i don't understand who these people are who need to be stocking up for a snow storm? we're in MI, and even in the worst blizzard of 1978 teh roads were only closed for 4 days, even in the rural areas where my parents lived. are these people really not keeping enough food in their house to last 4 days?
No a lot don't or can't keep food on hand for emergencies. And I have been in hurricanes where our power was out for well over two weeks. Food hard to come by until help came in and even then it was hard for some things.
It isn't always cut and dry. People from Sandy are still having issues. |

The news reports are a bit over the top. I live in SE Michigan, the prediction for the area I live in is 2-4 inches, that's nothing, yet this morning on the news a field reporter was reporting and showing the small patch of snow on the ground, going on to say tomorrow this will be covered in snow! Really, is there not anything a bit more newsworthy when we are still a day away from the snow arriving?
The meteorologists seem to be beaming with joy and blowing things out of proportion once again!

We had a bad blizzard here in 09 where we lost power and water and phone for two weeks. I now take blizzard warnings seriously and get my butt out and stock up on stuff. Better safe than sorry.

I have to admit to being guilty of not having a very well-stocked pantry. But it is stocked enough to feed us for quite a few days. Our meals just wouldn't be particularly yummy. I did go out last night to get milk, bread, snacks, and apples. Mostly because I WANT coffee tomorrow with milk in it, and I don't want to go out. I'm glad I went out last night. I drove by Big Y on the way home and it was insane.

As a friend of mine says after all the hoopla over the snowstorms: "and this report was brought to you by Stop and Shop." LOL.
LOL!
I don't even live in new England. I live in NE PA. We're supposed to maybe get up to 5" in our county. Possibly only 3".
I went to the store this afternoon, thinking nothing of it and groaned when I saw the parking lot.
I tell you, if I hadn't just spent the last 25 minutes driving to that store, I would have gone back home.
I was going because I wanted to get the weekend food before the actual weekend, but the milk, bread, & egg folks were definitely out in droves.
Stay warm and safe all of you getting real amounts of snow.

If it was my regular shopping day, I would have moved my shopping day up a day. Not only are stores crazy busy right before a storm, but they are typically out of anything I want.
What I did find funny one year was the number of people buying shovels before a big storm. I live in Colorado...shouldn't you have a snow shovel? |

I think most folks have enough food to live on for four days-I know I do but I am still going to the grocery store because today is my regular day to shop and I WANT some things
I dont understand why people have a problem with this at all. if you dont want to go to a grocery store before a big storm-DON'T DO IT. why is it so odd to want to stock up on some things before you are stuck in the house for a couple days? the only odd thing to me would be going out in the midst of the storm because you need potato chips or something-stocking up BEFORE the weather gets here is perfectly reasonable. not to mention, there ARE people who <gasp> lack the resources to stock up. they live paycheck to paycheck, and can only afford to buy just what they need from one week to the next.
I too, stock lots of fresh fruit and veggies-and I prefer fresh to frozen or canned-I'm willing to go to the grocery store and deal with crowds to get them. we eat very little processed foods and that does necessitate trips to the store on a regular basis to get the things we need. if a storm or illness or something else prevented me from being able to go-I wouldnt go and we'd do just fine-living on what I have in the freezer and pantry. since I don't "have" to live on my pantry stock I'm not going to. I am planning on doing some cooking this weekend and I use mostly fresh ingredients in my cooking |

We certainly wouldn't starve with what I have on hand on any given day, but it's a matter of getting in some things we might want to have on hand (ingredients for a special meal) and that as a family of six, I buy perishables more than once a week.
I promise not to run over anyone with my cart to get the last roll of toilet paper. |

For those of you who don't understand why some folks stock up, we've had major power outages due to storms in our area in the last few years. Not everyone has generators and if our grocery stores are closed because of lack of power, you're essentially screwed if you haven't stocked up.
After Hurricane Irene, our local store was closed for almost a week.
And I just heard a prediction on NBC of 27.8 inches of snow for my town. Not fun. |

My DS lives in NYC & honestly, without a car I don't know how he would buy enough food to last a week because I'm not sure how he'd get it home. He may be different though because he's a single guy who doesn't cook much. I'll have to check in with him to see how he's preparing for the upcoming storm.
He's a grown man so he can certainly fend for himself but it might be amusing to see how he responds. |

In our area, if we are supposed to get 3 inches, the weather forecasters say "our area is going to get slammed with snow". We live in western PA, where we do get snow. So no one would call that "slammed: with snow. Now I understand 3 inches of snow in some areas would be considered "slammed". But not where we live.
I do think the news and some people love the "excitement" of a big storm. Their part of the country is getting so much attention, and the storm is covering so much of the area. That I like too! And the first maybe 2 days of the snow. After that, I'm ready for the excitement to be over. We hardly ever get power outages in our area, even when we got 3 ft. (expecting 6 inches) a few years ago. I can't go more than a couple days without my Target!

Its not that we don't have enough food to last a few days but we have a baby and I needed to make sure we had enough baby tylenol (she's teething) and more formula than I would ordinarily keep on hand. And make sure my parents were set because my dad is undergoing chemo and can't do the same things he usually does (get gas for thier generator, ice melt, etc). |

I need to go grocery shopping because its the end if the week not because we're getting snow. But I'm dreading it! I may wait until it actually starts snowing before I hit the stores then maybe the crazy people will already be home.
I also live in an area that is accustomed to snow and most people already drive 4 wheel drive vehicles (cause its the thing to do not because its a mountainous area) do there's really no reason to freak out over some snow. I'm assuming its all the transplants because those who grew up here should be used to it. |

Don't get me wrong, of course they need to inform us of the weather. However, don't you think they go overboard? I'm not talking about the meteorologists, just the news in general. I think its great that they tell you what to expect and what dangers to be concerned about. That is their job, but they sensationalize everything!
My thing is about how people panic. Being prepared is appropriate. Watching out for loved ones and others is appropriate. I have a friend with 3 kids down the street whose husband is travelling. I checked in with her to make sure she is okay and didn't need anything. She is from the South and not used to big storms. We went over the things she might need if they lose power.
I did go to the grocery store yesterday, but only because I needed food. Not because I needed supplies to survive
Be safe everyone! We are in NH and not much is happening yet. It has started to flurry and turned dark. (dh just got back from the bagel shop!!). Hope those in the path who recently suffered with Sandy are okay. I know the last thing you guys needed was another big storm!!

are these people really not keeping enough food in their house to last 4 days?
If my stove worked, and my refrigerator worked, and I had water, then sure, I have plenty of food for 4 days. But when we do get bad storms, or even slightly bad storms, we tend to lose power, in which case we lose those 3 things.
So since we don't typically keep a lot of prepackaged grab and eat type food in the house, if I think there's a chance for a power outage combined with bad roads, then I do need to run out for that type of thing. Because frozen soup or last night's leftovers or jars of uncooked rice don't help much in those cases.
The stereotypical milk & eggs really don't do me a bit of good without power. So I don't bother with those. I just joke about them. |

THIS!!! It's the fear, uncertainty and doubt factor.
Plus, many people here in Mass. lived through the Blizzard of '78 so every time the word blizzard comes up there is panic. Back then people weren't able to get out for a week after the storm.

no, I dont think they do. given how many dumbasses ignore weather warnings and do foolish things that get others or themselves killed or injured-it's clearly necessary. weather situations like this ARE serious-something people seem to forget. it WILL be very dangerous later to be out and about. people WILL get killed as a result of this storm. warnings and news coverage is adequate and necessary, IMO. how people interpret this stuff and act is THEIR responsibility. I dont think blaming the media for someone going apeshit and acting stupid is appropriate. this liberal believes in taking personal responsibility
I went to the grocery store early this morning and a small specialty market (need my wheatgrass, lol)on my way home from a doctor appt. both places were certainly busy but there were no panic buyers-just people stocking up-mostly on perishables. the shelves at my big supermarket were pretty well stocked as well.

I'm often wonder why most stations feel the need to use over-the-top names for their weather desks, where every day is treated as a rain/snow/heat/[name your index] emergency.
I realize there's a need to be alert for extreme weather but is it really necessary on a 75 degree sunny day to hear "and now over to Storm Desk Five for the weather!"

I waited til this morning when it was snowing to go my errands. I went to babies r us, target, and the grocery store. There were only a couple of people in front of me at any of them. The roads were wet but fine and visibility was absolutely no issue. |
