I want to avoid the dreaded Mom jeans look, but I'm not exactly sure what they are.

Think circa 1980s - high waisted, straight legged, maybe slightly highwater. Did I mention high waisted?

Meh, I rock the mom jeans. They are what fit my body type best.

I'd rather have pants at my waist than be constantly tugging them up and pulling down my shirt to cover my crack.

To each their own...

I saw this blog post linked on pinterest and I thought she did a good job at showing how to select flattering jeans and avoiding the "mom jeans" look. It has less to do with where the waist is and more to do with the placement of the back pockets.

I have more than one pair of jeans in the brand she highlighted as Mom Jeans. I love them, the fit my shape and according to everyone who's seen me wear them, they make my butt look GOOD. Mine are not too tight, not too high waisted but not low-rise either, not too short, but they are solid black.

Again, to each their own.

You can wear more stylish jeans and not show your crack. There are jeans with the one inch flies that, yes, will reveal your arse if you so much as lean forward.

But there are a lot of brands that are cut in a more flattering way that don't give up the goods. One brand is sold at Nordstrom and it's called Jag. And I don't wear heels with my jeans either. Typically I wear Uggs and the length is fine.

I wear low cut jeans (they work best with my body type anyway), and then I simply wear the longer shirts....problem fixed: no crack showing.

Same here. I usually also wear a tank/cami type shirt tucked into my jeans under whatever shirt I'm wearing. Low waisted jeans are way better for my body type (any fat I have is around my middle).

What in the world? Of course not. There's always a nice middle ground. Check out a bootcut jean. Those are flattering on everyone and not the least bit Mommish.

You can wear low rise jeans just add a belt of have them taken in at the waist.
Plumber's butt is a result of jeans too big in the waist and muffin top means the waist is too small.

The link to the blog does a good job of explaining. I think as well as the fit, the wash and stitching can also be a red flag for mom jeans.

I'd go naked before I'd wear jeans with those damn high pockets.

Most jeans aren't as low-rise as they were a few years ago, and some brands even make the back a little higher to avoid showing your undies.

If the Not Your Daughters jeans are too long and you buy them at Nordstrom (seem to be the best price and range I've found) they will alter them for free.

I can't stand mom jeans! They make my rear look so big! My rear looks smaller when I wear low waisted jeans, but if I'm sitting, I have to wear a sweatshirt tied around my waist because even with a belt, they wear lower than I prefer!

I just give up on jeans. I would pay so much money to buy jeans that are comfortable and fit well.

I guess it depends on what you think looks good on YOU. I proudly wear Mom jeans, and grew up in an era where flat butts were desirable, and I didn't have one. Now I do. I flaunt it in my Mom jeans. Well, I'm a Mom, and a grandma. I'll never be anyone's idea of a fashion maven.

OMG! I majorly scored today at Nordstrom Rack!

I got 7 pairs of jeans. 6 are NYDJ and they were $15 each except one pair that was $30. But they made my tush look so good, I bought them anyway. I also got a pair of Kut from the Kloth for $12. then I found a pair of NYDJ capris for $5. Oh and a 100% cashmere sweater for $20.

Then I scored 3 pairs of jeans at Gap for $4.97 to $8.97.

Great shopping day! Now to clean out the closet.

I already have a flat butt so I have never needed the 'help' of mom jeans to make my butt look like a skating ramp!!!

I do not show my crack and do not wear super low rise jeans. I have just found jeans that work for me

That blog post was great

I've seen the link that mirabelleswalker provided before. But this...

4. If the jeans come in sizes small, medium and large and they have a completely elastic waist, you’ve gone way beyond Mom Jeans. You are at the point of Grandma Jeans. Turn yourself in immediately to someone who can help you with your problem.
...makes me laugh every time!

And I think I'm missing something. "Mom jeans" make my butt look rounded and pert. The low rise jeans with long, low pockets I tried on today made my butt look flat.

What am I doing wrong??? Or maybe I still don't know what mom jeans are.

Im with you, Stef. I do have some 'fashionable' jeans, but I also have some mom jeans.....and I like them!

They're comfortable and I see nothing wrong them.

Honestly, I found that blog that was linked to be kinda rude. I know it was written in a joking/tongue in cheek manner but I didn't care too much for it.

When she said that the jeans should not be a uniform color I kept thinking that for occasions where its ok to wear jeans, but a 'nice' pair, I like my solid color darker denim jeans for that. I think they look 'dressier' than your average non mom jeans.

Now Im off to join the National Fuddy Duddy Association!

i think the blog certainly covered ALL the 'mom jean bases'!!

i always wore levi's 501 (men's). i've strayed and tried other things but haven't clicked with any brands. maybe i'll go back. lately i have been wearing skinny-ish jeans with a mid-rise... i haven't analyzed the pocket angle or placement yet...

i jeans and will never give up on them!

The blog post link -

I have never been much of a belt person, but my sister lost weight and gave me a couple of really cute belts. I used to wear long shirts to cover my backside with lower jeans. But sometimes, there were.... slippages.

It's handled now with the belts.

I never was comfortable in mom jeans either. I used to Levi 501's as well back in the day. So many options now.
