Has anyone tried hypnosis to lose weight? There is a session tonight at one of our hotels in town and I was thinking about trying it. It says it will reduce your unwanted cravings and consumption of sweets and break the compulsive/impulsive eating habit. Please share if you know anything. Thanks.

May you always have an understanding angel watching over you.

I am skeptical. If it really worked you would be hearing a lot more about it. I am also wary of those hotel type deals. Why isn't it offered at your local hospital or medical center? That sort of screams shady or scam to me.

I did try hypnosis for nail biting when I was in high school. It worked great as long as I was going twice weekly. As soon as I stopped going, I started biting my nails again.

I remembered watching a piece on a show that talked about losing weight.
They used the Akins diet...something else and hypnosis.

The one doing the hypnosis lost the most weight! The program was $$$ though.

Back in 1978 my three pack a day chain smoking Dad saw a hypnotist to try to quit smoking. He only went one time but came home with a personalized cassette tape that he was to play every time he wanted a cigarette. He would close himself in my parents room and listen privately. Listened practically non-stop for three days and then I don't know if he ever listened to it again. What I remember clearly is that he carried a pack of smokes in his shirt pocket every day for a year - AND NEVER SMOKED AGAIN!

I have just recently wondered about hypnosis for weight loss for myself and based on my dad's experience, I would be willing ot try it, but how does one find a reputable hypnotist?

Yes. But I did not lose any weight or at least, not enough to notice. It works if you are already on a weight loss program and just need help avoiding trigger foods and getting yourself to go to the gym.

BUT yes it did end my cravings for sweets and for fast food. I did not have McDonalds for a year afterwards, and for at least the first month, even the smell of French fries made me want to vomit. I also had more energy and I did exercise more.

The main effect lasts for about a month, which is enough time to help you break bad habits, but it's not a cure all.

I was addicted to Coke and I had a bottle in my car that I had been drinking. When I came out and saw it I immediately started retching and I had to throw it away. There were aisles of the grocery store I had to avoid bc the packaging made me heave.

The main effect lasted for about a month with a very strong aversion the first weeks and then tapering off. So eventually I lost the habit of drinking Coke or eating fast food and that lasted for about a year.

They also gave or sold me a CD with the hypnosis triggers on it that I could listen to if I wanted reinforcement.

I can give you an example of the type of aversion they hypnotize into you, but it's pretty disgusting. I told it to my best friend and she looked like she was going to throw up herself With the hypnosis it doesn't just last the one time. The aversion is planted into your brain and the images that come when you are confronted with one of these triggers and just nasty.

I believe it works. It's ironic that you should ask this. This is my friends blog about what HER experience was with it. Weight Loss Through Hypnosis Blog (sorry you have to hit now for it to take you to the beginning). It is interesting reading about their journeys!

I know a woman who swears hypnosis helped her stop smoking for good. I was skeptical, but it worked for her.

That's where I am with these "travelling" hypnotists.

I mean, what if they plant a trigger for me to write large checks to them on a regular basis?

Or maybe they are preparing an army of overweight housewives that will rise up to take over the world when they give the sign (maybe a giant hamburger in the sky ala the Bat Signal)?

Yes, I probably watch too many B movies on the sci-fi channel LOL!
