I have been modifying Becky Higgins' PL layouts with more options. It's been going great. I've created 2 or 3 of them. Today I wanted to modify them to be square edges instead of round. Great, did that, no problem. But I cannot get the drop shadows to show up. I copy the layer style from a layer where they show, paste the style to the new layer and nothing shows up. It shows up on the layer palete. But if I toddle the view, there isn't a difference.
Is it because the layers are straight edged instead of round cornered?

No, that shouldn't matter, straight or round. So, when you say you were able to resolve making a straight edge instead of round, what, exactly did you do? I'm guessing the answer to the mystery is in that process somewhere, but need a little more information.
The other possibility I can think of is that maybe the shadow is too subtle. Have you tried applying a stronger shadow style to see if that shows? I'd try that.

Thanks for your prompt answer, Liz. I totally agree - that we need a little more info - because at face value it sounds like it should ahve worked fine.

Wait! What happened? I came back and explained, but now it's gone. Let's see if I can remember what I wrote...
I created a new layer and created a rectangle on that layer. That was pretty much it.
I did find a work-around, but would love an easier solution. I create the rectangle as a smart object, apply the effect, then rasterize it. The shadow seems to stay then.

Typically, when you create a new layer with a rectangle, it should already be rasterized. Are you creating it using the shape tool? You don't really need to (although, the shape tool is handy for the rounded corner type of element you were originally working with). If you use the shape tool, you're absolutely correct that you can't apply a drop shadow until the element has been rasterized (simplified).
Try creating your new layer (layer>new), then with the rectangular marquee tool, draw a rectangle, and fill it with a color. That will give you an already rasterized (simplified) rectangle, and you should be able to copy and past the drop shadow style to your new layer without any extra steps. HTH!

Thank you!! That worked and was sooooo much easier than what I was doing.
