anyone have any ideas for a good controversial topic to write an exploratory essay about (anything except gun control), particularly anything psychology-related.

i'm drawing a blank - i've thought of a few things, but... just thought i'd ask the all-knowing peas before i make a decision.

thanks in advance!

If you're looking for psych-related, how 'bout medication and the mentally ill - to force it or not? Or any type of "forced" treatment?

Death penalty

Seat belt laws

Drinking age? -- this one really bothers me. It doesn't stop drinking, it forces it underground. I was on campus in the late 1970's when it went from 18-20, and then to 21 the following year. Vandalism went up considerably as kids were drinking in the dorms. It encouraged more binge drinking, before heading out to frat parties, concerts, etc... Kids can fight for their country, get married, but not drink legally???

helmet laws - strongly in favor that motorcyclist should wear these, the state of NH doesn't agree with me.....

Good luck!

Cathy

this is something that's on my "potential topic" list

or... should kids be given mental health diagnoses when the brain's not fully developed yet.

one I have heard discussed more often recently is sterilization of people with multiple children in the system or multiple times having had their children removed from their care.

Human Trafficking seems to be getting a lot of press lately. I certainly learned new things surrounding the Super Bowl and other such venues.

Or pay your own way prison. I have been learning a little about this. Apparently here in ohio (maybe everywhere?) inmates are charged for each day they are incarcerated. This is in addition to Child Support and other such responsibilities not being suspended while serving the term. So, when you are released you shoulder a burden of whatever you now owe the state for your stay, other responsibilities and then you have a record. It affects the number of repeat offenders and apparently suicide rates.

Another one that's pretty hot right now is housing for sex offenders, and housing for mentally ill persons with a criminal history....they need to live somewhere, but nobody wants them in "their backyard".

Well in terms of something psychology-related - I would suggest exploring a belief or view opposite to one that you hold yourself.

For instance, if you are a Christian - explore why someone would choose to be an Atheist or Agnostic.

Or the reverse.

Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice is also a controversial topic. Perhaps you could explore why people strongly advocate for both sides.

There have been at least two spousal homicides in my area lately. That could be an interesting psychological analysis....

How about the politics around the development of the DSM-5, especially related to Autism (removing Aspergers) and changing the categorization of transgendered people (I think they are getting rid of Gender Identity Disorder?).

The influence of big pharma on how mental illness is diagnosed and treated (pushing pills vs. a more holistic approach).

The Recovery Model vs. The Medical Model

If you're interested in substance abuse, maybe comparing incarceration for nonviolent drug crimes vs. drug court.

Whether or not to medicate children for mental health issues, maybe even dive into some of the "alternative" methods of treatment. Along the same lines as what you and another pea suggested.

Bullying - affects of, what makes a bully, is it just kids being kids, is it natural - animals have pecking orders...

Vaccinations - polio resurgence, unvaccinated children in schools, state vs parental control/choice, HPV vaccine, narcolepsy tied to Swine Flu vaccine that was used in the Nordic countries...

Marriage/fidelity - polyamory, monogamy, one partner now that lifespans have lengthened, cheating men vs women, emotional vs physical affairs, does social media make it easier, are there more cheaters now than in the past, what drives a cheater, can they truly love a partner and be happy yet still driven to cheat and why...

Education -different parenting styles tied to certain education models, boarding schools, home schooling, free schooling, what age, western vs Asian vs Finnish models, goal of education, role of play in learning, ADD or ADHD and how it affects learning/teaching/the classroom...

Another vote for ADD/ADHD and meds. I am a school counselor and talk about it all the time.

Oh, I'm glad you chose that one. I would love to read it. Please share when you are done.

I had another one not mentioned...breast feeding in public and the oversensualization (not a word) of breasts in America.
