I bought a few things one being the art masking fluid that was full price @$15 and the ranger Kraft paper protector thing which was $17 , some Martha Stewart paints & a few vday items for my daughters gift! Before using my coupons the total was $53 I used the %25 off entire purchases and the % 40 off an item! My new total was $39 at first I was like gee that's really cheap.. But I didn't think anything of it, I thought maybe something was on sale.. Then after my coupons I was like wow that's great! So it was bugging me ever since I left the store..
I finally decided to look at my receipt and the cashier forgot to ring up the $17 Kraft paper.. She even placed it in the bag & all! I know it's not good on her end that this has happened & if I would have noticed it while I was at the store I most defiantly would have said something as I always do .. But I can't help but be excited I got something for free.. Especially since it was the pricey item that I have been hesitant to buy for a while now because of the price, but I decided today to just get it because I kinda need to protect my work area & cutting mat! So glad I did how many times has someone forgot to ring up your items & you have gotten them for free??!! |

Never that I have noticed at a craft store, but several times at the grocery store, however I can not live with myself, so I take the upc or the item back with me when I go the next time and have them ring it up.

you have gotten them for free
Really? Is that what you are teaching your children? I have come home and found an item/items not rung up. I put them by the door and take them back the first chance I get.
Depending on the store, sometimes the mgr will say "don't worry about it," others will ring the item up so I can pay.
It's only free if it's given freely. What if you were that employee? |

I'm not hand slapping the OP. But I (and this is really just me) couldn't use something if I knew and didn't at least try to pay for it.
But it sounds like you got a few other good deals! |

That's never happened to me. Of course, it's up to you, but like the previous posters, I don't think I would be able to just keep it, even if I had already left the store. If it's worth anything, when I worked retail, I gave a customer about $0.05 extra in change by accident and spent the rest of the day freaking out that I would get in trouble with my manager for my mistake. What if that employee is at home tonight stressing out because her mistake cost her store $17? That's the thought that would put me back at the counter tomorrow, paying for my item. |

I used to work for Target Corporation back in the day before they went all evil....
one of the top executives (I mean good million dollars after bonus) said in a meeting
"you can't expect much from an hourly employee".
Michael's has a computer register and inventory system---human errors happen. I am confident the person at the checkout, had NO idea it happened and is resting comfortably this evening.
You peeps here are crazy in the head with your hand slaps. Yes, I just slapped your face because that is where it leaves a mark. LOL, I just made that line up...I might use that going forward because hand slapping has always been a funny term to me, being raised Catholic and all. |

Just Lizzy, really?
Come on y'all, It's not like she murdered someone on the way to her car while leaving the store.
There's a difference between someone's drawer being short and something never being rung up. The latter is usually calculated as shrink (or that company's term for shrink) when they do inventory. The cashier probably has no idea, as 1sassyPea said.
As for me, odds are I would never have noticed. I rarely look at receipts later. I probably would call later or the next day if I did notice and see if they wanted to charge me over the phone. Maybe you could try that, OP? It'd save you the trouble of going back if its a long drive or something. |

I don't normally stress out if I find an item that hasn't been rung up exactly like it should have been. Normally this happens at the grocery store where I'm over/under charged all the time. It comes out in the wash. A $17 item though? I couldn't in good conscience keep and use it. I would call the store and ask if they could ring me up over the phone via credit card. Most stores would probably just shrug and not care, but on something that expensive I would need to make the effort.

The way I look at it, if I had been charged twice, or for something I had not bought, I would go back to the store, so if the mistake is in my favour, why would I not do the same thing?
The store will put it down to shrinkage, which is mostly shop lifting or damaged goods, and, as it will hit their bottom line, have to look at how to recoup the profit some other way, such as putting up prices or not offering discounts in the future. So while it may be a saving for you now, it may not be in the long term.
So ask yourself "if they had double charged me what would I have done" and that is what you should do when not being charged. |

If I noticed it at the store I would have said something, but if I got home and noticed it I wouldn't have gone back to pay for it. I'm not about to drive all the way back to correct their mistake.
Then again, there's little chance I'd have missed it at the store. I watch the register very closely to make sure everything rings up correctly. Had I noticed that something didn't ring up I'd have spoken up immediately.

The next time I was in the store I would ask for the manager and offer to pay for it.
This is what I would do. But I would probably also take a coupon with me so that I could still get it for less than the full price. My conscience would be clear, and I would still get a deal, even if it weren't as good as getting it free.
I have taken things back and paid for them when they got missed. And as someone else said, the manager is usually stunned. I've had one manager be so pleased that he refused to let me pay for it, so then I got it free and kept my conscience clear, too.
It's kind of fun to shock them, actually. It also makes their day. Totally worth it to me even though I don't get it for free. |

I am a true believer that nothing in life is free. I also believe that in some way or another you will pay triple for a wrong. I know it sounds silly but I know I would call the store and ask if I could speak with the manager and pay over the phone for it or go back to the store. It is a $17.00 item, not something that I would feel comfortable even using if I did not at least try to pay for it. Hand slap....no, I wouldn't even think of doing that this is just how I would handle it if it was me.

Sorry people but I too have gone back into a store to pay for something that wasn't wrung up.
I agree with Just Lizzy - I actually took my children back into Walmart to pay for a movie that was missed. Of course the workers there had no idea how to handle the situation.
Yea the OP didn't murder someone but coming onto a MB and bragging about not paying for something is a little OTT. |

Not a score, a STEAL....
I try to monitor scanning as it occurs, question the total if it seems too high or low, &/or, at least, review the receipt before leaving. If I'm in a hurry, distracted, or simply overlooked something, I return to or call the store & speak to a manager once I discover the error (whether in the store's favor or mine).
My suggestion is to contact the store manager. Otherwise, you are keeping something you KNOW you didn't pay for, regardless your intentions.

If noticed in the store or even in the parking lot - I would not be able to live with not going back and paying for it. That is just for me though - I believe in karma and wouldnt want those vibes out there.
If I realized it when I got home - I wouldnt go back. I live to darn far from the store. I dont think I would be able to use whatever it is without being constantly reminded how I got it.

First of all can i just say WOW! Everyone's acting like i stool the damm thing!!! I'm not the one that made the mistake firstly and secondly if you read my post.. I stated that IF I HAD NOTICED THE MISTAKE AT THE STORE THEN I WOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING! I don't feel like I'm wrong in any of this, I'm not the one that made the mistake & I didn't even notice it until later last night! I have been over charged sooooooooo many times in a store its not even funny, I have even been screwed out of correct change from a purchase I believe $20 once & I don't see the store or the cashiers hunting me down to correct there mistakes they have made with me!!! I have worked in retail, as a cashier and so on years ago and have made mistakes.. Rung up the wrong amount, was short on my drawer & NEVER once did I get in trouble or fired for it .. Because we are only human and mistakes are expected! There also has been plenty of times where there is a cashier that didn't ring something up right in front of me.. Or my daughter had candy in her hand that I forgot to pay for and I get all the way to the car before realizing it & turn around and go back to make good on it! If I'm already home I don't feel like I should have to drive 20 minutes back to the store to correct a mistake that I never made to begin with, if I was still there then yes of course I would say something! 40 minutes in total of driving equals $$$ in gas and my time.. In the end that $17 could have turned into $30! For something I didn't do.. I feel bad she made the mistake, but I'm pretty sure she didn't even know she did it .. Noar is she stressing about it!
And to the comment about " teaching my children" what are you teaching YOUR children about bashing people or there kids on a message board!!!!! |

A packet of thickers? A roll of Recollections washi tape? That's not a big a deal and I'm sure any of us would have pointed that out if we'd noticed at the store but not been too worried about it if we'd gotten home and noticed it. But that's really pricey and your "deal" will be considered a loss just like if someone had shoplifted it.
So it's okay as long as the price isn't real high?? So please please tell me where the cut off is so I know I'm okay to keep something if it's under that amount.

Can i just remind everyone that I did NOT STEAL THE ITEM! Everyone is acting as if I stool a money from a poor person! Really? So over 30 post on the thread and you all are so honest & perfect? So it's my mistake then? Not the cashiers? Everyone can say what they want on a message board that's easy.. I am NEW here and I'm not gonna hold back on a thread I wanna create! THINK WHAT YOU WHAT OF ME.. But bottom line is I didn't make the mistake I didn't notice untill I got home which was too late for me to say anything about it in my mind, every time I have been over charged or double items in my receipt even the time i got screwed with my $20 I DIDNT go back to the store because I was already home & it was too late in my opinion.. So as far as "karma" goes maybe just maybe this is my good karma for all the times I have been screwed by a cashiers mistake and lost out in money I never spoke up about! As crazy as that sounds! I'm not one of those people who go back to the store after being charged wrong or whatever else I just eat it.. Mostly because i live I a rural area and it would cost me more money and time that I don't have, and there has been a few times in the very beginning I have called the store , went back and they treat you as if it was your mistake you made not the cashiers!!! & as far as being able to "watch" everything get rung up that's almost impossible for me since I have an active 2 year old that doesn't ever like to sit still!
AGAIN.. I just wanna stress the point that I did NOT steal anything.. And if I had walked out of the store and had gotten to my car and noticed i would have turned right around and payed for me .. Whether it would me be or my daughter having something in her hands ..which has happened before and I walked right back in the store to pay for it!!!

I live in a rural area too. The closest M's or J's to me is 25 minutes away. In your shoes, I too would not drive back there. It would not be worth the gas money. But I would call. After that call, I would feel like you did in your original post.

OP, don't let anyone make you feel bad. This happens ALL THE TIME on the Two Peas board. I think a lot of Peas enjoy the bashing.
I'm not so sure that I would have driven 40 miles to return something if it was their mistake. Especially with a 2 year old in tow! |

I definitely would not have driven back! |

Whether or not you can keep the item in good conscience is up to you but I'm not sure that I would be posting about a "score" for everyone else to judge.

I wouldn't have driven back either but the next time I was in I'd ask to speak to the manager about it.
This happened to my brother at Christmas time. He received $40 worth of merchandise. He didn't have time to go back until the middle of January and when he did the manager just told him to keep it and thanked him for his honesty.
Me, I've gone back into store and said such-and-such was missed. The reactions I've gotten have ranged from not even a thank you to "I just can't believe someone would come back and do this, thank you for your honesty!" I'll admit that sometimes the reactions of the people working are disappointing.

Thanks! Yeah I have a very active, inpatient 2 year old .. And sometimes its not easy doing the simple things! There has been times where I have gotten all the way out to the car put her in her car seat, put all the bags away and found something in my cart that wasn't paid for.. I then take her back out of the car seat and walk back in the store and pay for it.. When in my option most people would just drive away at that point because of the hassle! Just like the hassle it would be to go back to the store to correct a mistake the cashier made.. Or what a hassle it would be for me to go back to the store if I was charged incorrectly for something or got screwed on a purchase!!!!!! Which seems to happen to me more often then not!!! I can HONESTLY say this is the first time I have gotten home and realized the cashier didn't ring it up! Every time I'm have always caught it at the register or at my car and have ALWAYS made good on it! So do the math compared to numerous of times I have lost out on money due to the cashiers mistakes and me never doing anything about it because I'm already home!!! & as I stated before I don't see the cashier or the store chasing me down or going out of there way to correct the mistakes they made charging me double or not the correct price.. Or forgetting my change that's owned to me.. |

I've done things that I felt uneasy about before, but I'm human. I wanted the item enough to justify and keep it. I've also had things I should have taken back to the store because they overcharged me, and I was too lazy to go back.
So it goes both ways.
And I'm willing to bet most of us have done this. The reason Peas are handslapping you, however, is because they have a filter that keeps them from bragging about things that are on the iffy side of the ethical line. If you'd said it's hard to get back to the store, what would you do? the group would weigh in differently. But calling it a score says you either don't care that most people think its wrong or you can't see why most people think it's wrong.
That's why you are having a less-than-easy time on this thread.

Apparently some people haven't learned the rules yet - the details in a story are important and how you tell the story.
There's a difference in your OP and saying.... I was distracted at the store and didn't catch it until later that night and I live 40 miles away, so it's not like it's just down the street.
Do you know they actually use a question like this on job ethic tests? Something like if you lived 20 miles from a store and found out you were not charged for a $1 item, would you go back and return it? I don't know what the 'right' answer is. I think the questions on those tests are too b/w and life isn't like that. |

I agree with Julie.
The original post looked like you were bragging about it, rather than asking what others would have done. I think a thread where you had given the details and asked others for their thoughts on what to do would have got a much different response. It looked more like 'look what I have got away with, have you gotten away with anything similar?' |

May i stress the point that I'm NEW here so I'm so sorry if I haven't learn the correct message board "rules of posting" as far as I'm concerned no where on the twopeas rule board does it violate the rules of a thread on the contents of my post! With that said looking back at my original post .. Yes, maybe I could have worded things differently.. Because calling it a "score" might not have been the best word to use! But if you where to read my entire post and not just the subject line.. You would see that I clearly stated that I felt guilty and that if I would have noticed it at the register then I would have spoke up about it! I don't feel bad or feel like I should have to delete this post to make others happy!
Julie I do see your point & your absolutely correct about the way my post was stated.. Bottom line it all means the same!
When i stated in my post about "has this ever happened to you, what have you gotten for free? " I wasn't implying anything but a similar situation if this has happened to you and what have you done about it! I don't feel like I have to defind my self for my actions or my words that I have used in my post.. But I do think its amusing what some people will post and the nerve they have to say the things they say to others without conscience! I guess if I wanted to hide behind my computer screen bashing other people for there human mistakes or mishaps of words then I guess I could.. But when I post things, comment on a thread or put my two cents into it .. I'm not gonna bash someone or be nasty just because I'm not face to face with them i still give them my honest opinion in a respectable way..I carry the words treat others how you wanna be treated.. Whether its on a message board or in person!

Jennifer, as you stay longer at 2 peas, you will quickly see that we have these debates about right and wrong regularly.
Some that come to mind:
Store won't let kid use the bathroom
Store took my 40% off coupon for clearance merchandise
(whatever) rung up at the wrong price, so I went back and got 50 more (whatevers)...
Should I get free refills in the drivethru...
Those are few I can think of from recently. Don't let it get you down,
It gets debated for a few days, then all blows over, and we are returned to our regularly scheduled "pea-ing"...
until the next time!

Guzismom..
I just took another look at my receipt and it says on the bottom that my 25% coupon was only used towards $26 of my purchase.. I'm guessing because some of the items I bought where on sale and the coupon was for full price items! Also there was a few other things that I had bought that I didn't mention On my post for the sake of typing every single detail!
& what I find to be ironic Is I just went over it again since yesterday and realized that the 1 item I purchased was on sale for $1.99 and I was charged $2.99 for it! So what do the peas make of that huh?
My point exactly as i sad before..I was overcharged AGAIN like I always am and can never really do much about it unless I wanna drive to the stores back and forth every day of my life.. So as long as I'm the one getting ripped off nobody has anything negative to say, but the ONE & ONLY time I end up with a "free" item by utter mistake I'm the worset person in the world! The way I see it.. I'm just got back a tiny tiny portion of my money that I have lost so many dam times over the years from the cashiers mistakes! |

Serenitysmom..
oh, I know! I believe the very first post that I ever made on this message board was a HUGE debate! I believe over 4 pages lol.. All because I was new and didn't understand why people abbravted every word.. Mostly because I was getting annoyed that I couldn't read anything lol.. That was a good one it went from that to bi language speaking, to lazy Americans to in correct spelling & so on lol... You would think being new with a first post like that i would have ran for the hills! Lol I guess that's what my though skin gets me.. I just felt the need to further justify and clarify my original post! I said what I needed to say.. On to the next subject! |

I always laugh when people talk about "the rules" for posting at 2Peas.
First of all, we all know they're not really "rules." They're just things that long-time posters and readers like to see from other people when they are posting. It just makes things easier. But it's not like you'll be banned if you don't do it. (I swear, some newer posters are given the impression that they "can't" post here unless they follow all "The Rules."
You're "supposed to" include every tiny little detail about everything and you'd darn well better do it in your FIRST post, not a subsequent post.
Funny thing is, not all of us are perfect enough to anticipate exactly which details are going to be relevant to the story they are telling. I just got my hand slapped on the NSBR because I included a details after-the-fact, only because someone asked a specific question, which I then answered. Then I get the typical response, "Well THAT would have been helpful from the beginning!!!"
You can't win for losing around here!!! LOL!!
