Parents' names are David and Dana. They live in a small suburb in Texas. As far as I know it is not a family name.

Poor kid. I would hate to constantly have to explain the pronunciation or spelling of my name. Mind you I do wish my parents had been a bit more adventurous than plain old Sally LOL.

Do they not know how the roman (english) alphabet works?

The T has to come BEFORE the N if they want it to be Christina.

KreszTenia maybe. Or KreszTena. But not Kreszentia (which I would pronounce as cresentia, rhymes with dementia).

Then again, for some reason, GEODUCK clams are pronounced GOOEY duck, so what do I know?

I was going to guess it's a Hungarian name (the sz consonant combination is common there), but after a quick Google, it appears it's a German name.

geoduck is from a nisqually (native american) word..so those writing it down were poor on phonetics...

I'm eye rolling with the rest of you.

Some parents should only be allowed to call their children by a number!

They're not intelligent enough to distinguish between two DIFFERENT names, two DIFFERENT meanings and two DIFFERENT pronounciation

This is ridiculous! Honestly, I'm so over people getting 'creative' with their children's names. 1. It usually doesn't make any sense 2. No one will every be able to pronounce this jumble of letters 3. Have you even remotely considered your child in all of this? It's just plain stupid and selfish. Adding a strange combo of letters won't make your special butterfly unique. It will, however, make it harder for little miss perfect to grow up and get a job.

I'm really starting to think parents should have a list of name that they are required to choose from.

It is a German name, but it is not pronounced "Kristina." It is more like "kret-zentz'-see-ah"

Listen to it here: What Kreszentia Sounds Like

I'm in the camp that thinks if the parents wanted people to say Kristina, they should have named the child that.

How old is the child, My Shelly? I'd probably print out the page Volt provided and encourage her to instruct people to say her name correctly.

I hate when names have no relation to actual phonics.

My friend has three sons who all have {ae} in their names. For the first two sons, that letter combination makes the long a sound - as it should. For the third son, it is pronounced as a short e. WTF?! They wanted the names to all share that letter combination, but ummmmm....those letters don't make that sound!!

But only if I absolutely had to. Most likely I would have asked how to say it. Because a name like that looks like it's going to turn out nothing like I would expect it to be.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The speaker is Austrian so their sound is a bit different from US English. But it sounds something like Kre (half way between e and a) sz (make a sound between a soft s and a hard z) ens-ia. Krea-sz-ens-ee-uh
NOTHING like the way Kristina is pronounced in the US.

So basically, 2 actual given names are being destroyed here. The name those letters actually spell, and the name the parents claim that actually is in their minds.

Nothing like the way Kristina is pronounced in Germany, either! I know 2 or 3 people with that name here - they are all spelled Kristine/Kristina or Christine.

Holy crap! Believe it or not, I would have guessed Kristina as well, but dang, I thought mine was bad and it's Krisstina. I get SO. TIRED. of spelling it out and people still not 'getting' it and spelling it wrong. That's just crazy though! I'd probably change it when I got older...

Yep. I"m wondering if there is a German grandmother named Kreszentia somewhere back in the family tree they want to name the baby after but realize Americans are going to mangle it so they decided to go with Kristina without considering the ramifications of them being two different names.

4. Parents who use "unique" spellings and then roll their eyes and give you attitude when you ask how to pronounce SS's (special snowflake) name. As if you are an illiterate idiot for not "getting it".

I teach Sunday school to 2.5 yo kids so I can't really ask the child and I'm just trying to make sure that I call the kids by the correct name. Pet peeve of mine, I tell ya....
