I have an office supply store date stamp and a Dear Lizzy Neopolitan date stamp. I cannot get the thing to stamp properly! I'm always either missing part of the date/phrase, or, if I'm very careful to get it stamped, I get the edge of the roller on it. What is the technique to use these? I have a similar problem with long, skinny stamps. One I have is a row of dots followed by the numbers 1-9. |

I think you have to be really careful when inking the stamp--very lightly tap the stamp on the ink pad a couple of times making sure not to rock the stamp. When stamping, same thing--be sure not to rock the stamp on the paper. Also, when using long, thin phrase stamps, if I push the stamp down too hard on the paper, the letters/words tend to smoosh together.
One thing I noticed for me at least is I have to make sure to use a stamping block that's the closest in size to the stamp. I noticed if I use a stamp block a lot bigger than the stamp, I've had a tendency to get extra ink on the block which has transferred to the paper. |

Oh, and I always do a test stamp or 2 before I stamp directly on a LO. This way I get a feel for how much ink I've used, how much pressure to use, etc. |

It is very easy to get ink on the edges of a roller stamp. I always check mine and use my finger to wipe ink off the edges if any is there before stamping. Otherwise, I stamp and enjoy how it comes out. Sometimes it fun when it's not so perfect. |

I agree with both posters above! Multiple gentle taps work better than pressing the stamp into the ink really hard, and I keep a baby wipe handy to clean up the edges before stamping.

I hear ya! Even though I always do a couple of test stamps, it's very hard to get it right. |

Good post! I have problems with the date stamp too. I will definitely try some of the tips here! |

I have been having the same problem with date stamps...I've pretty much given up on them and just write the date myself

I used to use one for work back when I was a teen in the 60's. It NEVER came out clean. I think the "look" is designed for what Patter described.

I definitely have the same problem. Now when I use a date stamp, I kind of expect it to come out a little wonky and actually don't mind the look. Just "roll" with it! |

I was having the same problem and I just recently bought Versafine ink and when I tested it, it was clear as a bell. No smudges or smears or ink where it shouldn't be. |

So glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I always take a few practice stamps before I actually stamp on my layout, but when I think I've got it right...I still mess up on the layout. So disapointing.

I never get my date stamps quite right, so I like the trend of repeated stamping of the date with the ink getting lighter and lighter. I actually got the date stamped pretty evenly on my last layout, but I missed that extra repeated stamping look, so I stamped the date again anyway...go figure!!

My general approach to stamping is that it isn't suppose to be perfect. Once I adopted that mindset all was good again. |

I have been using the Staz On ink or I use markers to ink the stamp and those help to make it look better. |

I had the same problems and then started using my Stampin' Up! markers to ink the stamp. That way I can keep the ink off the edges. Also, I roll the stamp a little back and forth to get all of the date to appear. |

I feel roller date stamp challenged, too. I always try it out a few times before, and my practice is better than on the page. I often have to fill in the bottom of the date numbers with a pen.
But I still love them. |

They are a bit of a pain to use, but I am embracing the messy stamping. |

I never get a nice image with my date stamp. So I've decided just to embrace the mess and go for that incomplete, grungy look. I usually stamp a few times over and over above or below the initial impression. |

I don't have a problem inking - I have a problem lining it up! It is always above or below where I think it will be. It only bothers me when I'm aiming for a small space or tag or something, but it for someone who never really needed a SAJ even with red rubber, I can't manage those little guys

Put me in the gave up and learned to embrace the imperfection camp. I am going to try some Versafine ink though. |

Put a piece of foam, or a mouse pad, under the paper before stamping. It makes a huge difference. I forgot to do that last night and totally screwed up my finished layout. Then I stamped it again with the foam; that time it turned out great, now I have a wonky image with a clear image above it. Embracing the wonkiness.

Some great tips! I've had the same issues and to some degree, I've come to accept the imperfect stamping, even stamping off 2-3 times right on the layout. |

My roller stamp is always very iffy on getting everything down. So much so that I was thinking of buying another one to see if it was just me or the stamp itself... I have tried being very careful but geez it just doesn't work. |

I don't dip my stamper in ink. I use a pen (like a Zig pen) to color the date. Then I stamp onto my paper. |
