We got the DVD's on Tuesday and finished watching late last night. What a season of ups and downs! Some of the dialog was hysterically funny and the acting was superb!

When Mary's baby was born I thought it was the sweetest thing and that she and Matthew were so totally happy and going forward. When they showed him driving in the car I knew what was coming. That was heartbreaking!!! They have finally moved on from Sybil, Robert, Tom and Matthew had resolved their issues and had a plan for Downton and then this happens!

I didn't realize until watching some of the bonus features that the Christmas special is actually aired ON Christmas in the UK. What a downer to have Matthew die on your Christmas day!!!

I was mostly just annoyed. Can't somebody have a baby on that show without dying? It's getting too soap opera-y for me. I understand that the actor was leaving, but still I think they could have killed him at some other point instead of immediately after having a baby.

I was annoyed with the storyline of the Christmas special, but then I thought the whole series was weak really.

The new series of 'call the midwife' however, is shaping up really well!

Wow! I haven't seen any of season 3, but after reading this and another thread I'm not sure I'm going to watch it at all! Season 3 sounds wretchedly awful!!!

I was soooo MAD about how the final episode ended. I couldn't believe the writers were killing everyone off--there was so much possibility for Mary and Matthew...finally. Then I read where it was actually Dan Stevens' fault. He decided not to renew his contract. Booo!

We just watched the last of it. Right after the Christmas episode aired I accidentally saw on FB that Matthew died in a car crash and I have kept my mouth shut about it. DH is flabbergasted that I was able to keep it to myself all this time.

We are both really sad about the ending, but I do like the way that Tom has evolved and that Thomas is somewhat redeemed. Can't believe we're going to have to wait almost a whole year for the next season.

It must be fate that I hopped onto 2Peas at this exact moment. I just finished watching Season 3 for the second time (I watched it all about 2 weeks ago and got the dvds this week). I was so frustrated that yet again I didn't have anyone to commiserate with about the rest of the season!

I'm not really sure what to think about this season. Some of it was far-fetched and a little contrived--like how when Lord Grantham finds out that his fortune is gone and my, oh my, all of a sudden Matthew comes into yet another fortune. And just when all things seem lost, lo and behold, Lavinia just happens to write a letter on the verge of death, absolving Matthew of any wrongdoing, thus allowing him to take the money guilt free...

I didn't know when Sybil died that she was leaving the show. It was obvious that when the doctors started squabbling that something was going to happen to her. I just figured she was going to get horribly sick and be in danger and miraculously pull out of it. So when she ended up dead, I couldn't believe it.

Let's see...the whole Bates/jail thing. We all knew he was going to get released sometime. But they really drug out the story line way too long. Every episode it was just another scene with Anna going to visit and nothing happening. I am relieved he is free and love him and Anna together but the whole thing was kind of drawn out.

I did LOVE seeing O'Brien and Thomas at each other's throats. Holy cow, those two are so nasty. And the worst part is that when Thomas fell into O'Brien's trap, I have to admit I felt bad for him. I never thought that would ever be possible because he was such a slimy bastard but you really had to feel for the guy.

Hmmm...Mary. She must have been amazing in bed, or I don't see why else Matthew put up with her being such a shrew. She just seemed to get nastier and nastier as the season wore on.

I really loved the scene after the baby was born and she and Matthew were just so blissfully happy. And at least me, not knowing that Dan Stevens hadn't renewed his contract, sat there like a blubbering idiot, basking in their happiness and how sweet the moment was and getting baby hungry because my youngest is 6 and he doesn't like to snuggle with Mommy anymore. But as soon as they showed him in the car, I knew exactly what was going to happen. Ok, I didn't think he was actually going to die, but I knew there was going to be a terrible accident and I got so mad! I started yelling at my computer, swearing up and down this was the absolute last episode I would ever watch of Downton Abbey, cursing Season 4 and swearing off getting emotionally involved in any sort of tv show ever again....

And then I went and watched it all again this weekend. It was so hard to watch the last episode just because I knew what was coming up and got all emotional when Mary went into labor. Stupid show!!!

Anyways. What are everyone's thoughts on how much longer they'll do the show? I mean, do you think they'll just cover a few more years or actually follow everyone through WWII? I'm curious to see how Edith handles being someone's mistress and how Mary carries on after Matthew's death.

Ok, that was my long and drawn out thoughts. Like I said, I literally just finished the last episode so I'm still fired up over the whole thing.

Julian Fellowes has said that there will be a season 4, and maybe a season 5, but that he has no interest in doing WWII. It will definitely be coming to an end.

I felt sorry for Thomas, too, and am glad he redeemed himself in the end. Do you think O'Brien is on her own now? I was hoping they would bring up the bar of soap at some point. Glad it proved a useful fact.

The Bates story went on WAY too long. I figure he was in prison for at least a year. I don't remember exactly what was happening when he was convicted, but Sybil's pregnancy lasted 9 months and he was incarcerated before that. That storyline felt like it was happening on another plane. I'm glad it's resolved.

Mary did get nastier and nastier as the season went on. I wonder if she is going to work in the business with Branson. I'm also wondering if they're going to put Branson with Rose. I hope not. I don't think I'm going to like that character.

The Dowager Countess had some great lines in the last few episodes. I hope someone does a "best of" youtube video as they have done in previous seasons. She is a scene stealer.

A few other things I forgot:

I'm curious to see what happens with Daisy-if she ends up moving to the farm and taking it over.

I also loved how Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Patmore became closer.

Oh, are Anna and Bates going to be living in the cottage they fixed up? How does that work if they are supposed to wait hand and foot on Robert and Mary?

I was actually wondering in William's father is a farmer on the Downton estate and if he's going to get the boot under Matthew and Tom's plan.

Anna and Bates are going to live in that cottage. I don't know how their schedules work. Interesting question. My husband asked if they would have kids now that they're married but I don't think there's daycare available at DA.

Ooh! One last thing!

Does anyone think "Patrick" will return, finally healed of his burns and and proof that e is, in fact, the heir? Grr...it's going to be so long until season 4!

I carefully did not open this thread until I finished watching the season yesterday.

I love seeing Branson's character growing. I'm glad he's sticking around. Looking forward to seeing what they decide to do with him.

Also love the Thomas saga, and O'Brien's genius at bringing him down, and his ability to always bounce back.

Tired of Mary's endless bitchiness, and can't imagine how much worse it's going to get now.

Shocked they did not delve into the obvious conspiracy behind Bates's conviction and harassment in prison. Maybe they'll return to that topic in season 4.

I'm totally lost I watched all 7 episodes and not remember Matthew dying what episode is that? Sybill died giving birth, so now I'm totally confused.
The last episode ended with Mary being pregnant, is there a different version for the US Market?

I know! Edith better never get pregnant, because at this point the only place to go is for her to have twins and for both parents to die within hours of the birth.

There's a two-hour "Christmas special" that wraps up the season that you've missed.

I'd guess that Anna's hours are less now that she is no longer the head housemaid, but a proper lady's maid (as opposed to being the head housemaid and helping the girls).

She basically needs to be at Downton from just a bit before Mary wakes up until she is getting ready for bed.

So I'm going to guess that Anna gets her half day off (or whatever time they show her having off) to spend at the cottage and basically, her sleeping and very early morning hours.

And I imagine Bates is the same. He doesn't bring breakfast to Robert, but he has to help him get ready earlier than Mary gets ready.

And I really wondered about Daisy & Mr. mason. We have this big scene and then nothing. So I wonder what will come of that. It's a nice non-dying "out" for Daisy if Sophie McShera ever decides to leave, though.

Maggie, I'm sorry if this thread spoiled the end for you. I thought I was very clear about this being the end of Season 3 (in its entirety). The full Season 3 DVD's became available in the US this week I posted this for those who had completed the entire season.

I did see where you had posted about Matthew dying on the weekly thread for his week. I hope you come back here or there to see that you have put that HUGE spoiler in that thread so that you can go remove it. Otherwise a lot of other peas are going to be pissed!!!
