Enjoy, I used to think I wanted to do politics, I seriously considered law school, etc. But.... no. It is hard for me to say, because some of my personal and politcal beliefs do not align. Heck, if I tried to articulate a platform it may come out libertarian at this point. LOL

Bunny, this is how I define music therapy: Using music or music-based therapeutic interventions to address non-musical goals. A very simple example of music therapy would be the alphabet song. Setting this random, meaningless string of sounds to music gave it order, an organized structure for your brain to hang onto, and helped you to memorize your alphabet at an early age. The tune made the repetition necessary for such a task much more enjoyable and thus more motivating to do.
An example of music therapy in my current workplace: I work with adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders. Twice a week I meet with them to work in musical combo groups (drum set, bass guitar, keyboard, vocals). This gives them real life practice in a whole plethora of social skills. So if you walked in, you may think you're watching us rehearse a piece of music, like a music class, but in reality, I'm running a group whose sole focus is on improving social skills.
Another example of music therapy in my current school: I also work with K-12 students with a variety of severe disabilities. One of my kindergarteners is very low functioning. For him, it's all about sensory stimulation, providing him with a variety of experiences to further his exploration of and understanding of the world around him. In the same class, a second grader with Down's has need for improved language skills. So we may do an activity where the student has to choose an instrument and interact with it during a song. For the first student, I offer instruments that are very easy to manipulate and have a high sensory output--tactile, visual, or aural. He chooses something, and then gets to explore that instrument during the song. For the second student, I offer instruments I know he enjoys and prefers--motivating things for him--and then he has to use picture cards to construct a sentence to request that particular item, and then read the sentence to us before he gets to play with the instrument.
There are so many different ways to use music with a wide variety of populations. It is a very flexible, enjoyable medium, which makes it a great choice for therapeutic intervention for many different needs and ages. Here' the website for our national organization: http://www.musictherapy.org/
To complete my degree, I had to meet musical and therapeutic competencies. We complete 4 practicums during our degree, then a 6 month ft internship, then sit for our board certification exam. We're also working on state licensure (or have it) in many places. There's a lot of misunderstanding about the field, and many practitioners in other areas that get confused with us, so I LOVE to answer questions about it to help advocate for a better understanding of true music therapy.

AnonPea, yep, I made it! It's a tag I made just messing around. Die cuts, stickers, stamping, rub-ons, sanding, just messing. My mom was going through treatment for breast cancer, and the tag says "it's gonna be ok." And you know what? It is. She's been cancer free for 5 years now.

Sue, primarily music and writing, a little crochet. I loved the visual arts, but had no formal training, and so just loved it all from afar, and made myself happy doing crazily elaborate bulletin boards at the elementary school I worked at. LOL Then I found scrapbooking, and it was like getting to do a bulletin board but in a much more comfortable space and I got to keep it afterwards! LOL Since then I've branched out and done some painting, too.

Beautiful rural areas, love the trees and rolling hills, especially where I grew up in southeast MO.

WingNut,
oooh, too bad she dropped out, but I know of at least one music therapist who went back to school to get a social work degree. (and she had a very good job as an mt, too, one I would love to have!) Sometimes it's hard to find a good fit, but it doesn't surprise me she went from one helping profession to another. Her population sounds very meaningful!
Animal? cats, though mine are curently driving me somewhat crazy alongside a toddler and newborn.
TV show? Hmmm, hard to answer. Enjoy Grey's Anatomy, and Dr. Who, and Downton Abbey, nothing too unique, I guess! LOL Right now I am mowing through Private Practice while I nurse. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but I'm fully immersed in that world. LOL
Movie? What Dreams May Come, or I Shot Andy Warhol. Or Stranger Than Fiction.
I should be answering the multiple question ones with multiple posts, shouldn't I? get more bang for my buck. I'll have to check my post count after this!

I know this is a hotly debated topic on NSBR in the past, and I'm sure I even weighed in, but for the love of Pete, I don't remember my position (no pun intended). I'm trying to picture it, go through the motions, and I just can't... care. LOL!

Favorite genre of music?
Alternative rock. I was an adolescent in the 90s (adolescence is when people typically form the strongest connections to and preferences for music), and I've never moved on. I've also never been a great music major and loved classical above all. It's great, and I do love it, but would always pick alternative if given a choice. All my birth playlists were 75%+ alternative. LOL

Katrina, that is an awesome story about your name! My maiden name rhymed with an unfortunate slang term for body parts... Luckily no one made the connection until I went to college. LOL
The type of music that works best is preferred music. So doing group work can be a challenge, because you have to find music that everyone likes, or at least likes enough that they'll engage with. Matters a lot more when you're working with a resistant population, like my adolescents. They have broad tastes, though, they've requested gospel, rap, hip hop, old school rock, the works. Music preference is an amazing thing. There was a study done about relaxation and music--most places tend to slap on some nature sounds and piano and tell you to relax... But preferred music will best help you relax. This study showed a marked decrease of respiration rate, heart rate, blood pressure--so indicated relaxation--when adolescents who preferred punk music listened to punk music. Screaming, angsty, discordant punk music. Love it.

A sport? Sadly no. I wanted to play volleyball in middle school, but I was already heavily involved in music-y stuff and Mom didn't want to also have to drive me to the practices and games (we lived out in the country). I've always kind of regretted that, wonder if I'd be in better shape now if I'd gotten to pursue that. I enjoy running and walkign and swimming now, all solo stuff.
