16 years old, diagnosed in September with testicular cancer. From the day they found to the following week the cancer spread at an alarming rate. They removed one testicle and harvested sperm before the first round of chemo to give him a chance at having kids one day since the chemo would pretty much destroy what chances he might have had. The original prognosis was EXCELLENT. Surgery, then chemo that they said this type of cancer is highly reactive to. Scary as hell, but we were all comforted by the prognosis.
The cancer has continued to spread despite 12 weeks of chemo between the surgery in Sept and Christmas - it is in both lungs, liver, both kidney and his lymph nodes. His doctors decided they could not adequately treat him anymore and he's been moved to Indian where Dr. Einhorn (the leading testicular cancer doctor - the guy who treated Armstrong) is currently treating him. He had a central line put in today and they are harvesting his stem cells and platelets today so they can transplant them back to him after this next round of MONSTER chemo. Dr. Einhorn has said there is about a 25% chance of survival. If this chemo doesn't work, he can't have the surgery to remove the largest tumors that are growing so quickly.

His poor mom (my sister in law and dear friend) is barely holding together. She's a single mom and was released from her job Friday because she's missed so much work since Sept (she had FMLA but it's run out now - however, they've guaranteed her a job once he is well and she can work again). Fortunately her son is covered on his Dad's insurance and that's not an issue, but now SHE has no insurance because she has no job and therefore no way to pay COBRA. I'm just so sad for her - she is dealing with this nightmare with her son, no income at all, now having to live in another state for at least the next 6 weeks. Someone put on a fundraiser last week to raise funds to help with out of pocket costs and travel expenses and that was an awesome help and such a blessing.
Cancer just sucks and I needed to vent. I'm in GA and can't be there to help her and that sucks too.

Sure does put my petty little grievances (most of which, right now, are directly related to my own 16 year old son) in perspective.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I can't begin to imagine...

TC is dreadful and is alarmingly common in young men and boys. My cousin is also being treated by Armstongs doctors and is also going through nearly leathal chemo to try and beat this. TC is so freakin' aggressive.

I will pray for your nephew. My cousin has three young children and a lovely wife. He is not yet 30.

It took something this awful for me to finally get on the band wagon about self exams for both TC and Breast Cancer. Both treatable with many good results if caught early.

How horribly scary. I'm sorry you are all dealing with this. But don't give up! They've given him 25% and I have a couple friends who have survived cancer with less odds than that! Science is amazing and it CAN happen!!

Thanks for all the support!
Kristen - ITA agree, I get so worked up about the stuff in my life that I think is so massive, then I get a call from her with the latest bad news and it really puts life in perspective. My kids are healthy and I thank God for that.
He is a BIG kid, BUT he's lost 100lbs already. It's just so stinking sad and so unfair.

And I know people who have come back from worse odds too, so we are still really trying to be positive. Cancer's just been a beast for us the last few years. Just in DH's family we lost his sister (at 31) to melanoma, his uncle to brain cancer, and his aunt as well (her cancer was so far spread they didn't even know where it started - she lived one week from diagnosis). They all died within a month of each other in '09.
We're just all a little shell shocked I guess. It's never easy to deal with, but dealing with it in a kid is just so...I don't know. Unthinkable.
Thank you again for all the kind comments and prayers.

Genny

I wish him and all your family the best. Please do not cling to tightly to percentages. No doctor can predict the future as all cases are different.

My husband was diagnosed with lymphoma in August. We were also told great prognosis. Basically, do tv worry this is easily cured with chemo. Well after 6 rounds of chemo the tumor did not respond. He is currently going through the "monster" chemo as you described to get himself ready to undergo a stem cell transplant as well. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I will keep him in my prayers.

I'm so very sorry!

A good friend of mine recently had to raise money quickly for surgery for her newborn son... She lives outside the states and they wouldn't schedule it until they had the funds. She set up a site through Indiegogo and was able to raise over $11K in about three weeks. Perhaps something like that would work for her.

Having people spread the word via social media makes a big difference... It's one thing to donate to an anonymous person, but completely different to donate to your friend's nephew, or your neighbor's cousin, etc.
