I was in my LSS today and forgot to ask if they had any. Suffice to say I didn't notice any on my own.

But when did wood veneer get to be so popular?? I admit I've been on a scrapping break for about 6 months ... then I came back here and suddenly it's all I hear about!

Where did the big push come from?

And more importantly, are there any Disney-related wood veneer items?

I think it's been big for quite a while...I thought it had been over six months to be honest. I just hope it becomes a staple that lasts, wouldn't want all my layouts to look super dated because they have veneer.

Wood veneers were already around when I first started scrapbooking last July, but I didn't use my first wood veneer piece until last week!

I think it's just that they are releasing a lot more of it...not just one coordinating pack.
I can't wait to get the latest ones. It takes forever for the new stuff to get to Australia.

I think they were in a kit and went over very well so all the studios jumped in and added their own to the mix. Marketing 101, they are piquing now.

Jennifer, the veneers on that site are all Studio Calico, Prima, Crate Paper, MME, etc. You don't have to order from Germany; you can get them here (when they aren't sold out).

I'd love to know how these things START to become "cool." I mean, M's has had little, wooden carved pieces in their stores forever, & scrappers/crafters are pretty well known to wander the entire store, & the hardware store, to boot.

Is it just that they made them even smaller, in more popular themes, or that some marketing wiz had an epiphany, the design teams showed us all how cute it could look, & we've all gotten on the bandwagon?

I really don't mean this to sound so terribly cynical, but it reminds me of when chicken wire/poultry netting (depending on where you live) was briefly a "thing"--It's been there all along, so who decides it's what we all need to have now?

Oh, & I'm not saying that I'm immune--I bought some of those butterfly & bird veneers today. They ARE cute. But, aren't butterflies & birds cute in general? I'm just wondering why a wooden, reversed cut quote saying, "Awesome!" is more Awesome! than a handwritten one, for example.

Variety; people love variety. Yes, it is marketing that creates the demand.

Someone saw the little wooden pieces in a craft store; they thought it would be cute on a LO. Then someone with scrapping "clout" saw it and thought it was a great idea so they called the manufacturer*, had some specific veneers made, put their name on it, sent them to DTs, and voila--scrapper madness--scrappers see them, and like them, so all the other companies jump on the bandwagon saturating the market. Once all the scrappers who want them have a stockpile, the demand drops to nothing, and the next big thing gets started.

*or the manufacturer already makes the item and the designer calls and wants to market them under their name (TH does this a LOT); all those weird china dolls with broken arms, the little bottles, the charms, the trims, etc... TH is not a designer; he has mad marketing skills--think "limited edition" inks sold in packs of 3. There was never any intention of those being limit editions--it just creates a demand. Packs of 3? People have to buy all 3 even if they just want 1 and they do because they will "never get another chance."

There have been a lot of things like this from where I stand. I took a break for nearly 3 years, and there is not just wood, but banners, more layering, more multi media stuff (which ironically I used to do, and very few people did, now its everywhere lol), chevron and other geometric shapes.

I was wondering when it all came in also.

Australia/Austria

Sweet Potato/Yam

Ummmm. What??? lol!
Australia is nowhere near Austria. Nothing like sweet potato/yam at all.

Australia is in the south pacific in the southern hemisphere near New Zealand and Indonesia. Its a big country, you can't miss it. Its darn near the same size as the mainland US!

Austria is situated in the northern hemisphere, in Europe between Germany and Poland and is a very small country. The other side of the world!

I'm not an archivist by any means, but is anyone concerned about the lignin in these veneers? Acid free and all that?

Nicole - Wood does contain lignin, but lignin in paper will break paper fibers down.

Lignin in wood, on the other hand.. well, look at furniture. It doesn't break down at all really unless its left in the weather.

Acid is responsible for color change and a bit of breakdown in papers.

Wood veneer would be relatively safe in scrapbooking (from what I can find in researching) because wood does not leach any acid unless burned, or chemically processed in such a way to bring it out. This won't happen in a scrapbook

It seems like the wood grain thing started growing in popularity like 5 years ago when Elsie Flannigan would doodle it on stuff. It seems like it sort of blossomed from there. Also - the popularity of mid-century style (which relies heavily on wood grain) is certainly an inspiration to designers.

Helen, I'm pretty sure Paisley was making fun of how (some of us) Americans get lost when it comes to world geography - and that's why she posted with all the smiley faces. Sometimes jokes get "lost in translation" when chatting in an online forum. I'm guessing that as an Aussie living in the US, you've probably run into more than one person who thinks you may be from Europe.

We love our Aussie Peas around here in the Pod just as we love our Austrian Peas too! Although I'm still wondering about those still frozen MinneSNOWtans!

If I was worried about my scrapbooks lasting I know I wouldn't use them in them. My MIL bought an old book off of ebay and it came with a wooden paintbrush and the wood in it totally changed the color of the paper it touched. So thinking it isn't the best idea. I think some of them are really cute though and would use them on a card or project life album.
