We are not allowed to send in any kind of food or candy to ds's school. I still wanted to send in something fun with his Valentine's day cards. I found this idea online and ds (who is in kindergarten) loved it. My mom thinks its inappropriate.

What do you think?

ETA: In case you don't want to follow the link, it is a card that says "Whoopee! It's Valentine's Day" with a whoopee cushion attached to it.

ETA #2: If it makes any difference, I already bought the whoopee cushions. They are different from the ones in the link. They are red with white hearts. Some say "Love is a gas" and the others say "Love stinks." They came individually wrapped and I planned to keep them wrapped and attach them to the card.
Here is the link to those.

I am actually surprised some of you agree with my mom. I just thought she was being an old "fart."

Well, if she thinks it's inappropriate because whoopee is another word for sex, I think she's overreacting.

However, I am not a fan of bodily-function humor, so although I wouldn't necessarily find it inappropriate, I just think something that is meant to make fart sounds is gross.

No candy for Valentine's Day? That's sad. I do like your idea. Is your mom thinking of the name whoopee as another name for sex or the fart humor is inappropriate?

My daughters would think that was the funniest thing ever if they got or gave a Valentine like that.

But I don't know what the teacher would think.

I love whoopie cushions, but not appropriate for 5 year olds. 5 year olds should have bubbles and "cute" stuff.

As the mother of boys who gets tired of all the sweetness around Valentine's Day, I LOVE them!

True, the teacher probably won't like them, and there will be a few parents who will be offended, but any teacher worth her salt will be able to keep the kids from playing with them until they get home. Any parents who are offended can also put their set limits and take it away from their little darlings.

I would totally do it.

At the local elementary, kids aren't allowed to open their valentine's at school.

They each have a decorated paper lunch bag, the kids go around the room and filled the bags, then the teacher and whichever parents are there for the party staple them shut.

So, I'd say (at ours) the teacher would say a silent thanks, and the bus drivers would be po'd....

I personally find bodily noise jokes to be tacky and not even slightly funny.

I wouldn't do it. While you may think its cute, there's too much chance that other parents may not agree. I'd stick with something inoffensive like cartoon characters.

As the mom of 2 boys I'm used to off-color humor. Those wouldn't bother me a bit.

I do think that the glow sticks would be better recieved. Glow sticks are a big hit with kids of that age.

My boys would talk about those for years to come. If you cannot give candy, what do you expect? It is very creative. One of mine came back from something with a whoopie cushion a few years back. They still talk about that and had so much fun with it. Yes, I could live w/o all the body humor but in reality I know it is not going to happen.

I wouldn't give something that at least a few of the parents will "make disappear". That would make the kids sad

haha! While we can send in candy for Valentine's Day because they won't be eating it in school, we cannot send in any food items for birthdays. DS has a classmate whose mom is a real pip (I mean that in a good way) and she sent in whoopie cushions for the class for her DS's birthday. I thought it was hilarious. The teacher held onto them until the kids were dismissed for the day. She handed them out as each child walked out the front door of the school. The kids loved them but DS's class is predominately male.

ETA: I think the Valentines are cute.

I love it and say go for it! It's not about whether *we* find fart humor funny--*they* do. And this is about the kids. It's harmless, silly, juvenile humor. Can we just let kids be kids and be amused by stuff like that. FGS why do we have to police everything they enjoy when it's harmless?

ETA: I just asked my 13 year old dd what she would think if she got something like that in elementary school. As soon as I described it, her face broke out in a big smile and she said "That's cute!"

I guess I'm an old fart too, but I don't expect my kids to bring home fart noise machines from school.

That said, I know there are always parents who won't just send in Valentines; they have to add something to make theirs 'special.' I am more in favor of just sending in the Valentines and leaving off the 'gift.' It has always been so since I was in elementary school 50 years ago. One or two would have a lollipop or candy hearts attached and theirs would be the 'best' Valentines, so kids would see, nope, nothing attached to this one - next..

Scoot over on the fart bench...I found those online and my 8 yo DS is doing them for his class.

Honestly, I find a lot of the smarmy, slightly-sexy and/or sexist sentiments on some of the pre-made Valentine cards a lot worse than a whoopie cushion.

I say hand them out!

I would be very upset if my kids get that for VD at school.
Schools are already filled with kids that have bad manners and that think that bodily functions (burp, pass gas) is a great way to express themselves. Why would you want to add to this problem?
Ugh! No wonders there are some many children out there that act like animals in public settings.

Would some of you really take a Whoopie cushion away from your kid

Am I really the only one who will occasionally "misplace" a junky little toy that drives me absolutely bonkers?

I wouldn't rip it out of her hands, but when the thrill was gone and it was abandoned under the bed for the cat to play with, I might find it a new home, if you know what I mean.

I think you should fight the desire to not "just send a card" I seriously just wish parents didn't have an overwhelming desire to send home more junk with my kid. They usually get 4-5 "goodie" bags full of the same plastic crap they hand out at birthday parties for Valentines Day. Add to that the numerous pencils, bubbles attached to the cards - what's the point? Last year my son needed a full sized grocery bag to lug all of it home (and his class only has 15 kids in it!) And for the record, he didn't even look in the bag once we got home - a few days later I chucked the whole thing.
