That's amusing seeing as how this week I saw a bum/panhandler/hitch hiker wearing one of their hoodies.

Yep. I get my A&F and Hollister at Value Village. For real. Haha. I don't pay retail to emblazon someone's company logo across my chest. I will pay .39 for their sweatshirt at the Pay by the Pound Goodwill though.

Does anyone else remember how A F started out? I wore the clothes in college and they were considered a very fine line of well made classic clothing. They were similar to Ralph Lauren but had been in business much longer. We mail ordered as well as shopped at the store in Nashville.

My how things change.....

If he wants only young and cool people in his shops, why hasn't he resigned or sold the chain - because he is neither of those things.

What an interesting contrast. I just got home from our church's Mother's Day dinner. The theme was "celebrating you". The speaker talked about how each woman has a purpose, each is beautiful and valued in the eyes of God.

This song was played: More Beautiful You

"More Beautiful You"

Little girl fourteen flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn't straight, her body isn't fake
And she's always felt overweight

Well, little girl fourteen I wish that you could see
That beauty is within your heart
And you were made with such care, your skin, your body and your hair
Are perfect just the way they are

There could never be a more beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguises and hoops, they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you

Little girl twenty one the things that you've already done
Anything to get ahead
And you say you've got a man but He's got another plan
Only wants what you will do instead

Well, little girl twenty one you never thought that this would come
You starve yourself to play the part
But I can promise you there's a man whose love is true
And He'll treat you like the jewel you are

There could never be a more beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguises and hoops, they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you, more beautiful you

So turn around you're not too far
To back away be who you are
To change your path go another way
It's not too late, you can be saved
If you feel depressed with past regrets
The shameful nights hope to forget
Can disappear, they can all be washed away

By the one who's strong, can right your wrongs
Can rid your fears dry, all your tears
And change the way you look at this big world
He will take your dark distorted view
And with His light, He will show you truth
And again you'll see through the eyes of a little girl

That there could never be a more beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguises and hoops, they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you
There could never be a more beautiful you

Love that song Jen!

I made a digital layout with it a couple of years ago and framed it for my teenage niece because I think the message is so important. She has it hanging in her room!

Abercrombie used to sell sporting goods to the elite, and was the go to place for outfitting a safari. Sad to see what they've become.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

Is the Abercrombie of A&F related to the Abercrombie of Abercrombie & Kent? The safari connection would make sense.

History of Abercrombie & Fitch

I'm sure they're rolling in their graves.

It is funny you say that, because a couple years ago, I was having a moment of confusion when dd wanted to go into A&F was trying to figure out if it was the same store I had shopped at during my college days (1986-1990). The store was so different, I couldn't quite put 2 and 2 together. Yep, I had some really nice shorts (almost knee length!) and tops from A&F, when it was much more conservative.

I get a headache just walking BY the store -- I can't even imagine having to be INSIDE the store for eight hours straight...
Several years ago my daughter got hired to work there. They require their employees to wear only A&F, and only the current season. They only gave each employee a few hours a week, making it so they had to hire lots of kids to work there. Lots of kids required to buy the clothes. Ready made customers.

Apparently that was part of their marketing plan too.

Wow, I had no idea this company had this mentality. We will never shop there, even if we could afford to. They definitely have an asshat notion of what "cool" is.

I took my DD shopping there and we came home with two oversized bags. One bag featured a male's torso with abs, no face was shown. The other bag had the same model but showed his face and he was still shirtless. My cat literally and figuratively poked the eyes out of the face bag and left the torso bag alone. Something about that model just freaked him out.

I can't stand how dark A&F is and the smell in Hollister gives me headaches beacuse it smells like wet beach sand. Their stores are so dark I feel like I'm in a nightclub to buy clothes.

When I was a teenager, A&F used to be sporting outfitters, much like Orvis. Retail doesn't pay well enough for teens to be able to afford the A&F outfits it takes to work there. What a racket.

Does the 5, 7, 9 store still exist? I don't care that they don't carry larger sizes. It is how you present yourself.

Yes, they still exist. The clothes, though, are not something a teen girl would want to wear. It's more pre-hooker style now. And, they do not carry the tiny sizes that they used to in the 80's. The girls like Forever 21 and Body Central, but you have to watch those, too, for appropriateness. Our best bets have been boutiques, like Francesca's, and Bella Bella, and Frock Candy.

I knew there was a reason I didn't like A&F but I never connected the smell to the grumpiness that always followed going into that store.
