My 16 year old dd has sent me to ask the peas . In California when you don't come to a complete stop at a stop sign it is called a California stop. Do you call it that in other states too?

A rolling stop.

I just don't see why people think I'm too patronizing (that means I treat them as if they were stupid.)

We call it a rolling stop. But we have Michigan turn arounds here and I always wonder why they are called that. Does anyone else have those?

I included a picture because I couldn't explain it, LOL

Rolling stop. If it is observed by LE, it will equal a ticket.

Here in PA we call it either a rolling stop or, yes, a California stop.

And yes, definitely ticket worthy. I almost did get a ticket for one, once. In my defense, it was a temporary stop sign and I forgot it was there. So by the time I remembered, I was going too quickly to stop fully and still make my left turn. Luckily the police officer was very understanding.

I grew up in CA so it's a California stop. And yes you can get ticketed. I got one once. But I had stopped behind the limit line then creeped out so it looked like I didn't stop. The view the officer had couldn't see my stop. I didn't fight it because I do it a lot soi just paid it.

Decoda0421- I haven't seen those turns except in Michigan. I have family there and they can be confusing!

Those are called "Michigan lefts"!

I love how the GPS will say, "make a slight left" - no, that isn't a slight left, it is a U-turn!

call it a rolling stop but was with someone who was pulled over for this, when the officer asked "Do you know why I stopped you", y friend replied yes" rolling stop", the officer said, " You can't be stopped and rolling at the same time" My friend got a citation for disregarding a stop sign. I don't think there are any states that have "rolling stop" as a traffic offense, aND disregarding a stop sign is a pretty hefty ticket in these parts!

I actually live on a corner that has 4 stops. If I were a cop, we would have one RICH city Unfortunately, not only do we have "rolling stoppers" but people who feel stopping (or even slowing down) is optional.

They are illegal here. You must come to a complete stop.

I got my first and only ticket doing one of those in our neighborhood. I was taking DS to school. Wish I had a good story for my ticket.

I had gone nearly 26 years without being pulled over.

In MS it was a California Stop.

Those MI Turns are similar to what Texans have around their interstates, called a Texas Turnaround.

I grew up in Massachusetts and my parents called it a Hollywood stop. I don't think my parents had ever even visited CA, so I'm not sure where they got this from. I've lived in CA for eight years now and haven't heard it called a California stop before.

Another question, when a basement has full size windows I have only heard or it referred to as a California basement. Anyone else know of it referred to it as that?
