We're heading to the doctor as soon as I get his younger sisters on the bus, but I cannot figure out what's wrong with this child.

This is day 3 of being sick. He's 13 and he's never sick. He's often a perfect attendance kid. He loves school & can't stand being absent...so I truly don't believe he's faking or just wants to get out of going.

His symptoms:
he says he has a terrible headache
stomach trouble, loss of appetite - but this comes & goes. He was able to eat supper last night but says he can't eat breakfast this am or he'll get sick.
He's exhausted, just lays on the couch & sleeps off & on
His throat hurts
no fever - or if he's had one it's been super low...like 99.5

He looks miserable. It's almost an effort to get him to talk. The past couple of mornings he's gotten up to go to school but then says he just can't do it - and since this is a kid who always goes to school, even when he has terrible colds - I'm keeping him home. He is not himself.

The only thing I can think of is mono.

But I thought you ran a fever with mono.

Any ideas?

It could be the flu. I've read that this flu doesn't always have a high fever. The headache and sore throat and lethargy are symptoms.

Thanks...I didn't realize that. I had the flu a couple years ago & ran such a high fever I just ruled that out right away.

I also thought it could be the flu but it could be mono (though I don't think you usually have headaches with mono) but it could be.

Sounds like one of mine when he gets strep. Mine doesn't always get a big sore throat with it. All the other symptoms are right on.

Scarlet fever. DD had it last year. Some symptoms are the same. She had no fever. Was very sick for a month. Hope you find out what is wrong. Hugs

Strep...didn't even think of that because again, I always have a high fever.

Thanks everyone!

That sound like this years popular norovirus. 1 bout with severe nausea ( or vomiting ) severe headache then 7-10 days of lethargy with varied digestive system issues and headaches. We had that lovely sickness in our house. It really was bad.

I hope he feels better soon

Eta yes it could be strep

Hope he is feeling better soon. It is just so hard to see them sick like that and not know what it is.

The first thing I thought of too was Mono, if it is a physical ailment. With Mono you do run a low grade fever. (I had it in my early 20's.) But I would also prob deeper to see if something is stressing him at school or with friends. Is he being bullied?

My guess is flu or Mono.

Thanks everyone.

They tested him for mono, and the initial results were negative. Doctor says he does fit the symptoms & we can't rule it out until we get a negative result from the lab in 2 days.

In the meantime, just treating it like a virus - strep test was negative too - he's still sleeping, not eating...hopefully it will run it's course & I'll get my quirky, sarcastic teenager back in a day or two!

As far as bullying or a romance that's gone south, it's entered my mind. But, it just doesn't fit. He really does have symptoms.
I don't think he could keep up with sleeping non stop for 3 days & barely eating (he's a 13 year old boy - he eats A LOT)...and he has run a fever. Just a very low grade one - nothing above 100.

Thanks again. I hate the "mystery" illnesses. I like to know what they have & how to treat it.

If not strep, then my guess is mono also.

I was going to say mono. Whatever it is, I hope he feels better soon!

I know a couple different families who have had this - they have been tested for strep, influenza, and mono - all were negative. It's just a weird virus going around. Unfortunately, it does seem to take quite some time to recover from

It sounds like he is dealing with what I have been dealing with. The doctor did a flu test but that was negative. I was going to be surprised if it was flu. I was really down for about 4-5 days. That was 2 weeks ago. It still takes some time to get my head clear in the morning. The doctor had me taking Mucinex D. It seems to be running its course. I can eat again. I have a cough that is still hanging on but I feel much better. However, I am now getting close to 3 weeks since it started.

I hope your son feels better soon.

Did he get a flu shot? Maybe he just has a super mild case.
