I was watching a You Tube video tour of a scrapper I subscribe too. Their scraproom is VERY organized. Definitely too organized for me, I'd never get anything done with all those drawers to go through to get the embellishments and washi, and whatever else I wanted.
I like things tidy, but not in a ton of sub-catagories.
Not knocking this persons system, I just know it wouldn't work for me.

Not in my house...but then again, even though I am pretty organized, I can put my hands on my stuff quickly and don't usually forget that I have something. Remember, organized doesn't have to mean in a box or drawer; I have a lot of my stuff out and visible even though it is put away in the proper place.

For me, yes. I find I sm much more creative in a state of slight chaos.

I even think the idea of sorting your scraps is a bit strange (sorry to anyone who does that!) because for me, sorting through a box of mixed up papers helps spark all kinds of ideas for combinations I wouldn't otherwise think of. But I know some people would find my system a nightmare and would stress about not being able to find a particular thing they wanted easily.

I think that too organized can wind up the same as too messy--digging & multiple steps to get what you want (it just looks tidier in between).

Would love a link to the vid, if you don't think it would embarrass anybody. I adore scrap room videos, & could use a bit of org inspiration at the moment.

you can never be too organized. i have way too much stuff not to be. i have embellishments in one area, paper in another, etc. let's just say that clutter and me don't play well together.

I'm sure there IS such a thing. I am equally sure I will never reach it!

I agree that a little bit of mixed up stuff helps spark ideas & creativity. I love rifling through my stuff and wandering out of the lines.

OK, I don't consider myself especially organized, but I do have my scraps in file folders in a drawer organized by color. Before I did that, I would never use scraps, because it was too much trouble to find just what I needed. Now, I can use them easily, which is good since i refuse to throw scraps away.

I'm like that.. I have crazy OCD and everything has to be organized a certain way.. Immediately when I'm done using it I put it away even if I know ill need it later on.. Usually I just do that with tools while I'm working not embellishments or papers. I also am a visual person I won't use things if I can't see them, so I have a pegboard to store a lot of my things! I love to organize its like a second hobby for me I can't work if my area is a mess I get very overwhelmed and walk away! It makes me nervous lol my desk and scrap area are always clean! That and I also have a 2 yr old that just loves to touch my stuff!

for me, 'too organized' is just as bad for my creativity as 'not organized at all' would be. I've finally decided to embrace my need for a *bit* of chaos to spark my creativity. I call my organization strategy 'organized rummaging' lol!! I need to see things in order to use them, and having everything shut away in boxes would be stifling to me.

I like *looking* at other people's super-organized crafting spaces; I've just finally realized that mine could never work for me like that.

My scraps are organized by color AND size.

My scraproom is OCD heaven, but I think it all depends on how you work. A lot of people put together a layout by playing with different items....I can totally see how being too organized would be a nightmare, in that case. For me - I can envision the complete layout in my head before I start it. I know I need 7 orange buttons, a 2" scrap of red cardstock, 2 shades of blue pens, you get the idea. It's easier for me to know exactly where to find those items in my scrap space, I get my layouts done a ton faster.

Thanks to Wookiemouse's organization challenge, I am very organized! I really cannot stand having to search for things, it stresses me out. Before I had a dedicated space, lots of my scrapping time was wasted trying to find things in my stash that I knew I had. Now everything has a place, and I can clean up easily after each scrap session, usually in 10 minutes or less.

I love to "rifle through" my stuff so I personally don't like separating things out completely. I have a box of die cuts all jumbled together, for example. I do have my wood veneers separated because they are all the same color and some of those suckers are sharp!

For me categories work better, so my PP scraps are together, colored cardstock scraps are together, neutral scraps are together. Not just for finding things but also for putting stuff away, if I feel like I need a "to file" basket it stops being practical for me. It has to be fast and easy or it is too much work.

But to each their own! My whole house is a disaster so I may not be the one to ask

Edited to add: Wookiemouse that is amazing! If my brain worked that way I could see how much more specific organization would make sense.

I think the level of organization varies from person to person. As much as I love seeing rooms with jars and little tin pails of different embellishments sorted into the smallest grouping possible, I know it wouldn't work for me. I would find it frustrating to have to rifle through all that to find what I need.

Polar,
May I have a link please.

I work in a state of constant chaos. I am currently looking for an idea as to organizing die cuts, bits...etc. I have pile and shoeboxes etc. The only thing I know are organized is my paper ( not my scrap. Full sheets only) and my bottles and adhesive, glitter etc ae together.

Maybe I can get a little organization inspiration!!

I think you can take anything to a negative extreme. So sure, you can be TOO organized.

But everyone is different. One person's too organized may be another's too chaotic. I love to organize. Love baskets, boxes, drawers, etc. I tend to keep like things together sorted by color. So my individual rhinestones are all in a box, sorted ROYGBIV. But my bling words, flourishes, designs are all just in an Iris box. My ribbon is sorted by color in boxes, but all the pink, regardless of type are in one box.

I organize the way I craft. If I think "I need a red button." then all my red buttons are together. If I think "I need some bling." then I keep all bling together regardless of color. So some things are sorted by item type and subsorted by color and some are just by item type. I also tend to keep collections together with paper, embellishments, stickers all in an Iris box.

I cannot create if I have to go hunting for my scissors or glue. Chaos makes my mojo run and hide until I clean up the mess.

My scrapbook room is extremely organized, but I know where everything is. I have 3 of the Making Memories Embellishment Centers and have a lot of my most used tools right in front of me and other frequently used items in drawers next to me. Not a problem for me and I don't have to search for supplies. It's the only way I can scrapbook. I get overwhelmed if it's a mess.

I prefer a healthy dose of chaos I must confess. I love organization as long as it's pretty loose. Ideally (for me) everything has a home that it visits occasionally, unless I use it first!

Some of my favourite pages recently have been made from supplies that were on the floor waiting to be put away. I wouldn't have gone looking for those papers, but when I saw them, I knew what to do with them.

Honestly I don't think you can be too organized... I love organization! But my idea and someone elses are probably different.

My small inks are in a silver bowl that I dig through to find the shade to stamp with.

My buttons are in a mason jar.

My gems are in color drawers.

My scrapbook room is organized and tidy but I need to paw through choices to be creative so sorting my buttons by color would never work for me. Get what I mean?

Everyones brain processes things differently. We gotta go with what works.

Not for me. I am, however, very good at remembering where each and every little thing is. "A place for everything, and everything in its place!" It makes it much easier to find those little things when they are consistently where they belong.

I don't think it's possible to be too organized, by definition. If you were to, say, over-compartmentalize your supplies to where it was difficult to locate what you wanted, then they would no longer be organized.

I do think it is possible to create a system for storing supplies that isn't organized in a way that works for you. For me, it makes me nuts if I can't put my hand on the item I want in less than a minute. Things don't all need to be out where I can see them & they don't all need to be in drawers. They just need to be where I can find them right away.

I don't think so but I think there's a way that you can be organized incorrectly for yourself. You should organize how you scrap and make sure you know where things are. I scrap by color and theme so that's how most of my supplies are organized. For example, I have Christmas stamps in one drawer and red and pink ink in another. But, I have all my embossing supplies separate. I just don't have the room in one drawer to keep every red and pink thing in the same drawer. Nor the room to separate everything. But I do know where my embossing supplies are so if I want to use a red or pink one I can grab it from that particular drawer. My goal this year is to take out more of my other supplies like embossing powders and paints when I'm grabbing my supplies for an layout. I always use ink, stickers, and pens/markers. But less often I take out the other stuff.

There is open storage and closed storage and a combo of each. I think if I had lots of drawers and cabinets I would remember were things were.

I am reorganizing my stamps by theme because I got tired of flipping through all the sets to find a certain flower or heart.

I like to be organized it is really handy to want something red and find it fast.

Plus sometimes I just open drawers waiting for something to jump out!!!!

There are actually some people who can work better in an organize working area. But there are some as well who are comfortable working or staying in a disorganize place. People have different ways. That's it I guess!

As far as the question goes, it's pretty subjective. What would be "too organized" for some, would be "messy" to someone else. Like others said, do what works for you, and i'm sure i've looked at other studios and thought....way too organized for me! Not often though, with ADD, i crave organization, but can always execute it!

I don't think you can be too organized provided you organize to your style of scrapping. I am a rifle through things to figure out what I want -- so my stickers all exist in one container, die cuts in another. Gems are another place, etc. My organization is all about being able to see what I have. If I don't see it, I don't use it. Since embracing that about myself, I find myself using so much more of my stash since it is all visible to me. I would not be someone who could organize much in drawers or behind doors, because I'd forget it was there.

**and I'd love the link as well!**

I would like the link also. I am semi organized. I have all my glue in one draer, embossing powder in another. Like items together.

My best organizational space is my buttons and Tim Holtz metals. I have two shadow boxes that I laid down flat. I keep them on my desk and can rummage through each little slot to find what I want.

I honestly think I was too organized at one point. Every type of item had its own system. Then I would get a new item (such as washi) and that would need a new organizer. Or I would grow out of space when I had 40 compartments for buttons and bought that 41st color. Not to mention getting things out and putting them away! I could find everything right away, but a single layout could involve dozens of items in dozens of places. Button bins, ribbon boxes, sticker files, hanging clips, stamp binders, ink drawers... It was pretty complicated - organized, but complicated!

Went with color & theme bins for embellishments and haven't regretted it for a second. Makes things much easier to tidy up when you can just grab all the orange stuff or all the holiday stuff and dump it in the proper bin.

wookiemouse, It's amazing to me that you can see your finished layout before you even begin.

I'm amazed too!! I usually have a generally idea of my layout but have to touch and move things around for it to come together. And sometimes the end result is nothing like I had envisioned.

As far as being too organized, I think it would hinder me. I need to SEE things to use them. If everything was put away in drawers and cabinets I wouldn't think to use them. I'm not saying all my stuff is thrown about, I do have a system that works for me. I'm organized but not overly organized.
