So many achievements this past week.
Good luck to those racing today. Be sure to report back and let us know how it went.
Maps, you're in all our prayers. Crossing my fingers for good news.

In order to make my miles this week.... I did my first 6.2mile run yesterday. It felt great, almost like I could have kept going, but I figured it was already going to be a shock to my system, so I didn't push it.

So, for those of you that have run a half, a full, or are currently training for one... what made you decide to do it? I feel like after yesterday, a half might really be possible.

Only 2.5 miles today. I am doing the Hal Higidorn 1/2 training plan, and I'm on the taper day for the the long run. Next Sunday it's 6.5.

This will be my 3rd half. DH and I are doing it together. He supported me through running (and injuries) all last year, and decided he wanted to see what all the fuss was about. We are really enjoying the process of it all and spending time together that is such a benefit for our future as well. I walked/ran my first last May, and then ran my second in October, finishing 41 minutes faster! It's the greatest feeling crossing that finish line for such a distance.

Kayak- a half is totally doable. I walked/jogged my first last May, after never doing more than 4 miles at a time. There are lots of resources online with training plans.

I am still resting up my right foot after last week's race. I'm thinking tendonitis over stress fracture, because it doesn't hurt to touch and I ca still walk on it fine.

I did go back to CrossFit Friday and felt slow and awkward. Yesterday, though, I did a WOD at the regular gym and had to chuckle because the big boys were obviously not used to seeing a girl doing kettle bell swings (with the big weights, not the little ones). The looks on their faces were priceless.

I'm planning to run Tuesday or Thursday and see how my foot feels. I have a 10K March 2nd and need to get signed up.

So, for those of you that have run a half, a full, or are currently training for one... what made you decide to do it?

Honestly, doing another half wasn't on my radar AT ALL until November, when a friend of mine signed up. I had completed one before, 9 years ago, and knew I'd do another some day. My friend told me to check it out and sign up to run with her, so I looked up the race. The registration fee was a little steep for my budget just then so I wasn't so sure about it.

No joke, an hour later I went to check the mail and received a check I wasn't expecting to get that was enough to cover the cost of the race. I signed up as soon as I walked back in the door.

I decided to run a half when I saw two of my friends lose a bunch of weight and post pictures on Facebook of them looking all skinny at their race. I thought I want to be able to post pictures like that and be proud of the way I look. I started running in March 2011 and got up to 6 miles. Then I got a stress fracture and had to take 6 weeks off. I started back up again and did my first half in Dec. 2011 weighing 28 pounds less.

I have had my ups and downs with my last 4 races being down. I was really struggling to run a 13 min. pace 6 weeks ago, but I ran my 8th half marathon today and was able to average a 10:50 pace. I didn't get a PR. I finished in 2:20 but that's only 2 min off my best time. I feel good and I'm so happy my pace is going in the right direction again. I will PR in San Diego in June.

I have my 2nd Ragnar on Friday and I can't wait for that. I'm doing it with the same people as last year and we had so much fun in our van.

I went for my fist run in about 3 months yesterday. I kept it to a slow jog and 15 minutes. The physio is trying ti get me to change my footstrike so it was weird concentrating on hiw each foot hit the avement but I had no heel pain today so I'll try it again tomorrow. I'm quite out of shape but it's better than doing nothing..

mmksquared- yea for a great half today!! Getting that pace down is awesome!!! I'm soooo excited for you for Friday. You have to give me all the details. The good, the bad and the ugly!!! Cannot wait for our Ragnar in April!!!!

Kayak- I never could have imagined running a half. My BFF and I planned to run the 5K at Tink and registered for that. She decided to run the half too and I was in the Not a Chance in Hell camp. Weeeellllll, I have terrible insomnia at times. One night I was up in the middle of the night and registered to do it with her. I didn't tell anyone for 3 weeks.... You CAN TOTALLY do it. Register and work toward it!!!

IN all seriousness. If I can do it starting from nothing so can you. I'm not special or talented, just determined and that's really all it takes to do a half marathon.

THIS. Beth called it spot on!!!

I'm a person who does well with a checklist, and I LOVE being able to check off workouts the way the C25K and Hal Higdon Marathon training apps work.

Does anyone know if there is an app like that for core strength exercises? Planks, sit ups, etc?

MMKsquared--congrats on such a good race. It is so nice to see times slowly moving down especially after a long period of struggling to see improvement.

littlefish--I hope your foot is okay later this week. Please keep us posted.

kayak--look out, you'll be running 7, 8 miles before you know it. I'm a firm believer that if you can ramp up to 9 miles 2-3 weeks before a half marathon, you're ready to run most of your 1st half. Just my opinion.

I started running 5K's, then 10K's, then a 15K. Then got the crazy idea to run our local half marathon a few years ago. Ran those for a few years and finally ventured into marathoning about 3 years ago. It has been a very slow progression for me and I'm not a fast runner but I love the sport. Sometimes I think the only reason I run during the week is so that I can easily run long distances on the weekend--those are my favorite runs. 2-4 mile runs are almost always hard for me. It just takes so long to "warm up". But after mile 3-4, it's smooth sailing.

Crazy sounding, I know. But it's the bomb!!! I hope you'll give it some serious consideration--a half that is. You can do it.

And thanks again, once again--words just aren't enough to say how much I appreciate the thoughts and prayers from everyone. Tomorrow 8:30 a.m. is my biopsy. I'll keep you all posted.

Meanwhile, run on

Update: No biopsy today. Tomorrow at 3:30 instead. Fortunately the breast cancer surgeon I'm seeing is a marathoner. So she understands my anxiousness to know something before race day Sunday. She said she will call me Friday before the end of the day with results from the pathology report.

I'm hopeful that all is going to be benign. And that my mind will be relieved while I'm running Cowtown.

Ran 30 minutes today. It'll be my last run until race day because of tomorrow's biopsy. But she says running the race on Sunday will be fine.

Hoping you all had a great day and awesome runs/workouts!

I hope so too, Maps. I can't think of a better way to process the relief than to run through it!

I ran 3 miles. Saw my indoor tri results, 11th on the swim, 18th on the bike and 19th on the run. I've been running 2 1/2 yrs, cycling 1 and swimming 6 weeks, sigh. I'd rather focus on running though even if its not where my natural abilities lie.

Sneak peak for you of part of my tshirt for the race. I designed and made 3 identical costumes including tutu's. The bday girl wants us to wear the costumes on the plane. That should be a sight!LOL

I made tutus for my SIL and me. I have my suitcase packed, but I haven't figured out how to fit the tutu in yet. We have tiaras too.

Ran 3 miles today and I finally figured out why its so tough for me to run 3 but not 6 or more. I really struggle every run until about 2.50 miles and then I get into a groove and I am for the most part ok running. With 3 its like I just started and now stopping. Drives me crazy but I know these short runs are good for the body.

I agree, Candygurl. I didn't enjoy running during C25K and it took awhile to realize I love going longer than 3 because it takes my body nearly that long to warm up.

I'm just taking it easy right now - only running between 3 to 5 miles at a time. The cedar pollen is crazy high right now, so it's giving me the cedar fever. It's mountain bike racing season right now, so I'm dialing back on the running a tad.
I registered for two runs that are coming up in March and April. The one in March is a 4 mile run through the big park here in Houston. The drought did incredible damage, so this is a fundraiser for planting more trees.
I also registered for the Rave Run. It's a 5k night time run that I'm doing with a bunch of friends. Should be fun! The Rave Run

Oh, gosh, you guys are going to have such fun at Princess. So glad to hear you're wearing the tutus on the plane. Live it up!!!

And peaname, I hope you aren't too discouraged with your tri-times. I tried by hand at a series of beginner tri's. Didn't have the courage to follow through on race day. Was sick with anxiety--literally.

Smartypants, the Rave Run looks like a really good time.

Shreveport is finally bringing a color run to town around St Patrick's day. Entry fee is high, but I'm all in for that one.

And Candygurl, I know the frustration of just getting warmed up and then the run is done. It's one of the things I dislike about mid week runs. By 3 miles I'm warmed up and then too soon the run is done! But I've come to know that those short runs during the week are essential for me to be able to run long on the weekend. The long run is my fave of all, doesn't matter if it's 9 miles, 15 miles , whatever. And it's because I slip into some zone where it's just not such a struggle anymore for many of those miles. Weird, I know, but true.

Biopsy of breast today went fine. Stressing about it all day was the worst of it. Tomorrow morning 9 a.m. going for MRI of breast. Then will just be waiting on results. Please keep all the positive thoughts and prayers coming. I believe in the power of prayer. Thanks all for listening. I really appreciate the support.

God bless and, of course, enjoy your workouts, training, living, and wearing tutus

Just got in 3.3 miles and this run marks the beginning of my half marathon training - finally! I hadn't run in over a week and struggled to get my breathing down, but I missed it so much and loved it! Glad to be getting back to my routine.

Got in 3.4 miles on the treadmill and multitasked by playing fetch with the dog during the last half, which kept him from his usual jumping on/off the treadmill the whole time, so we were both happy!

Been getting my miles in. 7kms yesterday and 5.5 today.
Busy getting ready to head back to work after 2 years of mat/family leave. So incredibly grateful for the time, but wow, has it passed quickly.

Hoping I crave my runs as my stress reliever in the evenings.

You're all doing so great.

Candygurl... I can competely relate to the not feeling warmed up until a run is almost over. So frustrating, but I'm hoping it works out as I creep my miles up.

Have funning running Princess runs ladies that are headed to warmer places. So jealous.

I did 5 miles yesterday, the first miles this week. Had some sinus issues over the weekend, so took a couple of days off. A 7 mile run is planned for tomorrow

Maps, sending more prayers and good thoughts your way, I hope your test results go the way you hope. And good luck for you race at the weekend.
Kayak, I am sure you will find a way to get the runs into your new routine. It may take some tweaking, but I know you'll get there

Beth, that t-shirt is adorable! I wish I lived closer to Orlando so I could swing past the airport when you all arrive in your tutus

I'm in marathon taper and going insane with these short distances.

So, for those of you that have run a half, a full, or are currently training for one... what made you decide to do it?

I always joked that after I gave birth, I felt like I could run a marathon, even though I've never been a runner. Pregnancy is always just so hard on my body. So, at the end of my fourth pregnancy, I said, "You know what, I'm actually going to run a marathon." I started at over 220 pounds with the Couch to 5K and ran a half marathon later in the year. I raised almost $500 for a great charity, and just kept on going, and now I'm on track to raise $1,000 for them this year.

I spent the better part of my half in the back of the pack, leapfrogging these ladies in their 70s who powerwalked the entire thing. I figured that if 70+ year old women can go the distance, someone like me in my 30s has no excuse! They were so inspiring to me.

Now I'm more than 60 pounds lighter and going to run my first marathon in less than two weeks and I'm psyched! In the meantime, I've inadvertently inspired a few other people, and will be running a 5K with some of my previously not-runner friends this summer. My DH and I are running his first half together in April, and I'm already signed up for another marathon in the fall!

I'm just another regular person, and if I can do a half (and hopefully, a full marathon), anyone can.

P.S. Isn't there another pea who is running Little Rock?

Thinking good thoughts for you Maps!
Our bad weather wasn't supposed to hit here for a few hours so I decided I could sneak in a run this morning. About half way through it started crazy sleeting, like someone turned on a switch and then thankfully it turned over to snow. The snow was beautiful, just massive flakes and I almost added miles just to be out in it longer. So glad I didn't becase it changed back to sleet and let me tell you, it was like being hit with little daggers! Ouch!
And as to the 'why' of all of this- after running for a while I signed up for a 5k that was for a charity that I liked. Then that distance got easy and I pushed it further and realized I could do a half and then the idea of a marathon got in my head. So if it's in your head I say do it! There is nothing like the feeling when you cross that line and no one got you there but yourself.

Rest day today to get ready for Ragnar tomorrow! I am runner 7 in Van 2. My 1st leg is 7.8 miles. I should start that one around 2:00, then I have a 2.8 middle of the night run, and a 3.5 late Sat. Morning. That one is all uphill. I'm glad I get the longest run done first. Can't wait to sit in a van for 30 hours. I slept for about 30 min. total last year. We had so much fun.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! Thinking of you Maps.

Hi All My Pea Friends,

I received news yesterday that I have invasive ductal breast cancer. Yesterday is a complete blur. Today was better. I'm a bit thrown off my feet but praying I will regain enough equilibrium to run Sunday.

I may step away from the board for a while....I have so little to offer anyone right now by way of support to others. Please continue to pray. Pray for me to be healed, for me to find comfort and protection and peace during this time.

And pray that I remain "present" in the race at Cowtown. Getting into my head and worrying too much about whether I'll need to have a lumpectomy with radiation, a mastectomy or a bilateral mastectomy with or without radiation and/or chemo will get me no where fast. I'm there to race.

So please pray that I stay in the race, there at the race among all the racers, even in those last 6 miles that feel like a wasteland desert.

I'll go back to M.D. for further consult about what is most appropriate options for surgery on Wednesday the 27th.

God bless you all. And race hard this weekend for those who are racing but most importantly, live it up and have a BLAST!!!

Praying for you Maps, for strong legs and a clear mind for your race, and for peace and wisdom for the battle you face when you return.

I've got my credentials to volunteer at the finish of the Disney Princess Half--I'm sure I will see more than my share of tutus! We get to pass out medals this time. I'm excited! Good luck to our pea runners! It's supposed to be hot on Saturday (86) but a bit cooler (upper 70s) on Sunday.

I ran my first 4 miler after my half almost 2 weeks ago. My foot still hurts some but it was more nagging than anything. Pretty sure I know what it is, so I'm working on some calf mobility and will schedule an appt with my podiatrist to make sure my orthotics I have to wear are up to speed. Blah.

I have a 10K in a couple of weeks I need to be ready for!

Maps, I am so sorry to hear your news. I pray that your legs go on autopilot for your race, and your brain doesn't dwell on what is to come. Wishing you strength to fight this devastating disease. You are a marathon runner remember - so if you can do that, then you can do this too. Wishing you peace, and healing xxx Take care x

Map, I'm so sorry to hear your news.

Praying that the race is cathartic, reminds you of how powerful you are and clears your head for the fight to come.

It really puts my worries into perspective.

Ran 7.1 this morning. Didn't feel great, and I walked about a quarter mile around the 5 mile mark. Shall have to see how the legs are tomorrow... Still on the fence about whether to sign up for this 15 K...

Maps----I am so sorry to come on here and see your news. I am praying you have a good race, strong and focused. As others have said you are a marathoner, you are strong and can take on this challenge! I also pray that whatever treatment path you go on, that you are able to persevere and make a full recovery!

I have struggled getting through Week 7 of C25K and decided to purchase new shoes. I ended up with the Mizuno Wave Alchemy. I am a moderate overpronator, so these feel soooo good and made a huge difference in my workouts. I am now on Week 8 and am planning my first few 5Ks for the spring!

Good luck to everyone running this coming weekend! Go Princesses and Rangers!

((hugs to Maps))

Oh Ladies,

Thank you for the outpouring of love and support and prayers. Can't wait to hear how the Princess run goes for you gals. And please, please, please post pics of you each in your tutus!

We are heading to fort worth at 8 a.m. this morning. Race starts at 7 a.m. tomorrow. If any of you wish to track me, my name is Melissa Palmer from Shreveport LA, age 45.

It has been emotional roller coaster these past few days. Last night I wasn't sure I was still going to run. Knew I would be going to Cowtown to support my friends and team that I've coached this season but just been so overwhelmed and emotional.

This morning, I'm still going. If I can't keep it together I may bow out. More than likely I will still line up. As I've said, I'm not much of a quitter.

Three goals this weekend: 1) to have fun no matter what

2) to finish this race even if I become a broken down crying, tearful mess

3) to PR--specifically to run at 2:25 for 13.1 miles; 2:20 for the remaining 13.1

Surely I will achieve goal 1. Hopefully I will achieve goal 2. And it'll be a miracle if i achieve goal 3.

Miracles happen everyday. We just have to believe! This morning I am believing.

God bless you all and I'll be in touch. Melissa

Good luck to you, Melissa. Please don't say you have nothing to offer the board. You are an inspiration to me. I've been sniffling and feeling sorry for myself because I have a sprained knee, but I realize that my aches and pains are minor compared to what others deal with and it makes me push just a little harder. Plus, sometimes it is nice to be supported and lean on others at times like this. You will be amazing in your race, and you will fight this awful disease and come back stronger and better and even more awesome!

And another pulling for you here Melissa
I couldn't agree more with the previous post that your mind and body are strong. Prayers sent, and hoping you enjoy every moment of your race. No doubt it will be emotional.

Been getting my miles in, and have found the run my stress reliever at night. Going back to work has been a shock to my system, as well as to the kids.

I finished my super hilly half today in 2:42.

I thought of you, Maps especially when Melissa Etheridge's I Run For Life came on my iPod. Have a great race tomorrow.

Another miracle believer here! I've seen them happen in my family and know they are real

Did my first 10 mile run on a trail that goes over and under the freeway...quite fun when I was way up high running above the cars Only thing is, I had such a busy day afterwards and am just sitting down and I am so tired! Good thing, there is nothing scheduled for tonight except for netflix and some chocolate

I am trying to get back in shape and I want to do a 5k then a marathon.

The most difficult part is that I broke my ankle and it has taken three years to heal enough to start training, I also developed plantar facitis but thankfully an MT gave me some exercises that seem to be helping. The worst is shin splints. OMG, walking on a treadmill is agony, I have built up to 15 minutes from 4, and I have discovered an elliptical doesn't cause the pain.

Any tips or suggestions?

Praying for you Maps, for strong legs and a clear mind for your race, and for peace and wisdom for the battle you face when you return.

Melissa, I couldn't say it any better. You are in my prayers.

I'm building my distance back up after a pulled hamstring. I ran 2 miles three days this week and 3 miles today. Working on building up for my first half in May.
