I want to circle something in color. I use the ellipse tool, circle it, then click simplify to outline my selection and choose the stroke. But then how do I get the color inside my circle to be clear? Help please!

I'd just select it with the magic wand and delete it

I'm not quite sure I understand, but try this: using the circle marquee tool (that you used to create your stroked circle), draw your circle on the layer you want "hollowed out" so you get the marching ants. Then click delete. Anything within the circle will be deleted. Does that help? If not, maybe tell us more specifically what you are trying to make clear.

Hmm.. I think I said it wrong. I'd like to circle something in color, but have the inside be transparent so that the text underneath shows through. I can figure out how to circle and do the "stroke outline" but then my circle is still filled in with a color. How do I get it to be clear? Thanks!

Okay (I have PSE11 if that makes a difference)

so you have created your circle and simplified it
added a stroke outline of the colour of your choice

next

Press Ctrl whilst selecting the circle layer (should select the whole circle including the stroke)

Go to Select > Modify > Contract then insert the number of pixels that was the size of the stroke outline

Edit > Cut

Hope that works for you. And I learned something too!

Okay after you cut out the circle (which, by the way, could be done by any of Janelle's, Suzanne's or my methods!), draw your circle again on a new layer, and with the foreground color the color you will want, click edit>fill layer and click your cursor within the circle. Go to the opacity percentage above the layers palette and turn the opacity down to maybe 20%. Your text layer will need to be below the colored circle layer. Did that work?

here's what I'd do

1. you have whatever you want to put a circle around on one layer
2. on a new layer (Shift-Ctrl-N) using your circle marquee tool draw a cirle around the item (it will have dancing ants. DON'T FILL IT IN
3. highlight the new layer, go to EDIT|STROKE-Outline selection, make sure you have the foreground color selected (the top square at the bottom) and select how thick you want your line. (I usually select INSIDE) and click ok
4. Hit esc to deselect marquee ants.

Another way is to select an empty circle from the custom shape tool and draw it around your selected item on a separate layer.

As long as it's on a separate layer you can resize, reshape even and recolor.

Thank you, everyone for your suggestions. Debikins, I used your method and it was super simple. Thanks!

Glad it worked for you. There are so many ways to do the same thing in PSE, ususally you can find one you like.
