KVUE-ABC.com: Georgia high school to host first integrated prom

WILCOX COUNTY, Ga. --Students at one south Georgia high school share classrooms and sports fields; but, they don't share the same prom.

The school holds one prom for white students and another for students of color.

"We're embarrassed, it's embarrassing, yeah it's kind of embarrassing," said student Stephanie Sinnot.

Stephanie and three other friends say they do everything together, except go to prom.

"We are all friends. That's just kind of not right that we can't go to prom together," said student Keela Bloodworth.

In a world full of color, Wilcox County High School still sees things as black and white.

"There's a white prom and then we have our integrated prom," said Bloodworth.

The girls said if any race other than Caucasian tries to attend the white prom, that student would probably be escorted off the premises by police. That was the case last year when a biracial student was turned away by police.

It’s been that way for as long as anyone can remember; and, it doesn’t stop at prom.

Homecoming is also segregated.

While having two separate dances, the school decided to elect only one pair for Homecoming king and queen for the first time this year.

Quanesha Wallace won.

"I felt like there had to be a change because for me to be a black person and the king to be a white person, I felt like, you know why can't we come together," asked Quanesha Wallace.

But nothing changed. Quanesha wasn’t invited to the white Homecoming dance. In fact, the pair took separate photos for the school yearbook.

"When people around here are set in their ways, they are not too adamant to change," said student Mareshia Rucker.

So the girls decided to take matters into their own hands. They’re organizing a prom for everyone to attend. But, not everyone is fond of the idea.

Some of the posters for the integrated prom that were hung up have been ripped to the ground.

The group will continue to make progress even though there doesn’t seem to be much motivation for change.

The senior class is raising money to pay for the integrated prom, without the help of school officials. It will be held April 27.

The students said the school offered a resolution to permit an integrated prom for all students to attend, but not stop segregated proms.
There are still school functions that are segregated?!??

When I saw a link to this story, I had to check if it was from The Onion.
I still can't believe it's real. Who would stand for that?

I'm always more surprised that people don't know this is still going on. Yes, there are still parts of the United States that are segregated and until people within the community take a stand and say it's not acceptable it will continue to be status quo.

Maybe if all of the students go to the integrated prom this year instead of the segregrated prom they will just have one prom next year.

I read in the comments on the story - so take with a grain of salt - that the proms are NOT official school events but rather private parties. And private parties can invite, or not invite, whoever they wish.

Thus, it's not illegal. Sadly.

Public schools cannot be segregated due to laws, but private proms don't count. Please post links if there are truly segregated public schools, because that is illegal and I lived in the Deep South for years and never saw one. Racism, yes and other forms of segregation, yes, but not public schools.

I'm always more surprised that people don't know this is still going on.

If you'd lived your whole life in parts of the country where it most certainly does not happen, you might also be surprised. (ETA: To be clear, I am only talking about the segregation not happening everywhere. Sadly, there's racism everywhere.)

I think everyone knows that there is still plenty of racism, but blantant segregation is shocking to me (an obviously many others).

I had no clue that this was even an option in 2013. It's wrong and shouldn't be accepted because it's the status quo. It's wrong. Period. No explanation can make it alright or tolerable. These people should be ashamed of themselves and their narrow racist minds.

It might not be a school sponsored prom but the school district is doing nothing to stop it either, shame on them.

When some students asked for one integrated prom, school officials passed a resolution to allow for an integrated prom, but did not implement a school-sponsored prom and did not stop the segregated proms.

Wilcox County School Superintendent Steve Smith told 41 WMGT-TV parents have the right to hold private proms, and did not mention whether or not the school will hold its own prom in the future.

ETA when other people tell you over and over again that certain situations exist, but you insist they don't because those situations are not RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE so you don't HAVE to acknowledge their existence, it can be frustrating to those other people who are trying to make you see the bigger picture.

Well I am certainly not trying to be condescending. But the fact remains that stuff like this does happen and there are many stories about it out there. People do tend to live in their little area and not see what is going on to others. Sorry that you find that condescending.

Here's a blurb from a 2009 article:

Morgan Freeman was disappointed to learn that his local high school in Charleston, Miss., still held separate proms, one for black students, one for white. So he offered to pay for a single prom that both could attend.

That was 1997. It took 11 years for the school to take Freeman up on his offer.

Director Paul Saltzman's "Prom Night in Mississippi," premiering Saturday as part of the world documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival, chronicles the growing pains Charleston went through last year as the community prepared for its first racially integrated senior prom.

School administration FAIL!

So the school still refuses to hold an integrated prom? They are willing to sit back and allow these segregated proms to continue?

I don't know the history of this particular school, but if it is like others in the south that I do know of, it goes something like this:

--Before desegregation, black schools and white schools had their own proms.

--After desegregation, the schools tried to continue having separate proms but eventually lost that legal battle.

--Instead of having an integrated prom, they washed their hands of the issue and had no official prom at all.

--Groups of parents sponsored their own segregated proms, and since it was not "state sponsored", they were legal.

And yet, the school still sponsors a prom "King and Queen" vote? Ridiculous.

If the school administration wanted to put an end to this nonsense, they would simply start having a REAL junior/senior prom that would include all students. You might end up with a few years where there are three proms (the two private ones and the official one), but honestly, the private ones would shrink over time. They need to make the official prom an event that everyone wants to attend, with no yearbook coverage of the other proms and no promotion of the other proms at school.

If the racist fools want to continue to have their own private party, no one could stop them. Eventually, the kids will want to go to the prom that all their friends are going to and the private parties would become irrelevant afterthoughts to the real prom.

No one would expect someone in a different country to know about things like this.

No one would expect someone who's never heard about such a thing to know about it, either.

What we would expect would be if you were told over and over again that such things exist, and yet you were still shocked and amazed for a moment when such a case was shown to you, and then you go on with your life still insisting that such things don't exist ... THEN you could legitimately be considered insular.

It's okay, no one was insulting YOU. We were too busy insulting U.S. conservatives who claim there is no longer any racial discrimination in this country.

The only way to stop private racist events is socially. The students have to put social pressure on those who attend the "whites only" prom. Until no one shows up, it will keep going on. Students have to make it embarrassing to attend.

It's terrible, but I hear racist comments all the time unfortunately. Last week I overheard one that seriously made me drop my jaw, and I'm pretty cynical. Actually, it was an incident up north when we were living there that opened my eyes to all the racism that still goes on.

In most circles, it's socially unacceptable to be openly racist. However, there are tons and tons of people that are closet racists. It's really sad!

How is it condescending when it is the truth?
You imply that people not exposed to this issue are self-centered (a generally negative connotation) when that is far from the truth. When you say people are insular, you are correct - every local geographic has this phenomena...including those who are exposed to this issue and cannot fathom how everyone in the world doesn't know about it.

When you further say "and don't look outside of their little boxes", you imply people are selfishly insular which is an insult as nothing could be further from the truth. As you can see, those of us from other parts of the country are outraged by this. It's ludicrous that this is still going on! But you fault us for not knowing, you insinuate that everyone should know but that is just not how it is and your comments make no allowances for that. You are judgmental of those of us who have no genuine exposure to the topic. That is why you are viewed as condescending.

I don't know why you haven't heard about it, I am not you. But this is certainly not the only segregation I have heard of or seen first hand. There are plenty of stories out there, one only needs to do a google search. I stand by what I said and don't feel it is condescending. If it doesn't affect you (general you) personally, people tend to not search it out.
Why would we do a google search on an issue that for all intents and purposes should be a dead issue? Again, you assume that because you know about this, everyone should.

But it has been in the media, as shown the links I have posted. And yes, I do think that many people in general do care about things if they affect them only. Not all people, not you, but many do. If you choose to take it personally that is on you, not me. I didn't say YOU are insular, just that on general people are. But like Lucy said many political people do try to say that there is no racism or segregation anyone and lots of us have said that isn't true. And here is a story proving that.

Again I was not trying to be condescending to specific people here, just speaking to the general you. Sorry if you felt I was attacking you. It was not my goal.

I agree with both Lucy's stance and Ms Independent's as they've posted above. I totally get being frustrated by people who just refuse to accept actual truth and evidence when shown to them. And saying that not knowing segregation to this extent still occurs in parts of the US is because people are insular, and trapped inside their happy little boxes IS a condescending statement to make.

And I disagree that it is, for some it is the truth. If it isn't for you why be offended? Oh wait because this is 2peas and some have to be offended by every comment even if it wasn't directed to them.

Well, if you make general comments insulting a bunch of people, don't get all pissy that people are insulted by your comment.

But, oh wait. This is 2Peas and everyone thinks they can say what they want and act like it's everyone else's fault if someone is insulted.
