Yes, but someone originally purchased that gun legally.

According to the ATF, the most common ways criminals get guns is through straw purchase sales. A staw purchase sale is illegal.

The next would be sales made by legally licensed but corrupt at-home and commercial gun dealers. Again illegal.

The next would be unlicensed street dealers who either get their guns through illegal transactions with licensed dealers, straw purchases, or from gun thefts.

According to the ATF, theft of legally purchased guns account for a small percentage of illegals guns.

Wow. Really? REALLY???

That is such... it's bullshit.

I am sad to say I could point out NUMEROUS news stories in my area of kids her age being shot and killed in the same random way, and NONE of them performed at the Inauguration.

Really? I just... that whole comment is just a "WTF??" for me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I meant National news. Our local news would have a blip on a 15 year old getting shot, but unless there was something more to the story, as there was in this case, it wouldn't go any further than the local area.

I'm reading this from Canada and I know I wouldn't have heard this story had this girl not performed at the inauguration. That "angle" might be getting it more national converage but I don't think anyone is suggesting that it makes the other shootings any less important. They are all tragic, tragic events.

I think the issue here that is just as if not more important than the gun is that nobody is willing to help the police locate these killers. Not a single witness will help. That in itself does nothing but allow the thugs to continue to claim ownership of the area. Sad, just so sad. I hear about here in the Flint area as well. Tons of people around but not one damned person will step up. Murders don't solve themselves. This is just crazy.

Those who will not help (in identifying) in the police investigate should all be charged with obstruction of justice.

That is just f^@ked up that people cannot do the right thing

They fear for their lives from gang violence and/or retaliation. Yeah, let's charge them with a crime. Makes sense.

I'll tell you what's messed up. That a city can be so riddled with crime, and the gang violence can be so out of control that a child seeking refuge from a storm in a public park can be killed by a stray bullet. And the powers that be in that city have denied honest law-abiding citizens the right to protect themselves with means equal in force to the threat they face daily

While I do agree with your stance on gun issues, I don't think it would've helped this girl. You can't protect yourself from a stray bullet.

I agree with Batya. That bullet was meant for someone. Maybe not the person that it hit, but the shooter had the intention of killing someone. Whether or not the life of a gang member is worth more than that of an honors student is a different debate.

Yeah- leave people defenseless in a war zone and then prosecute them for obstruction of justice when they are terrified to finger the guys you are doing such a sucky job keeping them safe from.

The city government is not some dictatorship imposed upon the people of Chicago against their will. They were elected by those same people and continue to be re-elected.

OK. I didn't realize this story was national news or that anyone outside of Chicago-area knew about it.

Thanks for clarifying.

You are the one who started this thread. You made no mention of the other 2 people who were killed Tuesday.

WTF? Am I a reporter now? Is it my job to find every single related news story if I want to post one story that I think is particularly sad? Again I say WTF. *I* posted a link to ONE news story.

*I* found *THIS* story to be particularly sad because she was walking home in the rain on a day so warm it broke records, and because of the rain she ran with 10-12 other people into a park to take shelter and ended up dead. I got soaked as well. I also live in Chicago. I also ran and took shelter when it was pouring. I felt related to THIS story.

If you want to talk about other people killed on the same day, by all means have at it. Post your own thread. Whatever.

If you live in fear of your life, and you are denied the means to protect yourself, I can certainly understand why you would not be forthcoming with information that might get you or your loved ones killed.
If by protecting yourself you mean shooting back with your own gun, what's preventing those in fear of their lives from getting guns themselves?
