I can't decide between fonts and designs or characters. I don't like anything too detailed for they do not seem to cut out right. What do you think?

Both of the close to my heart ones.

Art Philosophy (Close to my Heart) is a great choice. For cuteness and ease of layering I love Create a Critter. (first or second one)Lyrical Letters is a great font cart (not sure if it's retired) but has a several nice fonts on it.

I don't have a clue what else is out there I've missed out on (was not scrapping for nearly 3 years)

Another vote for Close To My Heart Art Philosophy and Artiste cartridges!
They may seem expensive, but they have a ton of designs on each, are very versatile, and are part of a bundle with coordinating stamps and chipboard.

Another vote for the two Close to my Heart ones they have so many more cuts on them than carts and they are ones that I actually use not just cutsy I had to have it one that don't get used. These I feel I have gotten my money's worth from them.

The two cartridges I use almost exclusively are my two Close to my Heart theey have everything you need.

I have to suggest MS cake carts. Depending on the cart you'll get a couple fonts, and a variety of images and borders. Since they are intended to cut fondant the images are fairly simple.
I don't own but have use CTMH carts and they are fantastic!
