I would start right away...it took me a few months to find my mojo qnd get things to look decent...so that by the time your LO is one, you can start your binder and it will look good from the start. And you would still have a few weeks, months documented..it cant hurt. You wont regret it.
Yes you can find basics at M's, Target and maybe joannes..good luck

there are TONS of free products (journal cards, title and filler cards) available to print at home or at places like staples, office max, etc. on the internet. I found a lot on pinterest. I would choose a method that works for you...just remember there is no right or wrong way, just your way. I have to remind myself of that when I see all the PL posts/layouts.
good luck and have fun..I know I am.

I am starting today! My son turned 6 today so we are going to do it together, about his life at age 6. He told me he wants his own kit to do, so I am thinking of getting him a mini childhood kit. Yesterday we played with stamps and mists and he had a ball.I am looking forward to doing Project life with him.

I have been debating PL and I just don't know when to jump in. I think the first of the year sounds good so each album has a specific year, but I want to start now.

The childhood kit is perfect and I got 3 for my kids and I might use one for my childhood to knock those pictures out.

Go ahead and start whenever, it is your album, start when you want, take a break when you want, do it 365 days or do it by the month, we won't punish you or send you directly to jail. There is no PL police, LOL.

I'd just go ahead and start today since life is already in progress but, I'm not a stickler for needing a special start date.

If by "basics' you mean a BH core kit and her other branded products, they are only sold through Amazon right now. However, other manufacturers such as WRMK makes divided pages and cards that are sold many places, even Target!

What got me started with PL was the hundreds and hundreds of wedding photos that I knew would take me a decade to put into traditional layouts. Meanwhile, I had other albums I wanted to get working on. So, I gave a try to the PL style and fell in love. When I got over 100 photos into pocket protectors in under an hour, I was hooked. I didn't even have an album, I just bought a single pack of pocket page protectors to give it a try.

I recommend to you to begin with the photos that you currently have, and just get used to the pocket page protector method. Perhaps experiment with a few layouts and journaling to see how you think it would work for you. The initial investment will be low, as you figure out how you want to approach PL for yourself.

I just do a monthly spread (no stress), with the latitude to do more or less. I began there and affirmed it is the right pace for me. Weekly wouldn't work for me. I considered bi-weekly but so far nothing has compelled me to do more than once per month.
