I have to admit that I often don't have time to watch scrapbooking videos, and I love it when bloggers include a few step-by-step photos of their layout coming together in their blog posts (Amy Tan is awesome at this!).

I'm curious what everyone else prefers- photos or a video?

I like both But I rarely watch videos that are longer than 10 minutes, to be honest.

**sometimes I use fast forward when watching longer videos.. I am a bit impatient, I guess

I prefer videos as I am usually watching for the overall concept and not so much the step by step process per se.

I don't like amateur videos. If you can't amp up the professional communicator, I'm probably not going to watch your video.

Have a plan...know where you are going. Don't "hem n haw".
Don't make excuses.
Speak clearly and don't use a ton of abbreviations.

Don't waste my time. If you are doing a task that's repetitive, such as drawing pen stitches or cutting out an image, speed it up, don't make me watch you draw every single stitch.

There are some really quality video makers out there...learn from them.

My preference is videos, especially 20-30 minutes or longer. But I also love the step by step photos if there is text and commenting about the steps.

If it's a specific technique- videos for sure.
If it's just putting together a layout- pics are fine.

I prefer videos, but I like photos too.

And ditto to what Janna & SDeven said - if it's too long, I may fast forward. I appreciate it when the maker/creator speaks clearly and fasts forwards through a step that is repetitive or time-consuming. If not, I may just stop watching the video. With that said, I LOVE all the designer project videos here on 2peas.

ETA - I agree with NJBrown. Text and comments under the step by step photos are helpful.

A video, if done correctly. There is one I watched the other day that was done to music, no talking/explaining the steps, and it was sped up the whole time. NOT a fan of this style. I don't watch process videos to listen to music. I like the interaction of the person doing the video.

I also don't like it when there are disturbances in the background...animals, kids, phones...

I really prefer photos ! I don't like videos, even if they really improve my english...
They are harder to understand for me, they are longer(it's not easy to load because of internet : where I live, internet is not very good), I have to listen them with a headset because of nap's children... I only watch them beacause I don't want to miss informations that are not in the pdf !

Good question.

I like to turn on Shimelle's videos at the end of the day when I'm trying to relax. I play them because I'm looking for something that takes time.

There's just such a quiet joy she has in what she's doing that I find myself drawn in to watch.

At least at first, it wasn't my style at all..... she puts stuff together that I wouldn't..... and none of it matters because when she's done, it is exactly right for her. She's happy. It looks great. It's done and she move on to the next. I've learned her techniques because I've been drawn to her videos.

I will go to Youtube if I want to learn a particular technique. I might watch it with the sound muted if I'm not drawn in by the person, but it better be good or I turn it off.

Good photos well laid out to show step by step are fantastic.

While photos are better than nothing, I prefer videos. I also prefer to hear the process, not music. I usually don't like the music they choose.

I also don't like the "ummm, and now I'm gonna... oh cat, what are you doing in here, don't you know...blah, blah...now I'm going to choose, oh no, where did I put that?" If you are going to make a video, GET.It. Together. before you start. Have somewhat of a plan, I don't want to watch you spend 10 minutes looking for a photo.

And, all of this ^^ is why I don't make videos because people like ME would be watching

I usually prefer step by step photos, since it takes less time for me. However, if there is a difficult technique that is made more clear by seeing a video, then at those times, I prefer a video.

I'm with you, OP, I prefer step-by-step photos because I may not have time to watch a video (or I might be in a situation where I don't want to play the video through my laptop's speakers but I don't have headphones).

If I am trying to look up something specific I find scrolling through photos to find what I want easier than looking for the right spot in a video.

I like both videos and step by step photos but for different reasons.

I like to watch/listen to videos to get my mojo started or for background noise while I'm scrapping. Kind of like listening to PRT or other podcasts.

I tend to like step by step photos when I'm trying to recreate a look or technique because I can stay on each step and really study the picture until I'm ready to move on to the next step.

I totally agree!! Be prepared and get to the point. I was watching the most God-awful videos the other day. She was showing contents of a kit. It was a 25 minute video!! why would a video showing kit contents be that long, you ask? Because she talked for 3 minutes about something stupid, then she would yell at her dog every 2 minutes to stop being loud. Honestly, I couldnt even hear the dog. She was more distracting than the poor pup. And she had everything still in baggies and she couldnt open them and blah blah blah. All she had to do was open the kit BEFORE filming, check out the products and then present it to us. 3 minutes, 5 minutes TOPS. Annoying. I'll never watch her videos again.

And I have to say that MercyTiara is the only one who gets away with pet invasions. Maya is too cute, and Tracy handles it without breaking narration at all. It's not distracting in the slightest, because it's brief and she doesnt get distracted by it and lose her train of though.

Great question!

I don't watch many videos, but I am open to change.

I usually like step-by-step photos because I'm too impatient to sit through an entire video or try to fast-forward to the spot I need. Photos are often sufficient.

When it's a complicated technique or too difficult to explain with photos, I will watch a video. I have seen some really poorly edited videos in the past and it turned me off. Like others said, good editing is key.

I like videos. Step by step photos are okay if there are not too many. I can't take blog posts that go on and on and on. I can watch a 45 minute video, though, so go figure.

I love your videos, Melissa, and I check your blog regularly. So, whatever you're doing, I like it.

I make YT videos. I don't get many views. Lol. I love doing process videos, but I can't speak during them.

I just made a simple photo "process" video the other day, because when I did the video the first time, I spoke during the process, and I said a lot of "Um's" and lost words. I have Sporadic Hemiplegic Migraines, which cause lasting speech problems, as well as cognitive function problems. So, most of the time words refuse to come out, or I end up inserting random words into sentences, saying words incorrectly, and having slurred speech. I realize that people don't like the "um's", so I decided a simple photo video would be better.

My speech and cognitive issues are also a reason why I use music for my videos. I was personally offended when someone complained about people who use music on their videos. Honey, it's called a mute button. Some of us don't have the luxury of being eloquent when we speak. *shrug* Just my humble opinion.

I much prefer step-by-step photos. Actually, I love them! Videos are getting more and more common, which is alright, but I don't watch them. First of all, I read many times faster than I can watch something - I can swallow a long post in two or three minutes, but a video is almost guaranteed to be longer than that. Secondly, I always either listen to music or the ambient sounds of living (which I thoroughly enjoy), which I prefer not to have to switch off (and I don't always have headphones - I'm often on the go and you know how they're never in the right bag no matter how many sets you have).

In the same way, I don't watch much TV or many movies; only rarely do I look something up on youtube or click a video link. I've tried to watch some Glitter Girl and I'm glad it's out there - don't get me wrong - but it isn't for me. I've watched a few of Jennifer McGuire's videos back when I was learning to use my inktense pencils.

I prefer step by step photos with directions. If I'm looking up a tutorial, it's because I want to make it and with photos I can take my time with each step and make sure I get it right. I actually have some step by step tutorials on my blog with photos and directions with the hope of making them as clear and easy to follow as possible so anyone can recreate it.

I like both - Tim Holtz does both for his tags and if I want to go back to it the photos give me a quick reckoner, the video gives me the confidence to try it.

Wilna I was watching your paint spill video whilst I was on the phone to a friend, I got caught out big time cause when the spill happened I went what the and then rewound and laughed my head off, you handled it with such finesse and what a page it turned out. Wouldn't have got that in photos!!
