Does your company offer donated leave time? If someone needs to take extended leave, they can request people to donate sick days. Have you benefitted from this? Have you donated time? Do you have a certain criteria for donating time?
Nana 's supervisor requested people to donate time. She is eligible for 6 months off on FMLA
I spoke with her HR today and found out that out of 95 days she is allowed to receive, she has 86 days donated! That's 17 weeks, over 4 months' time of fully paid salary and just as importantly, health benefits. When I called and gave her the good news, she cried.
I am amazed at the generosity of he coworkers. |

Yes, we can... and yes, I have.
We have restrictions (you have to have "so many" hours saved up and can give up to "x" hours - I don't recall the amounts), but we have a way to contribute "catastrophic care" to fellow teachers and classified staff members.

Yes, you can donate leave to persons who need it. I work for one branch of HHS, so HR sends out an email to the entire body of HHS when an employee needs leave. I have not donated time because I always need it.
We can also borrow leave--up to 240 hours. You can pay it back with the leave that you accrue (sick time). I borrowed leave for my surgery in 2008. It is painfully slow to pay it back though, but I am very very grateful that this was available.

We have a leave donation program, but we can only donate our annual leave, not our sick leave. We have far more employees who need it than are able to donate.
I once gave a very close coworker half of a day (4 hours). That is about $100 worth of leave. I felt that was very generous. I use my leave and do not donate even when the request tugs at my heart.

I work for county government and yes, we have a program like that. HR will send out an e-mail that an employee needs X amount of hours of sick leave donated. They attach the forms for you to fill out and e-mail back if you wish to donate. The only stipulation is that you have to have I think 250 hours balance AFTER your donation. I've donated several times.
I've been with the county 20 years and earn sick leave at 14 hours per month. I rarely take a sick day, so I've got quite a stock pile. |

We have donated time, it's called FEFE (for employees, from employees). If an employee is going to be out of work for an extended period of time HR will send an email asking if anyone wants to donate time. No names or specifics are disclosed. It can be used for the employee or the care of a family member - basically anything that qualifies for FMLA (with the exception of childbirth without extenuating circumstances).
Employees can donated any type of time off - sick days, vacation days or personal days. The only restriction is that you cannot donate more than half of the time you have available.
The recipient must first use any time they have available. I believe the maximum that they can receive is somewhere between 30-60 days.
We have over 300 employees and the need has been great in the past two years. I have donated time, but have never had to request any.
It is a great program and I am proud that my employer offers it. Knowing that someone who is dealing with surgery, cancer or other terrible illness can get a bit of financial piece of mind is heartwarming.

Where I worked we could donate sick days. Notices went out to everyone. I had donated anywhere for 1 to 5 days, and there was an employee who I told I would give him 5 more if he ran out of days.

The federal government has excellent policies about donating leave. You can't donate sick leave but you can donate annual leave. After a certain point (I forget the exact number) annual leave is a "use or lose it" thing. So better to donate it than to lose it. My dh just donated 80 hours.

Yes we do have a donation program. We have Combined-time off (CTO time) hours that we bank and can donate from that as long as you have at least 40 hours in your bank. Our CTO time includes our sick, vacation, and holiday hours.
Yes I have donated to co-workers that have needed it.

We have a sick leave bank - you have to participate to benefit. I don't recall what the requirements are (you have to have a certain amount of leave time in order to participate) - we donate one day per year.
When I worked for a hospital, we could donate our time however we wanted - sometimes we would organize leave time donations instead of a baby shower. |

We hav a sick bank in my school district. It hasn't been used lots, but for those who need it, it can be a huge deal. Donating some sick leave is an easy way to help out someone, and most everyone has been glad to help out when it's needed.

My coworkers donated hours to me when my DD was diagnosed with leukemia and went thru chemo and a bone marrow transplant. Other than prayers , there could not have been a greater gift. I carry our health benefits and the hours paid for that and allowed me to care for her 24/7. She later relapsed and had to have another transplant and they continued to donate - not full time hours but enough for us to make it. I could never thank them enough.

In my district you can donate days to a specific person, but certified (teachers) can only donate to other certified and classified (paras, secretatires, health clerks...) to classified. I don't see why they don't at least let the certified donate to classified as we make more.
We also have a sick leave bank that you donate one day to and then have access if needed. I didn't opt in because you can only use the sick bank if it is you who is sick or injured, family members don't count. Once the sick bank drops below X hours, all those enrolled must donate a day.
The district must save quite a bit of money that way. |

We have a sick leave donation. In order to be a recipient you have to first be a donor. There is a designated time each fall to donate leave. We can donate anywhere from one hour on up the only "catch" is our own leave time has to remain at/above 80 hours once the donation is withdrawn from our balance.
If I have 85 hours of sick leave I can donate 5 hours. It encourages people to use sick time wisely and not be taking it off for everything. |

I work for local government and we can donate vacation time only. There are some guidelines: the recipient has to have exhausted all of their available leave time and it has to be for their own personal illness, not that of a family member.

We can donate. I have never received or needed donated time, thank goodness.
I have donated time to others (usually 3 days at a time). I usually read to find out why they need the leave (since our company is big I usually don't know then) and based on their illness and length of time they will be out, I will decide if I want to donate. |

We have a sick leave bank at work that I am currently utilizing. You choose to be a member and donate a day when you are hired. Every time the bank drops below 1000 days, everyone donates another day.
With my colon surgery and chemo this year, I am going to require 50ish days out of work. I had 40, so I put in for the sick bank.
It is a blessing to know that even with all the other crap going on, I am not going to have to worry about my paycheck being affected.

I worked in HR for many years and have never come across this. But then, I always worked in the public sector, where our leave was really generous. (30 days annual leave, plus 12 days public holidays, and 6 months sick leave on full pay and then another 6 months on half pay. This was after five years' service.)
It's a good idea and people's generosity is heartwarming.

I decided to take three weeks off and then I asked that the rest of the days that were donated to me be returned to the giver for them to give to someone else. It really made me feel good that so many people cared and wanted to help. |

The desk job I work for doesn't do this. They aren't exactly the smartest when it comes to this kind of kindness to their employees. Even if they did, there would only be two people in the entire building that I'd even consider donating time to. I have no interest in the rest. Several of us went to ask if we could donate our sick or even vacation time to her so she would get paid and they said no. She ended up going a month without pay. I think it's sad they wouldn't let us do it.

People wanted to help you enough that your company actually created a policy? That's one of those times where I think the good feelings generated can mean more than the actual gift.

My employer offers it which is really nice. I have never had to use it though. You can donate sick or vacation time as long as you have 80 hours left over after the donation.
I have a coworker who is battling a mental illness currently and she ran out of time pretty quickly. One of her direct coworkers donated 300 hours of sick time to her so that she could take off the amount of time she needed to get proper inpatient treatment. It was the nicest thing I have ever seen!

In 2004, I required brain surgery to remove a tumor. At the time I was single, making $11/hour and didn't have two nickels to rub together. Thanks to the amazingly wonderful people I worked with at the time, I was able to use all of my vacation time and have another 4 weeks of paid time off to recover.
I miss those people to this day. I have no idea what I would have done without their generosity.
My current employer allows us to donate time. I usually have a couple of days left every year that I don't use and I always donate them.

That's a really nice practice. My company doesn't have anything like that. We have a mother & daughter working here and the daughter has some personal issues that required more time than she has so her mother was able to transfer her vacation days to the daughter. There's no pool or request for people to donate time.

Yes, when I worked for Horizon Air, we could do that. We also had a 'fund' and had 'fundraisers' to donate to it so that employees with severe financial occurances could be benefitted.
At Walmart we had fundraisers for employees facing financial difficulties (out of town expense with a sick child) but could not donate our vacation time.

Yes but it is my understanding that you can't specifically request who the days go to. It goes in a bank and a committee decides who is deserving.
