robbery or a fight or...?

Yes, but someone originally purchased that gun legally.

This is one of the thousands of gun deaths that devastate families every single day in this country. This one would not have even made the news had she not performed at the inauguration.

Either we do something about the number of guns, and how they are so easily getting into the hands of criminals, or we shrug our shoulders and accept the death of this child, and all the other children killed by guns.

This is a horrible tragedy and my son attends school with the young girl that was shot. He is a freshman, I kept him home today. We have been continually talking about what happened. These types of events always have different stories as to what happened. I feel awful for her mom. They got out of school early due to finals, you would not be expecting that call ever!

I didn't read the article but to answer why did it happen...very well could have been some stray gun fire. That happens frequently in Chicago.

I live in a town much much smaller than Chicago but we have murders here from time to time due to some crazy gang bangers having a shoot out and randomly hitting an innocent bystander.

To address the fact that something must be done...I find it ironic that people are still touting this considering this happened in Chicago.....home of the strictest gun laws in the nation.

More laws aren't the answer.

That is so sad. As I said following the Newtown shootings, until we focus on where the majority of shootings are and face the realities of those communities' life situations, gun violence will continue to have staggering statistics. It is not the Auroras and Netowns that are driving shooting statistics to the level they are at. It is the South Side of Chicagos and Detroits and LAs. The mass shootings are more shocking but the one-by-one murders of individuals in these communities is where the real focus needs to be.

Very sad.

I am guessing it was probably a random, stray bullet. It seems like at least here on the Boston news, they report about gang violence and a stray bullet hits or kills an innocent passerby. So tragic.

I agree with the above post regarding suburban mass shootings compared to inner city (Chicago, Philly, Detroit, Boston, LA) violence. That is a whole other debate. I am sure the individual shootings in these areas out number the other events reported by the media.

Amanda, I believe the reason Chicago's strict gun laws haven't worked is because it is just one city. All the criminals have to do to get around it is to run a load of guns in from some more forgiving area.

Stricter laws nationwide would make a huge difference. Not instantly, but over time.

I agree with the poster who said that this girl and the kids in Newtown died so that straw buyers, gun show buyers and gun collectors can continue to buy all the guns they want. The Newtown kids and this girl are collateral damage, killed so the gun manufacturers can continue to manufacture and sell guns.

Wayne LaPierre has said that law-abiding gun owners will not be blamed for Newtown -- and he hopes that his sheeple don't realize that the guns used in Newtown were legally purchased and thus the law-abiding owner should be blamed -- I hope her estate is sued up the wazoo.

You also have to realize that when gun violence increased incrementally with the increase in gun control in Chicago they were dealing with the peak in their drug problems there. It was not a strict correlation as the gun rights advocates want you to believe. It is a multitiered unique problem in the area.

Eh. That poor girl and her family.

A random bullet? There are no RANDOM bullets.

Chicago has already had 40 murders this month!

I went to College and lived in Chicago after we got married. It never ceased to amaze me the amount of violence that is tolerated by the "powers that be" in that city.

My heart goes out to her family and friends. It's an unfathomable mightmare!

One of my bff's is an American of Mexican descent and her dh was shot in Chicago as well leaving his wife with 3 daughters alone. He was working a construction job - the teenage assailant fled to Mexico. Never has been a trial or ANY attempt made to seek justice in that case. It's been 10yrs now....

There have been more murders in Chicago that in the Afghan war this yr, or in of these horrific school shootings, but where is the outrage...

Yes, they would have to go elsewhere. But, the guns that they bring back would still be in violation of the law. Because, criminals, by their very nature, don't respect laws.

Anyone know the statistics for gun related deaths in Mexico, where owning a gun is illegal? Pretty high I believe. Bad people don't obey the law, that is the problem, not the fact that guns are available to good honest citizens.

In light of her posting history, I think my interpretation of her comment was accurate. But, even if we go with yours, I still would not be quick to judge that as apathy. Perhaps terror would be a better description. I suppose that if I was living in an area where gangs ruled, I would be very fearful of pointing to a perp and risking their wrath upon me or my family. There are people in some areas of Chicago who live in constant fear. I will not be swift to judge any of them.

[quotethe amount of violence that is tolerated by the "powers that be" in that cityquote]

WTF is that supposed to mean? We have very strict gun laws. So strict they were recently overturned by the courts. What should we do? Go door to door searching for weapons? Pat own every suspicious looking person standing on a street corner? Search cars and frisk kids as they get to shcool? That would get them out of the hands of criminals, but the criminals rights are more important than innocent children's lives. 2nd amendment and all that. Can't touch the sacred guns no matter who has them. The NRA won't even back more stringent background checks.

I don't know how to get rid of the guns already in the hands of criminals in Chicago or anywhere else. We don't have exclusive rights to the problem. But to say it's tolerated is just plain bullshit.

I mentioned it - the park is a well known hangout for gangs. Obviously a gang member was trying to shoot at someone else, and they were in the crossfire. It happens far too often. It's frustrating and sad.

I think talking in that area could label you a snitch.

And we know what happens to snitches.... (Or at least I do in the movies)

Chicago beat out New York for the number of murders in 2012. Gun violence is rampant but nothing is being done to curb it. Unfortunately this girl lived in a terrible neighborhood, the south side of Chicago is not a place where anyone wants to be, ever. I had a couple co-workers refuse a call (we're EMS) because they saw gun fire being exchanged about 50 yards in front of them. OUR safety is the number one priority. Until the police start getting things under control the gangs are going to run the streets. I think that Chicago is to the point of needing help beyond the police, it might not hurt to consider the National Guard. Chicago is it's own little war zone.

Stricter laws nationwide would make a huge difference. Not instantly, but over time.

Unlikely. In Illinois to legally own a gun you first have to get a FOID card, you can't even handle a gun you're interested in purchasing until you have one and you MUST show it just to handle a gun and buy ammunition. Then you have to complete the background check before buying the gun, in Illinois there is a 3 day waiting period before you can take a newly purchased gun home even though the background checks come back in just a few hours in some cases. And when purchasing ammunition they won't even being ringing up your purchase until you show your FOID.

And if you live in Chicago and want to buy a gun you have to go through a class first before you can buy, you must show certificate of completion when buying one. Owning a gun in Illinois can be a tough process, owning one in Chicago is infinitely more difficult.

We always hear about the stories where mass shootings claim lots of lives but we never hear the stories where a shooting is stopped by an armed citizen because we are so ingrained with the thought that all guns are bad and you damn well the media won't have a positive gun story as the headline.

We need sensible gun laws, not more restrictive gun laws.

It's all just nonsense anyway!

Wow. Really? REALLY???

That is such... it's bullshit.

I am sad to say I could point out NUMEROUS news stories in my area of kids her age being shot and killed in the same random way, and NONE of them performed at the Inauguration.

Really? I just... that whole comment is just a "WTF??" for me.

I meant National news. Our local news would have a blip on a 15 year old getting shot, but unless there was something more to the story, as there was in this case, it wouldn't go any further than the local area.
