Just got a popup on my google reader that it will be going away. Now what do I do? Bookmark each site? Anyone have a suggestion for blog reader? Dang. I just got this thing organized the way I like it.

I know! I'm trying to find another online feed reader but it's so confusing. So my question to the peas is, what will you switch to? Or if you don't use Google Reader, what do you use?

So the top hit on my google search for 'google reader alternatives' is this c|net article: Google Reader is dying, but we have five worthy alternatives

Worth checking those choices out.

I hadn't heard that, and spent quite a bit of time last night clearing out my blogs. I like having one spot to check in on the blogs I follow. If I have to go to each blog individually, I will end up dropping most off of them. Would love to hear suggestions of a replacement reader. Thanks!

Seriously annoyed. I've noticed a lot of my blogs make you click through to their site and a few don't. (Jen, yours doesn't and I love it...well except that spider post )

I hated when a bunch of bloggers freaked out and switched to truncated feeds all in one go. I refuse to do it!

Okay, I downloaded my feeds from Google Reader and imported them into Bloglines. Hate it. It just says "Loading" and won't even update, even though GR is showing some unread feeds. Grrrr.

I'm trying Feedly now, will report back.

There really isn't a good alternative *right now* but that will likely change before Reader actually goes away. This opens up opportunity for developers to come up with something new, so I suspect we will see some new products in this space soon.

I've noticed a lot of my blogs make you click through to their site and a few don't.

When this started happening, I started dropping blogs. The reason I have a reader is because I don't have time to click to each blog. If you're going to make it a chore for me to read, see ya!

There's a petition to get Google to keep Reader. Fingers crossed.

I won't bookmark and visit individual blogs.

When that happens, I drop the blog. I like my blog reading to be simple and in one spot. If you have a post that I enjoy and want to Pin, then I will click through. That's the only time I will.

I read the article and think I'll have to go investigate them.

I hate clicking through, too, but really it's the best way to support the bloggers. They get more money and traffic that way.

I switched to Google Reader years ago from Pageflakes and Yahoo whatever-it-was. I'm annoyed to switch again. But there was some other Google product I was annoyed they got rid of and now I forget what it even was. Google Talk?

I use Google Reader for my security feeds for work, so I'm going to have to find something that works well and doesn't have any annoying ads etc.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, and I'll post my reviews of replacements as I test them out.

I've given up on decorating, crafts, recipes, and the bigger scrapping blogs. Right now I have over 800 unread items. If they get good content, they get noticed and start doing way too much advertising and giveaways. I have better luck with pinterest. I also won't click through to someone's blog if I can't read the content. Way too many out there to bother with.

I do like it for blogs that are geared towards special needs. And Suri's burn book and catalog living keep me laughing.

I have not heard anything about Calendar going away and it would be shocking if it did. That would hobble Android. A smartphone without a built in calendar doesn't make sense.

I read this and then just switched mine over to Feedly and it seems to be OK, slightly different interface will take a little getting used to, but at first glance, I liked the design of it much better. They had instructions on switching over and it was super simple, you can log in with your google login and they'll import the stuff, and it will be there after google reader is shut down.

I had a bunch of stuff "starred" in Google, that I finally took some time and saved into my evernote, it was recipes, book lists etc.

Reader I can deal but Calendar??? I would think that would signal the death if Google beyond search engine.

I use Google on my laptop as my multi family member calendar - and sync to iPhone.

I added FeedBlitz to my blog which is for email subscribers and RSS feeds. I added the code to my blog so that people can hit a button to get emailed updates. However I have no idea how rss works, never used it, don't really understand it. Do I need to add another button to my blog for people to pick it up?

It's not google calendar that's ending but Google SYNC which is what is currently used by most people to sync iphones and ipads. There is an alternative, CalDAV, that works well so shouldn't be a problem. Also I believe if you are already using it, it will continue to work but won't be supported. If you use an app, it too will continue to work.

Then this of their site announcing Reader end of life:

The remaining Google services announced as reaching end-of-life:

Apps Script will be deprecating the GUI Builder and five UiApp widgets. GUI Builder will continue to be available until September 16.
CalDAV API will become available for whitelisted developers, and will be shut down for other developers on September 16.
Google Building Maker to retire on June 1.
Google Cloud Connect to retire on April 30.
Google Voice App for Blackberry ends service "next week."
Search API for Shopping to retire on on September 16.

FeedDemon is populated by google reader so may not work when Reader ends.

Feedly currently is too but I believe they are working on a backend product called Normandy to work around that.

ETA: FeedDemon will also END. This off their support forum today:

This is a hard post for me to write.

I've used FeedDemon every day since I created it back in 2003 - it's part of my daily workflow, the first thing I turn to after pouring myself a cup of coffee in the morning.

I've thoroughly enjoyed working on it and I'm grateful for all of the people who paid for it over the years despite free alternatives.

But it's time for FeedDemon to die.

If you're an avid FeedDemon user, you probably know that I've struggled to keep it updated. FeedDemon stopped "paying the bills" a while ago, so I took a full-time job elsewhere and haven't been able to give FeedDemon the attention it deserves.

Then today came the news that Google Reader is shutting down on July 1. FeedDemon relies on Google Reader for synchronization, and there's no decent alternative (and even if there were, it's doubtful I'd have time to integrate with it, at least not without trading time away from my family - which I won't do).

That was the nail in the coffin for me. I hate to say goodbye to FeedDemon after a decade of working on it, but it's time to say goodbye. When Google Reader shuts down on July 1, FeedDemon will also disappear.

If you're using FeedDemon without Google Reader synchronization, it will continue to work beyond July 1. You can keep using it to read your feeds for years to come. If you're synching FeedDemon with Google Reader, you can disable synching by selecting Tools > Options > Synchronization Options, then switching to the "Accounts" tab and removing your Google account.

I'm truly sad to see FeedDemon go - it's been so much fun working on it, using it, and engaging with other people that use it. For those of you that rely on FeedDemon, thank you for supporting it for so long, and my apologies for not being able to keep it going.

Glad to see that FeedDemon will work without the Google Reader sync, I definitely don't need the sync....that's what I'll be doing!

and if a blog makes me click through to it.....it's off my reader.

Thanks for straightening out what I thought I had read. Now if only I understood how it will effect me. I type in google calendar mostly on the computer then I have it set to sync to my iPhone and my husbands android based phone. I don't use a calendar app, I just use the calendar that was already on my iPhone.

Is there a google calendar app I should be using instead on my iPhone? Wouldn't make a difference to me, I just always liked google calendar because I could get it to two different types of phones.

thanks. Bloglovin looks promising. The only thing so far is that I can't separate blogs into categories (blogs I always comment on, blogs I just read, sewing blogs, etc) but at least I can sort them by blog. That will help.

eta; scratch that. The newer/older buttons don't go in the same order as the sort order. Bummer. I'll keep looking-maybe they'll add folders on bloglovin by July.

nevermind again-I see that I can choose a blog in the drop down. I can heart blogs where I always comment and make sure that I go through those first. I may be unfollowing some blogs in all this.

Yep, I love Reader's next button and know I wouldn't be following nearly as many blogs without it. Certainly wouldn't read any that truncate the rss feed. I like to hit "Next>" and be taken directly to the most recent unread post at the actual site. Guess I'm just lazy that way! Plus, I think using the next button allows the blogger to register a hit.

Between reader going away and my irritation with the growing number of giveaways/sponsored posts - I just might kick my blog-following habit! Should probably find something better to do with my time anyway. (says the woman currently reading the 2Peas NSBR board when she should be cooking dinner so her kids have time to eat it before they leave for soccer practice...)

So I like Google Calendar on my laptop and sync it to the default iPhone calendar on our iPhones. Will that no longer work?

This is exactly what I do and love that i don't need an actual app on my phone to check the calendar. bummer if it no longer will work

The way I understand it is if you are already doing it you'll be OK but it won't be supported. For new users, they will have to use CalDAV.
