For those who are upset that the dog is not under veterinary care, it is my understanding that they took mama dog to the vet this morning to be evaluated.
The vet may have sent the dog home to birth, because it seems to me that birthing in a strange environment such as the vets office (which is a very stressful place) could have a negative impact on mama dog - since dogs are driven so highly by instinct, their birth process is different from that of a human. We don't know, because we don't have that report. I'm just saying that they sought advice and there are lots of reasons the dog may have been sent home to birth.
It is also my understanding that it is extremely common to lose one or two out of a litter to stillbirth.
I don't know much about the owners of this dog, but having glanced in every now and again for the last 24 hours, it appears to me that they are taking good care of her.

DANG - missed #3 also! Glad she was born alive.
Yes as other posters have said....stillbirth within a litter is common from what I have been reading.

Based on what the vet said WHEN THEY TOOK HER TO THE VET THIS MORNING the x-rays showed no more than three. Could there be more? Possible, not probable.
Given how quickly #3 came (boy, BTW), the stillborn was probably holding up the progress. |

3 pups, one stillborn, so 2 surviving. I don't think they expect any more. She just expelled the afterbirth from pup #3. She looks a lot more relaxed now. |

Here is a summary of all the events posted by one of the viewers on the site:
this is a summary of todays blessed event; noel spent wednesday night sleeping and digging. she had stopped eating and seemed to be going from restless to peaceful slumber.
megan got a good nights sleep at home while maria (with the amazing purple hair and the 5 kids at home) and carlene were with her all night.
this morning megan got back and noel went out to pee a few times.
sometime early we saw noel expel some dark fluid. she really didnt look to be in labor. the windstorm was really blowing outside and there was some concern about the trees and the electricity.
around 10am (i think) they went to the vet for xrays. soon after that the electric and the camera went out, making us all a little cra cra. the vet saw 2 and possibly a third puppy and sent them back home.
on the way home a puppy was born in the van and his pic was posted to facebook. that was at about noon. shortly after that the camera came back on.
first puppy is a male, black and merle kind of mantleey with a nice black patch over one eye. he latched on right away and his name is magnus.
around 3ish pm we saw what carlene thinks was a part of placenta pass. the next pup (a mantle) came out about 30 minutes later and although a valiant effort was made to revive it, it was stillborn.
soon after, about 4:30pm, megan pulled out, feet first, a very large mantle pup. he had a slow start but they got him going and he dove right into nursing. his name is murphy and he is huge.
carlene gave noel a pitocin shot at around 6pm and, barring a late surprise, i believe we are finished.
And within moments of that post ... another one. Looks like a girl! (Don't quote me on that. I thought I read that somewhere.)

Final (?) pup is a girl named Mariah. That makes 3. All different colors.
Someone asked about water - Carlene said earlier that Noel has been drinking a lot every time they take her outside. There are two buckets in the room near her so she can have as much water as she wants. |

You can see she's moving her eyes but not her body. I'd have that dog at the vet - but then I would never had let her go 24 hours+ in labor to begin with.
ETA: Look how th epuppy was crawling on her paw and she didn't even move. |

Noel seems like a young tired new mama. I do see she is facing the other way than she was this morning And I saw her eating earlier.
Her caretakers have been in there with her all morning petting her and rubbing her. I love watching them do that for her. She does seem to be licking her pups every once in a while now
I have never been involved in dog breeding, but know that with our horses each mare was a little different. Most of the first time moms needed more direction before they knew what to do but they caught on fairly quickly

I've been watching Noel off and on for the last couple of days and she is such a trooper! But I always thought that no one should handle the babies for fear of the mother rejecting them? I think those people are way too involved. Why don't they just leave her alone and just keep an eye on her from afar? Instead, they are right up there with her moving her puppies all the time. I don't know what the situation is because I can't hear any sound so maybe she is having some issues. She looks worn out to me. I didn't think dogs labored that long. I hope her and her babies are ok. |

They handle the puppies to get them socialized. It doesn't hurt them. The moms sometimes need help. They aren't getting handled a ton. The mom seems to be eating well, and now they have her up and walking. I'm sure things are fine. |

I wonder if they have to worry about her laying on one of the puppies? She's a very large dog and being inexperienced with a litter, perhaps they have to stay close to make sure she doesn't roll over on them. Just wondering.

Even if Noel isn't an experienced mom, it appears that her breeder and handlers are experienced so despite the fact that she looks tired and quiet today, I'm confident that she's receiving excellent supervision and care and that if there was anything out of the ordinary, they wouldn't hesitate to take her to get medical care.

Bears repeating. Remember, this isn't the breeder's first litter. Heck, this is the 4th litter in the last 6 months! She knows what she is doing.

The babies will not be left alone for at least 2 weeks. I think with Chaos it was even longer. Chaos did lay on a pup that had to be resuscitated, but quick hands and calm heads prevailed and he is now doing fine.

Noel normally lives with Megan and three other Danes. She becomes very animated when Megan comes near. Megan works at the farm so she is there daily and had probably been taking some of the overnights as well. I'm sure she is missing Megan and her other family, plus there is a lot of activity surrounding her and the babies. She'll get the hang of it. |
