So we talked about why and how we started scrapbooking a couple of weeks ago but I want to know something different now. Here's my question... Why do you scrapbook now?

Things change. The reason why we started may not be the same for why we continue. And with scrapbooking, there is no right way or wrong way. So why are you still scrapbooking?

I scrapbook for me. I do it for the creative outlet. Maybe my kids will want my books, maybe not. They like to look at them, which is awesome, but they are not the reason I make them. I guess some scrapbookers would say my albums are just pretty photo albums and honestly, that is ok by me. I record events and memories in other places. I have photos and journaling on my computer and in photo albums and in personal journals. I don't feel like I need it in my scrapbook pages. I scrapbook because I love the stuff, I love trying paints, I love that I can call it my art. It is not the same reason why I started but it definitely has been what has kept me going with it.

What about you???

I started scrapping in 1998, just after we adopted our kids from Kazakhstan. I wanted to make a "lifebook" for them, and since they each have 5 full albums, I guess I accomplished my goal!

These days, it really is for me. I need it. It's my happy place. Some people will say that excercising keeps them sane? Well, paper crafting keeps me sane.

Since I have two teens who hate having their picture taken (perhaps something about the 5 full albums mentioned above) I do more art journaling or card making, but my true love is still scrapbooking a page. I keep waiting for my addiction to it to wane, but it's just as strong as it ever was.

I too would say I do it for me! The creative outlet is my happy time and the fact that it also leaves behind albums full of stories is a bonus! I hope my kids want the albums, they say they do!

I scrapbook as a creative outlet and to preserve memories.
Same reason I did when I started 43 years ago

I scrapbook for the "me" time. I scrap with a group of ladies(Monday nights usually and once a month Saturday crops). It's good to get together with others who are in the same stage of life, share stories and relax and do something you love at the same time. But I also do it to perserve the memories for my three children. They don't really appreciate it now but when they are older......maybe?

I scrapbook almost exclusively to preserve my photos, memorabilia and stories. This is what I want to leave to my family.

I like knowing that my life, and theirs are recorded in a way that can be enjoyed today, tomorrow, 10 years from now.

I also enjoy doing it, and wouldn't if I didn't, but that is probably only 10% of why I scrapbook.

We talked about how we got started. My "why" then was because it seemed like a better thing to do than just stick them in a photo album. Now, scrapbooking has become much more of an artistic expression, but as one who is about to jump on the PL bandwagon, I think my original reason still holds true, it's just there's two reasons now.

I scrap simply because I just can't NOT do it Did that make sense?

It's only for me. I don't care if anyone someday might want my albums after I'm gone, because it's the creative proces that does it for me.

It's just for me at this point. I like playing with all the pretties. I like that I have a hobby that I don't have to share with anyone. I like that I can do it alone (vs. a hobby of playing a board game or sport where I would need others to join me to do it). I like that I have a hobby. And I like the message boards that come with it. It gives me a place to belong.

I started scrapbooking because I thought there had to be something better than a shoebox.

Now I like going back and reading the stories, especially some of those little things that are quickly forgotten. Those are the gems for me. Life changes so quickly with a constant influx of new experiences. I look through my books and see relationships documented, my kids when they were wee, some details of some adventure we'd been on, or sometimes I just read some journalling and think "Wow. I can't believe we did that. That was crazy pants."

It keeps life in perspective.

I scrapbook for me, too. I'm single and thankfully child-free and have no plans to leave my scrapbooks to anyone when I die. It's my art form, my creative expression and artistic release. I use it to record my life and the lives of my friends and family but also to challenge myself to try new things, to push my comfort zone.

This is a great thought provoking question to which I thought long and hard about the answer.

It really is an effort for me to make time to do anything scrapbook related but I still do at least every once in a while because I truly love creating and pretty paper and my pictures. I do it because when I finish making something - I feel so happy to have made something beautiful. It's something unique I can do that makes me feel artistic. More importantly, it eases my worry that I will never have said the things to my daughter that I want to say if something happens to me.

It's just so many things to me on so many levels that it's hard to put into words why I love it but I do. I love it.

I started scrapbooking as a creative outlet. It still is that for me. But since my grandmother passed away from Alzheimer's I also make a point of more journaling with more stories and details. I hope I will never need to do so but if it happens the albums might serve as a memory aid. Regardless of that the creative outlet is still the number one reason why I continue to scrap. If I ever stop enjoying it I will stop, Alzheimer's or not.

I am married with no children so I scrap for Me. I do it because it is relaxing and I love The and product, something, that I created. It's is a feeling that I have when I finished a quilt or cross stitch. But scrapping is much faster and limitless

I scrapbook because who else is going to show my friends kids their parents drunken nights of debauchery? The looks of shame an embarrassment alone make it worth it.
Oh and I love the creative outlet.

While I scrap for me and to leave family memories in someting nicer than just a regular album - one of the reasons I continue is because I have invested who knows how much money, I don't want it all wasted and not used.

Definitely for me and the creativity. If I don't scrap for a week or so layouts sit in my head and I don't feel "settled" until they come out. My grandchildren and nephews may want them someday, but if they don't that's okay too since I'll be gone and won't know.

Since I have two teens who hate having their picture taken (perhaps something about the 5 full albums mentioned above) I do more art journaling or card making, but my true love is still scrapbooking a page. I keep waiting for my addiction to it to wane, but it's just as strong as it ever was.

You are such an inspiration for me!

I also have two teens: a son who is now an 18 year old college freshman and a daughter who is a 15 year old high school junior. I don't get many photos of my son. (He has hated having photos taken for the past 2 years and now is away at college, so I am not there to force the issue.) My daughter is very busy in cross country and track. I can only scrap so many photos from that before they get repetitious.

I LOVE papercrafting and scrapbooking and I really don't want to give it up. I am trying desperately to find a new outlet for my talents. It is ladies like yourself who have found other venues to express their creativity that I admire the most. I am continuing to try to find my own answer... Only time will determine it, I suppose.

I scrapbook primarily for the creative outlet. I love the process, and the feeling of satisfaction when I finish a layout. The memory keeping aspect started out as a bonus, but the longer I do it, the more I appreciate having things documented that I know I would have otherwise forgotten about. Now that I've done enough scrapping to fill a few albums, I love going through them periodically, and without this hobby I know most (if not all) of those photos would just be sitting on the computer. All of that is what has made me decide to start doing Project Life; I think I'll really appreciate having captured more detail about our everyday life.

I 100% scrap for myself. Terrible, maybe, but true. i scrap because I love taking photos and looking at them and I love the creative outlet. I love the pretty paper, ribbons, buttons, flair etc. I love cutting and gluing, I love looking at my albums (as do the kids and husband, but that is just a benefit, not something I need, if they never looked at them that would be fine). It is purely for me. If the kids want the albums when I die, that is fine, as long as they recycle them if they don't, it is all good!

I started scrapping in 2002 and do it for myself. I'm married, no children, and I have no idea whether any of our nieces or nephews might want my scrapbooks when I pass into the great beyond. It's a good creative outlet, and I've created several scrapbooks that record vacations and other special memories.

I went to a CKC a long time ago and I received a goodie bag at one of the crops. On the outside of it was written, "If tomorrow never comes, they will know how much they were loved."

That is still the number one reason why I scrapbook.

(They may sound a little morbid, but I'm not thinking about death really, but about celebrating life and family.)

I mainly scrap to make money. Yep! It's a thrill that people actually buy my lil' pretties and I can take it to the bank. It was a thrill 13 years ago when I started, and a thrill today. It's kept me home with my 2 boys, gave us vacations, and put food on the table when I first started out.

Yes, my personal scrapbooks suffer, but I decided to just snapfish it all in those awesome online albums. Now I don't have the guilt either.

I started to preserve the memories my husband and I made together. I still do that but more and more I do pages for myself and pages for my stepdaughter of her children or occasionally a mini album for her. I have more time and want to do more pages that I can really do about just the two of us.

I now scrapbook albums for siblings that hit the 50th birthday and I also scrapbook for nephews and nieces when they start a family. It is a great way for me to use all of the photos I have and give them some of the old photos of them in their younger days. I think everyone actually looks forward to a milestone album from me. I will break my boring album stage soon when my first grandchild arrives in a few weeks. I am looking forward to challenge myself not to scrap in my usual collage format. Try and focus on a few photos per page. That will be a big challenge.

I scrap as a creative outlet. I LOVE the supplies - I'm probably more a collector of product than a scrapper. Luckily it is a comparably cheap hobby. I mean I could collect vintage barbies or something LOL. My husband would much prefer to see a package from 2Peas vs Jcrew!!

My DDs do appreciate though and they enjoy seeing the albums from time to time. It's a fun room (my craft room) and they love to be in there - with supervision only! I hate it when they cut up my favorite papers!!!!

I scrapbook for me. Because it makes me feel like an artist and because I can't wait until I'm older to sit down and go through them with my husband. Plus I just love seeing all the pretty stuff in my room. I'm not scared to say I have more than I'll ever use. I'm okay with it, because it makes me very happy.

I definitely scrapbook for me and having a creative outlet, but also as memory keeping and storytelling.
My mom didn't take a lot of photos when I was growing up. I wonder if what "I remember" as a kid is always accurate!!
I want to leave a story and legacy behind with what I create as well.
I am hoping my posterity will think my creations were cool as well as heartfelt!!
Great question!!

I scrapbook for the same reason I read my own blog, or go back through my Facebook timeline. I forget my own life. DH and I have been together twelve years. By year one I could not tell you what our courtship was like. By year five, our early married life was gone. I cannot tell you what our kitten was like. It is all gone, unless I took the time to scrapbook, blog, or Facebook it. I latched on to my own version of PL to tell MYSELF the story of my daily life.

That being said,I have had many times when I have run out of pictures or events to scrapbook. Without the memories I cannot scrap the old stuff. I LOVE colouring and I like to play with paper so stamping and card making revitalized the hobby for me. There is always something to colour even if I am caught up on photos.

I scrapbook for me and for my family. The kids really like the albums and i don't see that changing anytime soon. I love journaling and telling there stories! I love the papers and all the awesome supplies. I get to be creative and tell our stories. My reason hasn't changed in all the years that I have been scrapbooking.

I still scrap for the reason I started: so I don't have to stand next to someone and tell the story that my photos illustrate.

Scrapbooking puts all those stories, memories and random thoughts onto paper often paired with some photos.

Playing with paper and being creative makes it more fun than a diary.

The reasons are actually the same for me.
When I started I was 14 and going through depression and a tough time at school. It's still a therapeutic thing for me ---- I just spend a lot more money on it now!!!

I sometimes wonder though ... whether scrapbook albums will take over my house!

Because one day I'll be at that point where I'm old. The point where it's hard to get out and do things. Eyesight is bad. Reading is harder. Memories begin to fade. I want to be stuck in my room whether it be at home or maybe a nursing home surrounded by my books.

I wish I could say I do it to be creative, but 90% of the time I copy other people or keep my pages very basic. It is a hobby. I don't consider myself to be an artist or some other better sounding title. I'm just a scrapbooker who likes to cut and paste.

Great thread. It made me realize how much my goals have changed.

When I first started scrapping, it was for my kids. All my childhood photos are in a cardboard box in a closet - no dates, no journaling, nothing. Since my mom passed, now there are no stories either. I wanted my kids to be able to remember THEIR childhoods. And, of course, it was a creative outlet for me.

Since I've been doing it for a while now (I started in 1996), I've become a lot more aware of our impact on future generations. I got back into genealogy a while ago and it's amazing how much or little you can know about your ancestors through the things they leave behind. I inherited my grandmother's scrapbooks and they are an enormous treasure. Now, I scrap for the future. I want to document my life and how our daily flow was for others. It's more about the stories now, not the paper and embellishments. I like it because it's a lot more laid back AND I don't spend nearly as much money!

Now I scrapbook for our 4-H club and various charities. Because of 4-H I don't have as much time to scrapbook for myself.

I make mini books to donate, thank your cards for our club and county, scrapbooks to donate, etc.

I started 35 years ago as a teen to save my school memories and include my diary thoughts. I've always done this in one form or another. I don't like just looking at the photos in albums with nothing that tells me the story of the picture. My mom and her siblings/mother always wrote names, places and years on back of photos. My paternal grandmother always did the same and kept photo albums. But my dad's sister passed about 15 years ago and to our greatest surprise she had kept scrapbooks in her early years. I was gifted with those books and learned the aunt I had always known to never HAVE children actually had miscarried a child in her 20s. She wrote her story on sympathy cards from family and stationery. I learned so much about a favorite aunt and will always treasure that book. It's something my sisters & cousins never new existed and her siblings (my dad) never talked about. he said it was so long ago, and their generation never spoke of such things.

For me personally now, it's telling the story with more than photos or making artsy pages. I make gift items, altered projects and things for household decor, sure. But my albums are to chronicle the story of our lives, good and bad, happy and sad. Celerations and memories of all kinds. Yes, we have kids. But my sister who does not, she said she wanted to tell that side of her also. She has nieces and newphew who will inherit those memories. and we also VERY MUCH TREASURE anything in hand writing from our family tree. We're such a digital techno age now that generations fromw now I cringe to think my heritage will be lost on a jump drive or disc. I want words on paper in handwriting, even BAD handwriting, for those generations to refernce. I love my grandma's recipe cards, letters and greeting cards. I even collect old greeting cards to scrap with myself. My children grew up knowing not to toss school programs, event tickets, maps or trinkets. they understand it will all end up on a page or display of some kind.

I like to paper craft gifts for babies, weddings and graduations. Life has so many happy moments to celebrate, why tuck them in some album in the closet.

I love having the photos in my albums and enjoy the challenge of making pages. I'm a full time art teacher, so I am always painting, drawing and doing pottery. This is my hobby, not my vocation, and it's enjoyable to just "do".

Just for fun. I generally only scrapbook at a quarterly crop with a group of friends. If I didn't scrapbook, I wouldn't go to the crops and I wouldn't see my friends.
