I thought I wanted a really big party. It wasn't a good year for that for several reasons, and what I ended up with was a week of smaller celebrations. My dh and I went to dinner. My mil and I went to lunch. My dil and I went to lunch. My mother and I went to lunch and a museum. I had a lunch with several friends. And a week later, I visited my sister out of state and she took me out for a verrrry nice dinner.
And you know what? I loved all of that so much more than if I'd had a big party. |

I will be 40 in October, and I want a celebration. Not necessarily a party but I want a big deal made of it!
We keep adult birthdays low key around here. My dh always gets an ice cream cake for me and sometimes we will go out to dinner but not always. He gets a gift and a card for me and makes sure the kids have something as well.
I don't need a party, but Id like to go out to dinner, have a cake, balloons, decorations....I want dh to make a big deal of it. |

We had a party in the backyard - open house style. I loved that so many people from different facets of my life came and visited. One thing that was very important to me was to take a photo with each and every person who was there - I love those photos and to have those memories. |

A nice dinner out with my husband.
I had no desire for a big party. None. I had been to 30th and 40th and 50th parties, and invariably a couple of years later people are saying "oh, yeah, Dana, she had her 40th - what was it, 3, 4, 5 years ago?" (it was usually 2). I didn't care to have people having a hazy memory of me being somewhere north of the milestone birthday.  |

I have a few years to think about it. My dh and I are 7 months apart, so whatever we decide to do we'll celebrate our birthdays at the same time. Maybe one big party for family and friends, or a vacation for the two of us. |

Funny you ask! We are inviting friends to join us in Galveston, TX to rent a beach house for 2 nights/3 days. I can't wait!!!!!! (I'll be at LEAST 35 lbs lighter by then, too! Down 25 so far.  ) |

Two of my close friends pitched in and bought me a trip (with them) to San Antonio. It's not like I was dying to go THERE but one friend lives here (Chicago) and one lived about 8 hrs away from SA so could drive and meet us.
One of my oldest friends lived in Austin at the time and she drive over with her family and I had never met them. She has always lived thousands of miles away so we see each other only very rarely. It was just great to have all my friends together for the day.

This doesn't really apply since it's your sister but - my trip was about 10 days before the actual day. ON the day the man in my life took me where I wanted to go (this odd little museum I'd always wanted to check out, and then a tour of the historic district). We took lots of pictures, went to Butch's (famous bar on Rush St) for drinks. He made me dinner, bought me a cake and the rest of the evening... was all about me *ahem*

My dh turns 40 later this year & I've convinced him that a trip to Vegas is a good way to celebrate.
I still have a couple of years to go, but I'm hoping for a getaway trip for my 40th as well. I'll probably let dh decide where, though, since I chose Vegas for him.

I threw myself a party with all my girlfriends. I invited them over for a bbq and slumber party. It was a ton of fun, and we stayed up until 3 am chatting and giggling. Best.Birthday.Ever.
I don't really care about presents, they are just things, but time with people who love me was a pretty awesome gift.

DH was in Maryland for his 40th, and his colleagues took him to a Washington Nationals baseball game. They also took him to Hooters, and the staff made him stand on a table and sang to him 
My 40th, I got an iPhone as my present. Then I went out for coffee and cake with 2 friends - my only stipulation was that I wanted my coffee served in a ceramic and not cardboard cup I'm easy pleased  |

My DH is a horrible planner and a worse gift giver.
On my 40th- my expectations were low, but I did hope for something to make the day special. Something that required thought or effort, in the smallest way.
What I got was 'So what do you want to do? Want to go out or should I get take-out?' No gifts....because he figured I'd pick up whatever I wanted.
I felt horrible. Really- just horrible. I left the house and walked around a mall for a couple of hours, just to get out. Then I cried all the way home...and called it a day.
I'd like to tell you he learned something from the experience- but he did not. He's still horrible about gifts and planning. But we've been married 25 years, he's a good husband and dad -and I figure I won in the bigger picture. It doesn't make occasions sting less (you'd think I'd get used to it) - but there you go. | |

My birthday almost always falls the week of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. We and the dogs took off in the RV and spent a few days there. One of my best birthdays!
But, that doesn't work for most people but the idea is, take off for a destination birthday if it is just going to be the two of you or and the kids too. |

My 40th birthday was last August. I had a party at my parents house so more of my family could attend. I also thought since I survived kidney cancer last year that it was also another good reason to celebrate. |

For years I had thought that I would have a big 80s themed party for my 40th, seeing that my friends and I were all teenagers in the 80s. But the closer it got to my birthday the lazier I became, and in the end I just couldn't be bothered. I ended up just having friends and family over to our house for a BBQ. I wish I'd had the party, maybe I'll do it for my 50th instead.

What I wanted was a little party with my husband and sons at home, like usual, except I did not want to plan it as usual (I always just bought a frozen cake, ice cream, and candles) and I told them that.
What I got? Nothing. They'd forgotten about it.

I wanted to have all (most) of the people who were important to me all in one room at one time. I threw myself a big party. My BFF has a large house so she let me have it there. I had it catered. I invited old friends, new friends, work friends, dog park friends, and some cousins. I had an absolute blast. It was the best birthday I've ever had. |

I wanted to go to Italy but went on a cruise instead. It was a blessing in surprise because my husband lost his job 4 days before we left. The cruise was already paid for so we went and had a wonderful time.
I did get to go to Italy 3 years later with my mom. |

My sister and her hubby were nice enough to throw me a party. I knew it about it ... not a surprise ... but I WAS surprised by the people that she sought out to invite and who came!!
I guess, luckily for a change, my birthday is right before Christmas, so even some of my ReallyOld friends who had moved out of state were "home" for the holidays and were able to come to the party.
I've never cried in front of people ... that night I was bawling with joy.
It's hard, sometimes, to be single and "know" that you don't have a SO to throw parties or do special things for you. I am thankful for my sister. 
Anyway, surprise or not, I'd recommend having OLD and NEW friends join you for a celebration.

For my 40th, I invited 40 female friends to come over for a champagne brunch. It was the best party I have ever had. Brunch was served buffet style, but we had a chef whipping up omelets and keeping all the serving trays full. There was also a couple of drop dead gorgeous waiters, in their tuxedos, serving champagne and mimosas to the ladies. It was definitely a good time, and made me feel like 40 wasn't going to be as bad as I thought. | |

I had a brunch at a nice restaurant on the beach with my close girlfriends and dinner at a very nice restaurant with DH and DD. I am over waiting for DH to find me the right gift so I ordered myself a new camera

On my 40th, my DH invited my friends to a surprise dinner at a restaurant. He also surprised me with tickets to Hawaii. We had a great time. |

I attended my S/O's company Christmas party. It was a quiet, sit-down dinner kind of thing, and actually pretty fun. (My 40th fell in the middle of the week this past December.) That Saturday night, though, we stopped in town and had our first portrait taken together, then headed out to a homestead village for a candlelight dinner with Dickens carolers, carriage rides, etc. It was perfect. |

Dh and I both turn 40 this year. His birthday is in April, and his parents are flying in to surprise him.
Of course, when I asked if he wanted a party, he said no there was an event going on that weekend that is tied to his main hobby, and all of the people he'd invite would be at the event. Then he proceeds to tell me he wants to spend much of his actual birthday at said event. I was like  . Of course I'm thinking Now what am I going to do with your parents who are flying in (unbeknownst to him of course) to see him on his birthday.
So, I suspect dinner out with his parents for his. For mine, I'd love to travel but our finances are so tight I'm going to be lucky to get a card. | |

An epic trip, awesome gifts from my DH, gathering of family and friends, but on a smaller scale and a promotion I had been working very hard towards. The committee did not give it to me for my birthday, but I found out the morning of my birthday!
I did not want a big 'blow out' party.
I did end up being taken out to lunch or dinner virtually every night that week (my birthday was on a Monday and we celebrate from Sunday to the next Sunday basically). I was really glad to have the mini-celebrations with various circles of friends (one with close family and neighbors, book club, Bunco, scrap buddies, etc) instead of inviting everyone I got to really enjoy time with smaller groups and got to hit all my favorite restaurants with my favorite people. I think the biggest one had 18 people and the small scale was perfect!

Oh sues I am sorry. But I'd like to tell you that being a good husband is soooooo much more important.
Yes I had a wonderful birthday and I will cherish those memories -- but the man who gave it to me was a TERRIBLE BOYFRIEND. He was great at these grand romantic gestures and crap at everything important.
My brother is one of those guys who never celebrates, never remembers birthdays, never cares and it used to bug me (I always remember his!) but when I am stranded and I need him to come fix my car, or I need someone to come help paint the living room, or take my dog for a couple months bc I am in a cast, he is there, 100%. |

I loved my 40th
My husband organized all of it - he's awesome.
We went downtown (just the big city we live near) and got a room. When we entered, it was filled with balloons and flowers from my closest friends telling us to have a great time.
My husband told me at 6pm I had an appt at the hotel salon. I didn't - just as I was about to head down to the salon there was a knock at the door and it was my 3 best girlfriends (and their husbands). They did my make-up and hair for our night out. We drank and got silly in the room, and went to an amazing italian restaurant for dinner.
After, we went to a fabulous nightclub. I NEVER did the nightclub thing - even in my youth. We were VIP and sat in a velvet rope area. They brought out a bottle of vodka with sparklers lit and made a huge spectacle as it was carried through the club
I danced the night away with my husband and friends. At the end of the night, I learned that VIP meant you didn't have to leave when the club closed. LOL. We stayed more and had a blast. When we left, there was a Hummer limo waiting to take us. We went to some all night pizza placed - downed pizza and gourmet cupcakes. Then we went back to the hotel and crashed - all of our friends had rooms there.
It was one of the best nights of my life. My husband really planned the perfect night. I felt like (an aging) rock star! | |
