My daughter, who received her BA in Philosophy/Theology has been invited to present at two different conferences coming up:
In March, in Seattle, she'll be presenting "Between Uzzah and the Hemorrhaging Woman: the Effect of the Incarnation on the Meaning of Holiness" at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Wesley Theological Society.
In April, she'll be in Springfield, Missouri for the Subverting the Norm Conference. Her topic this time: "Eucharist as Deconstruction".
I basically have no idea what either of them means.
I'm trying to figure out a way to make it to the Seattle event. I can't go to the April one because my son and his team of student American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) members will be competing their concrete canoe at the regional conference in L.A. Here's a video that shows them working on their canoe in the early stages (he's in several shots, always wearing a red hoodie jacket):
A canoe made of concrete?
He got "pulled up" to become the construction captain in November as the guy who had been chosen previously had to drop out (of the team, not school!). That has never happened in their 20+ years: a second-year student being ANY kind of captain, let alone overseeing the construction of the dang thing.
So, yep... pretty dang proud of these two.

That's so cool! Good for them!!
I basically have no idea what either of them means.
I'm so glad you said that, stops me feeling quite so ignorant

That is awesome news. You can tell that you did a great job raising your kids. They both seem like they have a good head on their shoulders, especially being so young. I hope they continue to have success.

Cool! I was also a philosophy and religious studies major (as well as women's studies). Both topics sound very interesting, especially the first one. Congratulations to her!

Congratulations to both of your kids and to you too, Mom! You have every reason to be proud.
I would love to hear dd's first presentation. It's about law and grace. Don't worry I didn't know all that off the top of my head. I played the part of the hemorrhaging woman (woman with issue of blood for 12 years) in our church's Easter play for several years so I have studied that a bit. I knew Uzzah was from the Bible but couldn't place the name but Google got me there in about 5 seconds.
In the Old Testament,Uzzah was killed instantly for touching/steadying the ark of the covenant. I never understood why until just now. (BTW the link answers that question on gotquestions.org)
In the New Testament, this woman has been hemorrhaging for 12 years. She's spent all her money on doctors trying to fix her problem. Jesus comes to her town. She comes behind him, touches the hem of his garment and is immediately healed. Jesus knew that power had gone out from him and asked, "who touched me?" There were so many in the crowd that his disciples were basically like, "Are you kidding?" She came forward and confessed, and Jesus blessed her. "And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague."
Uzzah was killed for inappropriately touching the ark of the covenant, the representation of the presence of God. Only certain people were allowed to touch it, and in a certain manner.
Yet this woman touches Jesus, God in the flesh, and is given grace and wholeness. An unapproachable God to a God who is not only approachable, but desires people to bring their needs to him. Law vs. grace. That's the effect of the incarnation.

It's weird, but every time I read something like this, I immediately think that there was a physical reason, too. Maybe it had an electrical charge inherent to it's surface and touching it would electrocute the person.... hence the "Don't touch!".
Sounds like it would be a fascinating speech - both of them - and the teams working on those canoes have way too much fun. Great for both of your kids. You have every reason to want to share your news.

Thanks, ya'll! I keep asking to read Keegan's papers that she's submitted to be considered for the conferences, but she keeps "forgetting". I believe she secretly thinks I'm too ignorant to understand them. J/K. A little.
Seanna - no word from Vandy yet, so I guess that's on hold.

And, Jen, thanks for the great summary. It really is a beautiful reminder of the personal relationship Christ desires to have with us that is so different from the Old Testament laws.
