This was just on my next door neighbor's roof. Isn't he beautiful? Anyone know what kind he is? I couldn't find him in my bird book. Here is a link to the photo in my Flickr account if you want to see it a bit larger. Thanks!

Update:

Got a picture of him this morning. Yes, big difference in weather between the other day and today. LOL! Anyway, 99% sure he is a Red-Shouldered Hawk. So excited to have identified him. Thanks everyone!

Could it be a Cooper's Hawk?

Where are you?

I think it's a juvenile and maybe a red winged or red tailed. I am just guessing though!

I think it's a Cooper's Hawk. I'm guessing the tail is more strongly striped than it looks in your photo. Here's a picture of a Cooper's Hawk (closest I could find to the same angle as yours).

In flight, you can really see the striping on the wings and tail.

I think the tail on a Cooper's Hawk is a bit longer than this one. Hmmm?

And we are in NC. My daughter thought it might be a red-tailed hawk but it would have to be a juvenile.

Another other thoughts?

We have one hanging around also...It's beautiful, but a pest. It kills other birds that come to my feeders. I get to clean up the carnage.

Oooh, just saw the pictures you posted. Maybe it is a Coopers. Looks very similar. My neighbor told me he has seen him flying from our house to the woods beside us. I will keep watch!

Oh no! We have zillions of birds at our feeders. I pray he doesn't bother our beautiful birds here. Is yours a Coopers Hawk?

Smaller birds are the primary diet of Cooper's Hawks, while Red-tailed Hawks mostly eat small mammals. If the hawk is in the vicinity of bird feeders, I'd bet it's a Cooper's Hawk looking for a meal.

Hmm, well, I haven't seen any "carnage" and we do live on a lake with with woods and lots of bunnies, fish, squirrels, mice, etc.

Oh I hate when hawks hang around my yard. They are beautiful but they feed on my birds that hang out at my bird feeders. I have never had to clean up anything because the hawks swoop down grab the bird and fly off. I love when we have an owl hanging out in area because the hawks leave. I know it is all the circle of life but it sure can be icky.

I was going to guess red shouldered hawk as well. What color was the chest?
We had one hanging around eyeballing my little dogs

I showed my DH and he thinks it's a chicken hawk. We have two of them that hang out in our neighbor hood. They go after our birds in our bird feeders, too. We have witnessed it more than once trying it's best to get a bird in the weeping crabapple tree outside our dining room window.

We don't think it's a red-tailed hawk, and the tail seems too long for a Cooper's Hawk (chicken hawk). My dad thinks it might be a Broad Winged Hawk. That looks very similar too. I wish it could just tell me what it was. LOL! I want to mark it in my bird book.

Send the photo to a local university professor in the ornithology department or someone with the State Dept. of Wildlife. They'll help ya!

Looks like a red tail to me. We have a ton of the here and they often munch on pigeons. Kind of gross but also kind of (grossly) awesome to see.
I did a quick Google though and it does look like a red shoulder too. I have never even heard of them.
In semi related news my car almost got hit by a owl tonight when I came home from picking up dinner! THAT was cool to see.

And Paigewh, would love to know what your SIL says too.

A friend has three small dogs -- think poms, mini poodles. Every time she takes them in the backyard to do their business, a pair of redtail hawks show up, flying just over the rooftop. She never lets them go out on their own.

Whatever he is, he's absolutely gorgeous!! I love to see hawks circling around. When my DS's old beater truck was running, he had it parked in my parking place right outside the back door. It had some sort of stand-up hood ornament. One Saturday morning, there was a young red-tail perched on the ornament!! Probably looking for lunch, as we have a bunch of bunnies in the neighborhood!

You sure did! And my parrots are even scared of him. They have been frighted this morning as he is really circling. Need to keep my Papillons in the house. My aunt also told me that a friend of hers that retired from the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources, said when they have checked nests of eagles and hawks they often found dog collars and leashes in the nests. In winter, when it's harder to find fish, the eagles will often take cats, small dogs, groundhogs, etc. Oh my!

We have 2 that hang around here; wish they'd hang out a street over or something. The stuff I've seen them do....

They've snatched baby birds out of our big tree out front, and we could see it carrying a baby bird and the other birds trying to attack it.

One landed on our swingset and ate something; don't know what it was, a bird or mouse, but left quite a mess.

And the best was one landing on our white vinyl fence eating lunch, and we had blood dripped down the fence.

Seriously...do it in our neighbor's yard.
