The end of November Emily tested positive for influenza A. She had a tough 3 days but gradually got better and about a week later she was back to herself. Since that time about every 3 weeks she has a fever of about 101. Usually only lasts about a day and is often accompanied with leg pain. She is also pale quite frequently.

I will also add the leg pain is not something new. She has complained of leg pain for a few years. Her pediatrician has seen her and said her joints were hot so that usually means it isn't growing pains but the lab work was conflicting...not elevated like is usually seen with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis but a little higher than normal. I will probably ask about this again tomorrow.

She will be seeing her pediatrician tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone has any ideas of what is going on and if there are questions I should ask that I am not thinking of. Does it just take over 3 months to fully shake influenza?

******UPDATE******
She tested positive for influenza B. Her pediatrician is concerned about her ongoing symptoms and wants to do bloodwork. However, he wants to get this cleared up first. We go back on the 28th for him to look into what else may be going on.

I wouldn't think so!

I would press her doctor pretty hard because leukemia pops into my mind with the fever and leg pain! I would certainly ask for complete blood work up.

I'm sorry to scare you...I truly mean no harm, but I would investigate this until I got an answer

No worries...my mind has already gone there. I plan on pressing for complete bloodwork being done. Fortunately her pediatrician errors on the side of caution and sometimes overtests. I am okay with that.

I am trying to put everything together tonight because once I get into the room I tend to draw a blank on everything I planned on asking and telling.

(((hugs))) It is unnerving when your child is sick. I hope you get answers soon.

I don't have any ideas but wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you. Hugs!
Please be sure and update after you see the doctor tomorrow. I'll say a prayer for Emily tonight.

Hugs to you and your girl. Not everyone with RA or JRA has abnormal labwork. My labs have been normal for over 20 years. I would ask for a referral to a pediatric rheumatologist. Rheumys treat more than RA/JRA. The inflammed joints would concern me greatly.

My three children have juvenile idiopathic arthritis (no longer called jra) and those are all the symptoms
Blood work does not always show it, sometimes not till much later on and when joint damage is done . A pediatric rheumatologist will also order X-rays of the joints and even MRI. The thought my son had leukemia also so I was expecting that he was diagnosed at four he could no longer walk. My other children were 15 and 10 when they were diagnosed. A blood test to ask for is the Hla b27 gene that will also give some clues

Like Pridemom, I have seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis. Some things show up in my bloodwork, but nothing that points to RA, just shows I have inflammation thru my body.

X-Rays only picked up the Osteo Arthritis I also have. It took am MRI to see the RA damage.

What concerning to me, I've read of many instances of Flu requiring anti-biotics being the trigger that sets off RA. We're pretty sure my bout with Trigeminal Neuralgia (which included anti-biotics) was what got my RA rolling.

I spike fevers, don't know anyone with an inflammatory arthritis that doesn't.

I'd keep pushing for answers. Testing is getting better for RA, but a large portion of those diagnosed are seronegative.
I would get her to a Rheumatologist. Hot joints & even slightly elevated bloodwork should be enough to get a referral.

Thank you everyone for you input and btdt perspective. I will definitely keep all of this in mind tomorrow. When the bloodwork was done last time they did check for leukemia and that came back okay.

I felt her knee joint tonight and it is noticeably warmer than the rest of her leg.
