Anyone ever used one of those new washing machine cleaners? Ours is getting a funky smell!

Make a mixture of vinegar & water. Dip in a cloth and then rub the inside of the rubber seal. Yes, it will be gross.
You might be using too much detergent. Fabric softener is also a cause of the "smell".
Use less detergent and use vinegar instead of fabric softener when you wash clothes.
A weekly quick wipe (with a vingear cloth) will help keep the smell away. Also, leave the door open after washing so that the washer can dry out.

Leave your washing machine door open when not in use.

Yes I've used the Tide one, it is very strongly scented. I prefer a cup of bleach with the 'tub wash' cycle. |

I just run a Tub Clean cycle (which my front loader has) with hot water and bleach. I've tried the washing machine cleaner, and I don't think it works any better than the cycle with bleach (although it says on the package it does). To keep my washer clean, I've cut way back on the amount of detergent I use, and I now use only powdered detergent. I've also cut way back on fabric softener, and frankly, I don't even notice a difference in the softness of our clothes, and our towels are much more absorbent without it.
Anyone have opinions on disposal cleaners? I just used a Liquid Plumber foaming cleaner, and it seemed to work really well, but is there a "home remedy" that's cheaper?

Mdoc I put ice and lemon peel in my disposal and grind it up to clean. You can also spoon baking soda into it and then add a cup of boiling vinegar. |

I was a cycle with 1 cup of bleach. Also, as stated above, leave your washing machine door open when not in use. This makes a huge difference!

I noticed a smell in my washer today and thought, "I will have to ask the peas what to do about it". Then I come on here and there is the exact question and of course, answers. I love this place!!

Yes. Ours doesn't ever get stinky, but we still clean it every six months or so. I think we used the Tide cleaner from Walmart. Super easy.

My machine recommends that you clean it with Affresh once a month. I do that every month on the 15th plus keep the lid open when not in use (also recommended in my book). Haven't had a problem but granted I have only had it since January. |

Thanks Peas! I bought Affresh and used it twice. Also cleaned all the rubber seals in machine. Looks brand new and no funky smell!

My front loader is over 3 years old and had never had a stinky smell.
We use vinegar in EVERY wash load as the softener.
My clothes don't smell like vinegar, they're super clean too because it takes out any residual detergent, and my washer is always fresh and clean
I buy the giant bottle of white vinegar at Costco for about $3.

How much vinegar do you use in each wash? |

I've had my front loader for several years with no odor issues. In addition to leaving the door ajar and using vinegar in every load (I fill the softener dispenser cup with it), I also switched to Tide HE powdered detergent. Once a week I run a load of laundry with bleach as well. |
