So I'm spending my weekend decluttering. Yay. I have stacks (big stacks) and filing cabinets filled with SB mags and books. A couple years ago, I went through older mags and just ripped out pages I wanted to keep. My intention was to eventually scan those pages and upload them somewhere like Evernote and pitch the paper pages.
So now I have all the major publications from about 2009-2012.
1. I rarely have time to SB (but I'd like to from time to time)
2. I'm sure that things that I found appealing may have changed over time.
3. I don't really want to take the time to go through them all, and with things like Pinterest, I'm sure I have plenty of inspiration
4. I don't want to pitch them and then regret it.
SO, what would you do? Go through them and keep the pages I like, scan what I like and then throw it away, or just throw it all away without lookingbecause it will feel so good to get rid of it, and I need new inspiration anyway???
Help me decide... Thanks!

I started out going through mine but gave up and tossed them all into the recycle bin. I haven't regretted it so far (it's been a year or so). I also quit buying and subscribing to scrapbook mags and quit buying the books. I find more than enough inspiration online.
If you have the room, seal them up in a box and date it. Put it aside and if you haven't looked in it in 6 mos or a year, pitch it without regret. |

They haven't been in a box, but I know it's been over a year since I've looked at any of them.
eta: I haven't bought a magazine in that time either, and all of my subscriptions lapsed. My newest mag might even my 2011

I think this would be easier if most of the mags hadn't gone under. I feel like I won't be able to replace them.

Toss them. All the ideas in them are available online somewhere, either in the gallery here or somewhere else, or even on Pintrest. You don't need those piles of glossy paper cluttering up your life. Let go and give yourself more room to breathe.
(Disclaimer: I have kept a very few idea books and magazines around. I definitely have kept the three or four I personally had a page published in and one or two other idea books that I found the ideas expressed inspiring, like Stacy Julian's The Big Picture. Whatever you may think of her, that's a great idea book.) |

I don't have a lot but I have torn out the pages I liked and put them in page protectors and then in the report folders with the folding metal fasteners. Those are easy to transport and I like everything on every page. When I use an idea I take the page out and toss it.
I am not a fan of scanning bc I go to crops and I like my ideas to be portable. |

I go through mine and rip out pages I like. I do have some tried and true that have become classic but got rid of 3/4 of them. I do this with all mags and publications regularly. |

Just did this myself!
Recycled mags.
Kept books that were focused on techniques that that book was actually useful to have -- includes patterns, templates, sketches, step by step directions.
All other books (techniques I don't need a book to do, collections of samples/inspirations, contributor galleries, etc.) got donated.
Felt sooo good to get it out of the house!

Been there, done that- and I say recycle them! I have some favorites ripped out and put in a binder, but the only magazines I keep are the last 4 current issues. I tossed probably 50 magazines/idea books once and I have never ever regretted it. If you haven't looked at them in a year, you will likely never miss 'em. |

I had hundreds of SB mags at one time.
My very favorite thing that I still is to cut out any layouts I like and glue them into a composition notebook. (You know, the black and white ones kids use in school?)
Anything with an included sketch has gone into an 8x11 binder in a plastic sleeve. If the sketch was separate, I cut it out and glue it onto the page, and if the back is something I don't want, like an ad, I glue other sketches and layouts over it.
I love love love the composition books I have filled. And.... if I decide I really don't like something any more, I can either rip it off the page, or glue something on top of it.
ETA - Technique tips, or things that don't work in a comp book, go into a binder.

I couldn't bear to part with my memory makers mags and still have some of those, but with most of my others, I went through, scanned things I liked and gave the mags to a local church group who have crafting circles. I also give them any stash I am getting rid of.
I do still have some scrapbook trends as they usually have something every other page that I can draw inspiration from. I don't often buy papers anymore, so these old mags can sometimes help me, as they often feature the paper I still have! |

Two years ago, I was in your shoes. It was ridiculous how many magazines that I had. The elementary school in my neighborhood has one of those bins where they get like a penny for each piece of paper that is recycled. So that is where I took them and haven't looked back since. I also had some idea books that I donated to my local library. They sell used books to raise money. I kept a few back, but frankly, I use Pinterest and YouTube so much now and with my iPad, I don't think I have opened those books in a year, so those may be donated soon as well.
Donate/recycle. You will never regret it. |

i want to say, i used to rip out specific pages and then realized that i never went to them for inspiration and was more likely to go on-line.

Thanks everyone. I know you are all right about getting rid of the mags. I think I'll flip through the newest ones and then get rid of them all. They won't go to waste, I take all of my mags to the library. Most of them have a page or three ripped out so they don't lend them out, but they sell them in their coffee shops.
I have a pile about 1-2' high of stuff I've ripped out of mags over the years too. I used to put them in binders, but then I had three really big binders and I didn't look at them (thus my idea to scan). You've all made me brave enough I might pitch those too.

I say toss...BUT!
Check books out on Amazon first and see if it has an option to sell the book to them.
(for an example, search The Best Of Becky Higgins Sketch Book)They are currently offering $4.50.
I sold that book and one of her sketches books and got over $90 in amazon credit for them. (They were worth a lot more a year ago for some reason)
If you have books they are looking for, you can make some money. You don't even have to pay to ship the book to them.
SWEET!

I went back and evaluated how I "rated" each magazine. If they were "rated" lower, ALL back issued were tossed. If they were rated "higher", all but the latest year were tossed.
I saved "idea" books and annuals.
That was at least a year ago. I still have a significant stack of magazines and the stack of idea books and annuals still exist.
I'm getting ready to go back and cull again.
Before I did the first go round, I checked eBay and Amazon for prices. I checked my local library to see if they wanted donations. I checked other donation sources. The consensus was that the old magazines were worthless to "others"
No -- I have not missed any of them. I hadn't used any of them in a long time -- with all of the other sources of inspiration readily available and search-able, and because of the vast change in style presented getting rid of the magazines has not been a problem for me.

It shouldn't be too hard since there really haven't been many magazines the past few years. I really miss all the magazines!
I always ripped out the page ideas I liked, and put them in page protectors. Then I put them in binders. That has really helped me to stay organized. I also try to go through the binders a lot and get rid of ideas I don't want any more.
It will be so nice to be able to get rid of magazines and have more space! Maybe you could donate them to a senior center.

I ditched all mine in the recycle a few months ago too. I had some that were five years old or more. My style has changed quite a bit from those days, there was nothing in the first few mags that I flicked through that caught my eye. I didn't bother to look through the others!
I find enough inpiration on line now if I'm lost for ideas although I do buy the odd mag now and then.I just like something to look through when I don't have access to a computer.

The most important thing for me was to not use a big hard cover binder for my torn out pages. It's too bulky to look at. I used small report binders and made 5-6 idea books of stuff I liked. Then I can tuck one in my rolling tote for crops and scrapbooking on the go. They are also super easy to flick thru and I don't need a whole table cleared to get it out. |

There is enough stuff online that you get inspiration from that I wouldn't even bother with ripping out and saving pages. Pitch 'em all and cancel subscriptions if you haven't already or throw them away after you've gone through them.
It's pretty darn freeing to have the mindset that you don't need so much stuff.

I sold most of my SB stuff in my garage sale. In the case of old mags, I would donate them to a thrift store. Value Village and Goodwill both sell old mags.

I spent a weekend a few years ago going through all of my SB mags and some of my idea books. I cut out pics of all the layout ideas I really, really loved (don't like the ones with one photo and $40.00 worth of embellishments) and recycled the rest. Did that with a few idea books as well, when I realized I only got the book for those two or three specific layouts.
I kept both of my Creative Companions and the hard back idea books from Close to my Heart and a few others that seem to be "go to's." I used my old blue plastic 3 ring CM binder to put all of these layout ideas in and have my own personalized idea book. It really cleaned out my craft room and I'm glad I did it. The man who lifted the recycle bin probably got a hernia! |
