I was wondering if anyone else sets rules for themselves about scrap/craft time?! For example, before I decided to participate in the May Faux LOAD challenge I decided that before I could sit down and craft every day everyone in the house needed to be dressed for the day, fed, the kitchen and any other chores needed to be completed, laundry needed to be started and my bed needed to be made. Does anyone else have to do that so you don't consume all of your time in crafting?

My house has to be in order. And my scrap space tidy before I can begin a new project.

I wouldn't consider it a rule but I also have to have my house clean and bed made before I sit down in my craft room.

No. But I will say I do not have a family. It is just me and DBF, so if the laundry doesn't get done, no biggie.

If I am in the mood to scrap, I scrap. To hell with everything else.

Ah, yes, I have to have my household to do list done, or at least "in progress", and my scrap room has to be clean before I can even start. I'm definitely one of those, 'clean up from the last layout before starting another' camp.

It isn't a rule so much as one of those anal type things I have to have done otherwise I can't focus on my scrapping..because the nagging thoughts of what's not getting done keep interrupting my creative process.

That's how it is for me, too. I feel better and more relaxed in my scrap room if I know the rest of the house is in order.

Nope. But if DH is at home and it's the daytime he gets very uppity about me scrapping instead of doing housework! Sometimes I do the jobs, sometimes I just let him give me the evil eye and ignore him!

I used to need to have the whole house in order beforehand, but that seems to be why I'm 10 years behind w/my photos - my house is never completely in order, so I wasn't scrapping!

Now my 'rule' is to try to scrap every day, even if it's only for 15 minutes.

I am also another one who needs to have my space cleaned up between projects.

If I waited until everything was done, I'd never have scrap time I try to carve out some time each week to be crafty, I let the family know that I'm going to scrap and they have to manage by themselves. My hubby will distract and entertain the kids while I'm busy. He knows that it helps me to relax and then the whole family get to benefit from a happier Mom.

Not strict ones. I do make sure to schedule in time during the day to get things done, and in that time, there is a hierarchy. Chores come first, then any projects due immediately, and if those are taken care of, it's my choice on what to work on. Sometimes it's scrapping, sometimes it's not.

My kids are all grown and my husband travels alot so I scrap when I want when I get home from work...unless the grandkids "need" me!!! They come before anything!!! I would rather make the memories than scrap them!!!

Yes, I do have that unwritten rule in my head. I will sit down and watch tv or get online but when I want to block off some time to scrap - I absolutely can't have a messy house or something work related that needs doing. I think it's because I KNOW I will get involved in the process of creating and I will be consumed by it for hours. I can't just sit down for 15 minutes - I have to be in the mindset of being creative. I wish I could change that.

But then what happens right now is that when I have the whole house clean and the day is free - I wanna go out and have fun.

So that's why I don't scrap that much. It's really just procrastination which is a characteristic of many perfectionists, including myself.

What are you looking at?

Yes, I'm a rule setter and follower with pretty much all aspects of my life, so naturally that extends to scrapping. I have to have my whole home clean before scrapping. Part of it is that I just can't create in a mess, though.

I look right at my messy house and tell it, "You're not the boss of me."

I think we artists must create when the Muse visits (with a temperamental toss of my hair)--right after we clean up that
omg mess that the cat drug in, feed the hubs so he doesn't get
sullen or surly, wrap the in-law's anniversary gift, etc. Sigh....

I've been a dilettante, but I'm thinking of dabbling in something else.

I scrap (almost every day) when DD has her super nap, which is currently 3-4 hours so I have plenty of time. I do usually do chores for the first half hour, definitely no longer and then I feel I've earnt my scrapping time, lol!

Or I just scrap, the laundry can wait!

My only rule is that the baby isn't crying LOL
Then I scrap as fast as I can until she starts again. Or until I'm ready for bed. Whichever comes first.

Thank you all for you comments! I would love to have the freedom to say "I'll scrap whenever I want thank you very much!" I can't wait for those days to get here! But seeings how my youngest won't be in college for 18 years I'll have to work around the housework and the laundry!

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in the needing to have things done first camp though. Makes me feel a little less anal! lol

It's not a rule, but I can't relax and fully enjoy myself unless the house is clean. I can't relax and enjoy a meal either, before the house is clean.

all house chores must be finished first so i can craft without feeling pressed for time because i have things i need to do.

i craft when DH is not home or if he's busy doing something on his own.

i don't craft if i'm not in the mood. crafting is not life or death so i only do it while it's fun.

The only scrapping rule I have is to do it when ever I feel like it. I don't have any rules about the chores being done. most of the time I can't vacuum because I am scrapping. or that I am getting ready to scrap and I don't want to vacuum the living room twice. The kitchen is usually clean or tidy So I never worry about that. Dinner is always ready when its time. I scrap in the living room so my life is scrapping. and if I have an on going project then nothing else gets done.

Happy scrapping

That! It's one of my forms of stress relief, if I'm feeling super stressed out then telling myself I have to clean and do laundry before I can scrap is not going to help the situation!

My house has absolutely got to be clean AND the litter boxes emptied. Otherwise, I think about it while I'm scrapping and get distracted. That's about the only rule I have.

I need to have certain things done before I can scrap. My dh is at work all day working hard so I can stay home with the kids. I would feel bad if I shirked my at home duties so I could scrap.

No rules for me! If I feel like scrapbooking, I do. I roughly plan our dinner schedule which includes lots of easy dishes and leftovers it helps that I only have 1 child and he's in school so I have plenty of time to do what I like.

I don't have any rules that would prevent me from sitting down and craft. (Maybe I should; I certainly am not very good at remembering to do any chores...).

I guess since I am having a really tough time at work, and crafting keeps me sane and happy, I wouldn't want to hinder that outlet.

My husband and I are both retired from our full time jobs, however, I work part time 3 mornings a week. With just the two of us at home, our house doesn't get very messy.

So I just scrap when I feel like it.

Nope. But I don't have children so it's different than it is for some.
My mojo is not always there when I need it to be, so when it strikes I gotta scrap or I'll lose it. But I am one of those that needs to walk away from a layout multiple times so I get chores done in between. Like doing dishes while the mist droplets are drying, or doing laundry while trying to figure out title placement.
