Aw, thanks, Evie! You are too sweet.
No layout this week, unfortunately (it's still laying out on my desk), but maybe I'll pop an extra in next week.

Thanks for posting this. I've been on the fence about my feelings towards feathers for two reasons: first, I have a son so I wasn't sure how that would fit into his LO's, and second, I really have no clue how to use them in scrapbooking at all. so I'm off to read your blog

Thanks for posting this! I've purchased a few feathers lately (they're so pretty!!) and I haven't figured out how to use them to do them justice.

I'm looking forward to reading all of those!!

Well written articles but, unfortunately, I have an aversion to feathers. In middle school biology, we collected items to look at under the microscope. EVERY single feather had lice. I can't even see fake feathers without remembering that lesson!

Fantastic installment, Ashley. I love feathers.

I recently did a 6 page layout of a visit to a farm. There were chickens at the farm and lots of them. My pages really needed something in the embellishment layering. Then I remembered the feathers I bought on clearance years ago. Awesome! My pages totally came together in a beautiful way.

There are some absolutely gorgeous feathers. My question is, are the feathers in the stores real feathers or fake feathers? I wouldn't want to put real feathers in my scrapbook, but would not be opposed to using fake feathers.

Maybe I will win and then I can play with feathers to my heart's content
I would also like to know if some of the scrapbook feathers are real or all fake? If there is a way to clean and safely use real feathers I am in luck. My friend has many different exotic looking chickens and Im sure she would share!

Since 'real' feathers can be washed I would think cleaning them would not be that hard.
I have washed feather pillows in my washing machine with soap and a touch of bleach and they fluff up just fine

Great articles on feathers, Ashley. I think I'll try some hand made ones today. I love real feathers: they are so beautiful...

There is an awesome feather project on Nicol Magouirk's blog. I stumbled across it last night when I was checking out the Valentine's pages she's done.

Thanks, everyone!!

dreamsbedreams, I didn't address boy layouts specifically yet, but I can see how using the right colours and styles of feathers could totally work for a boy layout. Something bold and chunky, maybe with brighter blues, reds, tans, would be a great match for photos of little boys playing outside.

I can't even see fake feathers without remembering that lesson!
manomo, I can totally understand that!!

My pages totally came together in a beautiful way.
I bet! Sounds like a perfect combo, Paisleys Garden.

My question is, are the feathers in the stores real feathers or fake feathers? I wouldn't want to put real feathers in my scrapbook, but would not be opposed to using fake feathers.
Besty, I think pretty much all of the typical feathery-looking feathers you see are real feathers. However, there are currently tonnes of feather embelllishments out there now that are just printed images or cut paper. I've even seen some cool pheasant-looking feathers in the silk flower section of Michael's.
I can understand scrappers being concerned about putting biological materials in their scrapbooks. If it is of any encouragement or comfort to anyone concerned over this, I have a small handmade "scrapbook" that my great-grandmother made for my mom's cousins when they were children. She went on vacation to the beach and kept a journal with trinkets, photos, and journalling to give to them when she returned from holiday. She stuck a seagull feather through one of the pages, and now, nearly 60-70 years later, the feather still looks totally fine. No decomposition. No wanted "friends" hanging out with it.

If there is a way to clean and safely use real feathers I am in luck.
I'm sure there is a way to clean them! I confess that I have used real feathers found outside and just stuck them into my journal without worrying about it.

but I still hate feathers...
LOL, thanks for giving me a chance though, Marilyn!

Yes! And how amazing would those little babies look now, all covered in glitter. Ooooh...
