When we took dd to the walk in clinic because her ear "felt funny" they cleaned it out using a water pik. I read online that it's not a good idea to use these at home though. So what do you use if your ears need flushing out? I have a bad habit of using q-tips and probably have some blockage in there...

We used an ear wax removal kit from the drugstore on my hubands ears. It came with an ear wax softener and one of those bulb syringes. We used warm water with the syringe. It took quite a while but you would NOT believe the junk that came out of his ears. Gross!!

We use drops made to soften the wax, then flush with a small bulb with warmish water.

Nothing but Q Tips. The thought of ear candling makes me cringe and I don't at all like anything liquid in my ear so those ear washes are out. Ick.

I am a Q tip junkie. And when we are out? It drives me crazy!

I've said it before - you know when you scratch a dogs ears in just the right spot, and their back leg goes crazy? THAT is how the Q tip in the ear is - just the right spot! LOL

My son has a huge ear wax problem! Our dr gave us a syringe made for cleaning out ears, we use wax softening drops (debrox) once a week then use the syringe thing with hydrogen peroxide and warm water once a month. You would not believe the stuff that comes out, it is NASTY.

Qtips all the way-my DH and I call it, "ear sex," LOL.

My kids are both Asian and their ear wax is quite different-not yellow waxy but more in what seems like dead skin. I know this sounds crazy but every now and then I can get tweezers and actually oull it out because it is flaky and does not stick to the sides of their ears like my ear wax would.
Last time I did it I pulled out so much I swear it looked like the skeletal remains of a stink bug! Even my son was shocked by how much was in there! We have used the ear wax remover kit to soften it as well and then the ear syringe.

And when I am in the classroom I am repulsed sometimes when I see a kid with so much ear wax it looks like it is drawn on and oozing out of the kid's ear. Even if you do not use a q-tip all the way in your ear you can still use one on the outside and I don't understand how a parent can not notice it whenI do.

Like a previous poster said, Asian ear wax is different. My DD is Chinese, and we've had to go to the doctor to have the ear wax removed because it was so bad. Our insurance changed last year, and they've started charging us the co-pay and deductible levels for "in-office surgery" because "it's below the surface of the body."

I, too, love my Q-tips. In China, you can get a cheap massage, a cheap foot massage, and they have street vendors who will clean your ears. I am dying to do it. DH says NO EFFING WAY. But I'm totally tempted.

Ok, I'm the weird one. My MIL was a nurse and she always cleaned her kids ears out with a bobby pin or an unfolded paper clip (the small curved end). I clean my own ears out this way and clean my kids and DH (they are too chicken to do it on themselves). Still gives that satisfying feeling without fear of pushing the wax further into the ear.

Random Biology knowledge alert- there are two types of ear wax. This is from Wikipedia:

There are two distinct genetically determined types of earwax: the wet type, which is dominant, and the dry type, which is recessive. While Asians and Native Americans are more likely to have the dry type of cerumen (gray and flaky), African and European people are more likely to have the wet type (honey-brown to dark-brown and moist).[7] Cerumen type has been used by anthropologists to track human migratory patterns, such as those of the Inuit.[8] In Japan, wet-type earwax is more prevalent among the Ainu, in contrast to that country's Yamato majority.[9] The consistency of wet type earwax is due to the higher concentration of lipid and pigment granules (50% lipid) in the substance than the dry type (30% lipid).[4]

The difference in cerumen type has been tracked to a single base change (a single nucleotide polymorphism) in a gene known as "ATP-binding cassette C11 gene".[10] Dry-type individuals are homozygous for adenine whereas wet-type requires at least one guanine. Wet-type earwax is associated with armpit odor, which is increased by sweat production. The researchers conjecture that the reduction in sweat or body odor was beneficial to the ancestors of East Asians and Native Americans who are thought to have lived in cold climates.[11]

My DH thought he was losing his hearing & told the doctor who suggested he use the earwax removal kit someone mentioned in a previous post. He stuck with it for a period of time & eventually he got the crap inside his ears loosened up & it all came out. He said it was the grossest thing he had ever seen. But when he was done he said he was amazed at how much better he can hear! Well no shit! Hard to hear when your ears are so full of crap! I still tease him about it.

Definitely Debrox & the syringe bulb. Q-tips just push the wax in more for me and usually completely plug up my ear so I can't hear. I still have to go to the doctor a few times a year for them to remove it because my ear canals are very small, and they can better see exactly where to hit to remove the blockage.

Here's a couple of good descriptions about possible treatments from the Mayo Clinic site.

I use the Debrox kit I bought at Cvs. It works well. IF it gets too bad I go to the ENT. I produce a lot of wax and my canal is very tiny, so it has a hard time coming out.
NO Q_TIPS!! Worst thing you could do. It packs the wax in there.
