For the past three or so weeks, she has been experiencing lots of gi upset...severe diarrhea off and on,and now, bleeding. She had an appt. today with a gi doctor and is having a colonoscopy on Friday. Of course, my mind has only gone one place. I'm sure hers has too.
What else can cause those symptoms other than the obvious? She's also lost some weight without trying, but blood work she had recently came back normal.

There can be lots of things- irritable bowel, etc.
Don't worry until you have a reason to worry.
The BEST thing is she is being proactive about it. Doing nothing is far worse.
Hugs- I hope you get wonderful news about your friend soon.

She could have a nasty gastric bug and the bleeding could be due to breakdown of mucus membranes due to the diarrhoea. Other than that, it could be a sudden onset of an inflammatory bowel disease such as Colitis or chrohns disease. It cold also be what you are fearing such as a tumour, but that is the least likely unless she has a contributory disease, family history etc. the good news is she has acted wisely and quickly to get diagnosed and the necessary tests are being done.
As someone who has had inflammatory bowel disease for over 25 years and also developed colon cancer as a result I am proof that these conditions are treatable, should your worst fears be correct!

I have Crohn's disease so that's where my mind went. That or Ulcerative Colitis.
Could the bleeding be from a hemoroid that has ruptured due to the diarrhea? Hope you get some answers on Friday.

I was thinking ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.

My DD has both Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis and she experiences those symptoms

I had same symptoms which I ignored for a few months
I had Stage 4 colon cancer
I saw gastro doctors from Sloan Kettering give a talk which they emphatically stated
If you are ever bleeding from your bottom assume it is cancer until we rule it out
Strong language but so many of us gloss over this region and it can end up badly
I thought it was my hemmoroids too
Sending prayers to your friend that its not what we fear
